Great achievement by Mahindra to get whooping 176218 bookings in the first 60 mins. If all these bookings translate to delivery, I was wondering how much time it will take to fulfill the deliveries? As per Autocar Professional (Source:https://www.autocarpro.in/news/mm-ey...m-brand-122063), the monthly production capacity of Thar lifestyle SUV is 9500 and segregated among ROXX (6500) and 3-door Thar (3000). With this optimized capacity, the delivery of the first hour booking may take over 27 months! Are we ready to wait for over 2 years to get the Thar ROXX?

Yes, this difference will be there when we compare BOF SUVs vs plush crossovers. 9 out of 10 times, the family members would always prefer the comfort of a Sonet or Seltos over the Thar, despite the macho look & go-anywhere capability of a 4x4 system.

Hmm, not necessarily though. If you do not plan to do hardcore off-roading, then a 4x2 will suffice. Many Thars are mall crawlers anyway !

This here is a textbook definition of a deal-breaker. Unless you can employ the folding side-steps mentioned earlier in this thread, or some other jugaad, I would say do not go for the Roxx. I would suggest you go for a softroader (Creta/Hyryder/Taigun) or the Jimny if you really need a 4x4 that is not too tall.

The Grand Vitara AWD is only for the manual variant, right ?

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Better give M&M some time to iron out the inevitable bugs if one can wait.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

I went for the test drive of the Mahindra Thar Roxx (AX7 D MT), I really wanted to find out what the buzz is all about. Me and my school friends decided to spend our Sunday with the car, we all live in different parts of the city and we decided to meet at Mahindra. For reference, we all are driving enthusiasts and we love spending time behind the steering wheel. I drive a Skoda Rapid DSG, my friend Ali drives a Ford Fusion + diesel (it has done 2L kms and he has maintained it so well) and the other friend Ashish drives a Creta OG & 3XO. We took turns to drive the car and we all had almost the same opinion on the drive experience.

Likes:
  • Road presence, there’s nothing like the Thar, looks menacing on the road.
  • Interior quality is very good, looks modern and luxurious
  • Practicality over the 3 door thar
  • You can have all the features you want in a modern car
  • Mahindra has better touch points across India, you will find a Mahindra dealer even in small cities
  • Good glass area, the car doesn’t feel claustrophobic
  • Clutch and gearbox was easy to use, gone are the days of long throws of Scorpio
  • Electronic steering is city friendly
  • Turbo lag is well masked, the Mhawk offers great drivability

Dislikes:
  • If you are after 2WD variant & want a family car, just go for XUV700, it’s a far superior and more comfortable car. If you are looking for 4x4, then the Thar Roxx makes sense.
  • The ride is still choppy, you will feel the road, even small undulations unsettle the car or rather the Thar
  • I was driving at 80kmph over my regular commuting route & there’s a dip in a flyover, the rear went hell loose and my friend Ashish bumped his hand
  • High speed direction changes are best avoided, it lacks that confidence and has lot of body roll as expected from a tall car
  • I’m sure I would get motion sickness if I spend too much time in the rear seat
  • I don’t know why but somehow I felt that both the front & rear seats lack underthigh support.
  • There’s massive nose diving under hard braking
  • I understand it’s a ladder on frame truck so I can’t expect much in terms of driving dynamics.
  • Engine is tractable but it doesn’t offer that pushed into the seat feeling as the numbers suggest

After reading so much positive things about the Thar Roxx, we had slightly mixed feelings, I mean, it’s a wonderful car no doubt, but it still can’t be my primary car. I love taking long road trips and I would want my car to be comfortable, safe and be predictable in handling, I would not want to be constantly correcting the steering inputs to keep the car straight. I don’t know if it was the test drive car or Thar Roxx in general feels like a nervous handler. On the other hand, I would love to have a Thar in my garage as a 3rd or 4th car, not the only car, it has got that charm.

Not sure as mine starts with B-999XXXX and I got the payment confirmation message at 11:01:16 from my credit card.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Folks, some friendly advise for all those who are going for test drives.. Please do a basic tyre pressure check. I have tried 3 visits and all 3 times they had the tire pressures way way off and the ride was extremely bumpy. I pointed the same out to them several times. 3rd time i went to the shell petrol bunk and got the tire pressures adjusted to 31psi myself and the ride improved dramatically and the car did not bump around as much and the rear passengers did not complain after that.

So i feel for some of you complaining about the bumpy ride quality, do go into the cluster menu and see the tire pressure before you start your test drive.

Attached screenshot of what it was before i got it calibrated. This was for the 19" on the AX7L 4x4 AT

This is a very common scenario with car showrooms or authorised service centres. It has been observed across various brands.

