Team-BHP Support ![]() | 2025 Kia Carens Clavis Review 2025 Kia Carens Clavis ReviewKia Carens Clavis Pros Refreshed styling is more appealing than before A practical & sensible 3-row family car that's well-built. 3rd row seat is actually useable User-friendly interiors look really good and have quality parts Fast and refined 1.5L turbo-petrol mated to smooth 7-speed AT and 6-speed MT & iMT Economical 1.5L diesel offers good driveability. Available in MT & AT variants Impressive ride quality with neutral car-like road manners Impressive kit (ventilated 1st row seats, captain seats, boss mode, digital key, drive modes, fully digital instruments, 360-degree camera, panoramic sunroof, rear window sunshades, all windows up/down through smartkey, remote engine start, electronic parking brake with auto hold, air purifier, dashcam with dual camera, paddle shifters, Bose sound system & loads more) Safety package includes Level 2 ADAS, hill descent control, 6 airbags, ESP, all-wheel disc brakes, auto-hold etc. Kia Carens Clavis Cons 1.5L NA petrol available only with a 6-speed MT. Kia isn't offering the smooth CVT on the Carens Clavis (CVT is actually better than DCT in bumper-to-bumper traffic) 2nd row legroom is good, not great (Kia has obviously prioritised the 3rd-row seat too). Diesels 114 BHP & 250 Nm although adequate are the lowest in the segment Turbo-petrol revs to just ~5,500 rpm. It's a powerful motor with 158 BHP on tap, so we wish it went higher for driving pleasure Reliability of the 7-speed DCT is a concern. Dual-Clutch ATs have traditionally had patchy reliability in India Long brake pedal travel. We felt their stopping performance was just above average Competitors like the XUV700, Tata Safari, Hector Plus etc. offer way more spacious cabins A few misses (no full-size spare wheel, ventilated 2nd row seats like the Syros & Alcazar, wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay in the top variant, no dual tone colour options, etc.) Since the Kia Carens has already been reviewed by Team-BHP, this report will only focus on changes made to the 2025 Carens Clavis. To read the full official review, click here. ![]() Introduction![]() The Kia Carens was launched in 2022. It has been quite a successful product for the company and regularly sells more than 5,000 units per month. Kia claims that it has sold more than 2 lakh units of the car in the 3 years since its launch. To keep the MUV's popularity strong, Kia has given it some updates. To start with, it has a new name. It is now called the Carens Clavis. The name Clavis is derived from the Latin phrase Clavis Aurea, meaning Golden Key. While the platform and body of the vehicle are unchanged, the changes to the exterior make it look more premium. Kia says that it fits into the space between an SUV and an MUV. The interior, too, has been updated, and some more features have been added to increase the car's appeal. As expected from a Kia, the Carens Clavis is loaded with features. These include a 26.62-inch Dual Panoramic Display Panel, ADAS Level 2 with 20 autonomous features, 18 safety features, all-round disc brakes, electric parking brake with auto hold, a climate control system, air purifier, 2-spoke leatherette-wrapped steering wheel, paddle shifters, 64-colour ambient lighting, ventilated first-row seats, 4-way electrically adjustable driver seat, boss mode, 360-degree camera, dual pane panoramic sunroof, Bose sound system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless smartphone charging, dual camera dashcam, remote vehicle commands, digital key with NFC technology which allows you to unlock/lock the car by touching your smartphone against the door handle and more. Kia Carens Clavis Price & BrochureKia will reveal the price of the Carens Clavis on May 23, 2025. The Carens Clavis will be available with three engine options: a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol that produces 158 BHP and 253 Nm, available with either a 6-speed MT or 6-speed iMT or 7-speed dual-clutch AT, a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol that develops 113 BHP and 144 Nm with a 6-speed MT and a 1.5-litre diesel that puts out 114 BHP and 250 Nm, offered with a 6-speed MT or 6-speed AT. The car will come in HTE, HTE(O), HTK, HTK+, HTK+(O), HTX & HTX+ variants and 8 colours - Ivory Silver Gloss, Pewter Olive, Imperial Blue, Glacier White Pearl, Gravity Grey, Sparkling Silver, Aurora Black Pearl and Clear White. Team-BHP Support ![]() | The Carens Clavis is powered by the same 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that is found in multiple cars from the Kia and Hyundai stables. It produces an impressive 158 BHP (@ 5,500 rpm) and 253 Nm (@1,500-3,500 rpm). This 1.5L turbo-petrol engine is available with a 7-speed DCT automatic or a 6-speed MT or 6-speed iMT. Fire up the engine, and it's refined at idle, silently purring away. Hyundai-Kia powertrains have always set NVH benchmarks, and this car is no different. Shift to D or R, and it moves off the line smoothly. Without any throttle input, the car crawls forward. Crawling at city speeds isn’t very dramatic and the 1.5L is very well-behaved. With light to medium throttle inputs, you can go about your daily commute quite comfortably. The throttle response is smooth, and power delivery is linear. The 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is also seamless when moving through the gears. Start driving and you will appreciate the healthy low-end of this engine. Thanks to the turbocharger and direct injection, you’re never at a shortage of power. Just floor the accelerator if you want to close a gap in traffic or make that quick overtake. The engine and gearbox will do the rest. Get on some open roads and you can let the Carens Clavis stretch its legs. Put your right foot down and before you know it, you’ll hit triple-digit speeds. Outright acceleration is good, but not as urgent as some other 1.5-litre turbo-petrols that we have driven. The turbo delivers a strong mid-range punch that will take care of all the overtaking on the highway. You can cruise along the highway at 100 km/h while the engine spins at a relaxed ~1,900 rpm. Even at 120 km/h, the engine felt relaxed with the rev counter reading ~2,300 rpm. The Carens Clavis won't break a sweat cruising at these speeds all day long. The dual-clutch transmission moves through the gears seamlessly. The kickdown response time is quick enough and the gearbox doesn’t hesitate to drop down the gears to get the engine into the powerband. When you are in the mood for some fun, switch to Sport mode and start flipping the paddle shifters for manual control. The ECU matches the revs, which is always very satisfying. While the overall NVH package is good, the engine doesn't sound very sporty at high revs. Kia has restricted the maximum rpm to ~5,500, which is too low and well below the start of the redline. The paddle shifters are responsive, and you can extract some performance from the engine using them for quick overtakes or keeping the engine in the powerband. You can engage the gearbox manual mode by sliding the gear lever to the right (when in D), and this makes the gearbox hold on to the gears a bit longer. You can also take control of the gears using the paddle shifters and manually keep the engine in the power band. The Carens Clavis gets 3 drive modes - Eco, Normal and Sport. Eco Mode - Engage the Eco mode when you want to extract maximum fuel efficiency. The throttle response is dulled, but given the power on tap, the mode is quite comfortable to use in the city. In fact, we prefer driving in this mode in the city as the car becomes a lot smoother to drive. The Auto Start-Stop feature is activated automatically when you select the Eco mode. Also, while driving in the city in Eco mode, we noticed that the gearbox wasn't downshifting easily when the accelerator was pressed. It wanted to stay in the higher gears to extract more fuel efficiency. Normal Mode - This is the default mode and, just as the name suggests, it's normal to drive. There is a noticeable difference between Normal and Eco mode. This mode can be used for day-to-day driving, which has a mix of city and open roads. Sport Mode - Engage this mode when you want the car to be more responsive to your inputs. The throttle response is sharper, and the transmission also holds on to gears a bit longer in this mode. The steering is also noticeably heavier, although not as much as enthusiasts would like (more on this later). Sport mode isn't something you'd want to engage in the city as it can get a bit jerky to drive. Noise, Vibration & Harshness (NVH)The 1.5-litre unit is very refined overall. At city speeds, you can barely hear the engine in the cabin. However, rev the engine and it is quite audible. Rev hard (and you will do that because of the nature of this turbo-petrol), and the noise can get irritating for the occupants. There is no insulation under the bonnet, which might be contributing to this. Vibrations are well controlled and cruising with the family on the highway should be comfortable. Tyre noise does creep into the cabin at higher speeds, and there is a hint of wind noise at speeds above 100 km/h. Mileage & Fuel economyThe ARAI-certified fuel efficiency for the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol DCT is 16.66 km/l (15.95 km/l for the MT and iMT). Of course, the real-world FE numbers will be much lower, considering that turbo-petrol DCTs are very sensitive to the driving style. We’ll wait for some ownership reviews to get a better picture of real-world fuel efficiency. Fuel tank capacity remains the same at 45 litres, and the Carens Clavis is E20 compatible. Bonnet gets no insulation underneath: ![]() SuspensionMcPherson strut suspension at the front: ![]() Coupled torsion beam axle at the rear: ![]() Ride ComfortThe Carens Clavis sports a McPherson strut suspension at the front and a torsion beam setup at the rear. Start driving and you will immediately notice that the car rides in a comfortable manner. Low-speed ride quality is absorbent, and even large potholes are handled well. IMHO, the suspension tune is perfect for a 6/7 seater. It's neither too soft, nor too stiff. You will love how comfortable the Carens Clavis is, even on poor roads. Ride quality is impressive for the segment, arguably even for a segment above. HTK+ (O) and higher variants ride on 215/55 section tyres on 17-inch wheels and have recommended tyre pressure of 33 PSI and 31 PSI at the front and rear (34 PSI and 35 PSI - full load), respectively. Lower variants riding 16 and 15-inch wheels and taller rubber will offer a cushier ride. Handling & DynamicsOut on the highway, the Carens stays composed even at triple-digit speeds. Its road manners are neutral, just as you would expect from a 3-row family crossover. You can cruise at highway speeds quite comfortably. You only feel the softer suspension and additional length during quick lane changes. The rear swings around a little later after you turn the wheel. It's more about being able to know how hard you can chuck the car around when doing abrupt direction changes. Throw the Carens into a corner and it responds better than you'd expect from a 6/7-seater. Yes, there's body roll, but it's within acceptable limits. It's very car-like and less MPV-like, which means you can maintain a line across a corner without lifting off. Also, it's good to know that the Carens has electronic stability control across all variants to help in emergency situations. SteeringThe Carens Clavis gets a well-tuned EPS. It is one-finger light & smooth in the city. As the speedometer climbs, the EPS feels reasonably direct and fast too. The good all-round visibility, smooth gearboxes (automatics in particular) and light controls make this car easy to drive in urban conditions. On the highway, the steering feels stable and has no nervousness. However, we would have liked a bit more feedback from the steering. BrakingKia has made all-wheel disc brakes standard across all variants. Additionally, you also get brake assist and ABS. However, we found the braking in the Carens Clavis to be weaker than expected. The pedal travels for quite a distance before the brakes bite, and while the stopping power is adequate for regular driving, we felt it could have been stronger to inspire confidence while braking from high speeds. Niggles & ProblemsWhile most of the feedback about this 1.5-litre turbo-petrol has been positive, the turbo-petrol engine with the dual-clutch transmission is something you should be careful with. Like all Kia cars, the Carens Clavis comes with a standard warranty of 3 years/unlimited km (extendable up to 5 years) and 3 years RSA. It’s very much advisable to go for the maximum extended warranty. Don’t even think about it twice. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Disclaimer: Kia invited Team-BHP for the Carens Clavis test drive. They covered all the travel expenses for this driving event. Last edited by Aditya : 16th May 2025 at 15:08. |