When you get a new car delivered or have your car serviced, it is common to find the tyre pressure higher than the recommended levels.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

After having seen, test-driven and booked the Thar Roxx, here are my observations. I will start with what I currently drive and why the Thar Roxx holds my interest to give some context. I have mostly had sedans all through my driving lifetime of ~25 years, my current ride being an M340i. Outright performance, handling and precision have captivated me for long and even when sedans were steadily losing their charm and SUV’s gaining prominence. Our ever deteriorating road conditions and the fear of scraping the underneath of my sedan have made me and my family members nervous every time we are on such terrain and has brought to fore the subject of SUVs being better suited to our roads. For other times when the roads are good, I am in heaven as a driver because such is the performance of the sedan. Now, what has suddenly changed that drew me to the Thar? There have been many a destination that I want to explore in a carefree manner, but, haven’t been able to given the sedan’s limitations. Although some 3D Thars that have been tastefully modified has caught my attention previously for their looks, I stayed away from it due to it being just a 2 seater. The Roxx has evolved well from the 3D Thar, addressing not only the seating for additional occupants but also seemingly better engineered (I am referring to the technical overview by none other than Mr. Velusamy in M&M, lucky I could understand Tamil. For others who don’t follow the language, Tripaccino has explained well in their YouTube channel, if you haven’t watched it, please do).
I will now get on to my observations:

Likes:
1. The Jeep Wrangler form-factor and the functionality it provides particularly in Indian road conditions is attractive.
2. Coming from a low seated driving position in a sedan, the driver’s seat in the Thar Roxx is overwhelmingly incredible.
3. Driver’s view of the road ahead and the view provided by the large ORVM’s are both excellent. Who needs 360 degree view?
4. Despite lower fuel efficiency, I liked the petrol drivetrain better for its refinement and power. Whilst being spoilt by the magical ZF 8 speed transmission in my M340i, I enjoyed using the smooth Aisin 6 speed torque converter.
5. The electronic power steering is a breeze to use, if you would like women in your household to enjoy the Thar Roxx, steering will not be their concern at all.
6. The step ladder and the grab handles makes it easy to get into the SUV provided you are reasonably fit; for others, I agree it would be a challenge.
7. The NVH and the overall suspension tuning using the Watt’s linkage seems to work well.
8. AC is very effective and cools down the cabin quickly.
9. Solid metallic roof as opposed to the fibre / plastic ones in the 3D Thar.
10. Sheer road presence! It was perhaps my first time to view a fellow Fortuner road user at the same eye-level or perhaps even higher.
11. Even the lower variants are well specified and it is attractive to those that don’t really have a need for a 2nd or 3rd car but would still like to have the Thar Roxx for fun (without spending much).

Dislikes:
1. The front grill has 2 issues – the design and it being body coloured. For the former, I am sure a Jeep Wrangler type after-market front grill will enhance the look and for the latter, it being black coloured will bring some sick contrast in colours like the Tango Red, Everest White.
2. The wire mesh behind the front grill seems very nominal and could have been more robust and better made.
3. The quality of the interior plastics and finish is sub-standard. The bottle holders in lower and higher variants have unfinished sharp edges. Hope M&M has a hawk-eyed quality inspector who will catch and correct this in vehicles that will be delivered to customers.
4. Continuing on quality of plastics, the ORVM and rear tail light housing have a piece that can be removed to access the screws – these are visible and could have been smoother and of better finish.
5. In the MT variants, the plastic above the ABC pedals interfere with your shoe tip.
6. The short antenna on the LH front side is installed in a slanted position in many Thars and not perfectly vertical – perhaps a small issue that can be corrected easily.
7. The length of the rear doors could have been a tad longer to improve proportion. However, I know not what other complications related to vehicle length and resultant costing it would have brought forth.

Overall, unless there is any bad surprises in terms of quality / reliability, the Thar Roxx feels like a great SUV to own and enjoy. May we all have a splendid Dusshera with the Thar Roxx arriving home.

Something each service center does to project feel good factor about service. As high air pressure leads to less friction leading to marginal increase in FE than before you went for service making you feel service has a positive impact on your vehicle.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

In all our 12 years of ownership, we have always maintained tire pressure at 29–30 PSI in our Scorpio'09, and the ride was never harsh. Although the ROXX has 19-inch wheels, it features generous 60mm rubber, so I expect the same plush ride with this pressure.

My guess is this - the rear axle has to stay close to the front driver`s seat - classic Jeep form factor.

Now somehow you need to fit two more doors and then hide them from our eyes. Continuous lines from the front needs to be broken, so the kink over the rear door and sloping C pillar, finally the overall cabin should appear shorter.

That is what I can see from the side profile.

ROXX in any case is not an elongated Thar, I wonder if there are many common parts at all.

I made two bookings

  1. AX7L D AT 4X4 Nebula Blue with Mocha Interior -Booking process initiated the second booking started, completed payment within the first minute (really fast fingering it). However, unfortunately got payment failed error even after credit card was charged. Wrote to customer service to rectify, which they did by the end of the day - Assigned Booking ID B-10131XXX

  2. MX3 P AT Stealth Black (for a friend) - Started booking on a parallel device within seconds, made payment within the first 1.5 minutes and paymnet was successful - Assigned Booking ID B-10132XXX

My guess is the ID is a regional order. Also those who got payment failure errors seemed to be pushed - unfairly - to higher booking sequence numbers further back in the queue - even those who were one of the first to make payment.