| Re: 2025 Kia Carens Clavis Review Thanks for the review! I got a chance to take a colleague's Carens on a short 250KM trip with family (4 adults and an infant), and it has been a memorable one for all of us. The composure, bump absorption and most importantly the S P A C E was amazing (coming from a Grand i10). I've driven my FIL's Triber extensively, and I became a fan of MPV's flexibility. But Carens took my 'fan'ship to next level. This facelift looks classier, and I just want to get one on my way home from work! PS: The 1.5L NA petrol Carens that I drove has returned a sweeeet overall mileage of 18KMPL on a 10% city and 90% highway drive! Last edited by Mr.Bentley : 16th May 2025 at 14:19. |

I like the front end and alloys of Carens over Clavis. Offering manual gearbox with Clavis is really appreciated. A few years ago I was looking for Seltos manual variant, but the dealership advised that only iMT is being offered and Kia has stopped the production of MT variants. Did Kia provide the manual variants for test drive? In your opinion, will it be any different from the manual variant of Verna/Creta. I assume that the engine-gearbox combination is the same and no changes are made to the gearbox for the added weight. | |

| Re: 2025 Kia Carens Clavis Review I (+ 3 family members) travelled with hired Kia Carens recently from Delhi airport to Jim Corbett. In my earlier trips, i always rented Innova Crysta. This time the quoted price for Crysta was outrageous so booked Carens and what a wonderful experience it was for: - Inside space is better than Crysta - Luggage space is better than Crysta - Low NVH than Crysta (Crysta has a very high lugging vibration) - Less tiring journey, Saved 50% cost, smooth drive - Mileage shown in MID was 23KMPL from Delhi to Corbett (280Kms approx.) Carens is indeed an underdog car. The power never felt inadequate. Its a great option for people who don't want to own Crysta for any reason. Last edited by UD17 : 16th May 2025 at 15:57. |

| Re: 2025 Kia Carens Clavis Review Kia Carens Clavis fuel efficiency figures revealed Kia is all set to launch the Carens Clavis in India next week. It will be available with three engine options, and the company has now revealed their ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figures. ![]() The Carens Clavis will be offered with a familiar set of engines. These include 1.5-litre petrol, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine produces 113 BHP and 144 Nm and comes paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Its ARAI-claimed mileage is 15.34 km/l. The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol unit produces 158 BHP and 253 Nm. It will be available with a 6-speed manual, 6-speed iMT and 7-speed DCT. | Re: 2025 Kia Carens Clavis Review Love the new styling for this car, had postponed my purchase and waited for it to launch. Panoramic sunroof is a plus looking at long term ownership I want to have with this car. Already booked HTX IMT variant as I think it has everything I need. Maruti Invicto was a strong contender but I don't like the interiors and the way Innova/Invicto have positioned their automatic lever way in the front, gives too much wagon vibes. Hopefully I can bring this one home soon ![]() |

| Re: 2025 Kia Carens Clavis Review Thank you for the review, I've thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Can you please help me understand, why this con is mentioned for Clavis but not for other turbo petrol cars? Does it feel like under powered at any rev band? Even 2.0 tsi is limited to rev till 6k rpm, XUV700 petrol revs till 5k rpm only. |
