Re: Chevrolet Beat : Test Drive & Review

I do not know whether anyone had encountered this in this forum before. The battery in my car is gone, it was an exide battery, I bought the vehicle in July 2010 and till now it has covered only 8.5K kms. I do not believe how this battery is dead so soon. I had used amaron before in my santro which had served me for 5 years without any issues. Is it the problem of exide batteriy's quality? The vehicle went for 2nd service just 1 month back, and issues straight after this. I enquired with the service center and they told there are no issues in any wiring too. I am not with the vehicle now to check whether that is my original battery. I was very disappointed after hearing that the battery is dead. Has anyone changed your battery so soon? Went for new amaron battery which costed Rs.5800 while this poor product Exide estimated a price of Rs.8600.

Ins't there a 3 year warranty that we get with exide? I remember getting a warranty card

You should probably check the battery number, seems fishy for me.

Yes I also had the same doubt that you are having. I called up the exide service people direcly and they told the OE batteries come with 1 year warranty only. I also had a warranty card, but the problem is I am not with the vehicle now and my wife was already upset when the car stalled in the middle of the road, so she was in no mood to check and she also does not know how to check it. So I didnt have any other option but ask her to change a new one. I too definitely doubt that battery would have been changed or something wrong somewhere has definitely happened. Do we need to check all these things once its back from service from now on? but what all do we have to check it if at all we start to check, there are so many things to check, so will be cautious from next time on after servicing. There can be nothing done other than this from my part.

Agree that 1.5 years for an OEM battery is not great. This can happen if
-the battery feels abused by too much of starts and short distance rides,
-battery was put under extra load by adding after market fitments,
-frequent draining of battery without an opportunity to recharge by either overnight loading due to absent mindedness or misuse of power in the service center,
-your battery has been replaced with a faulty one
-some issue with recharging,
-some issue in the wiring,
-an issue with the battery itself.

Nope, i have no idea about why the increase in FE. Surprisingly the tyre pressure was also lower than the normal that i have always kept.

Re: Chevrolet Beat : Test Drive & Review

@informah, There is definitely some battery leakage happening in your car. My beat was purchased in Apr 2010 and has done over 11k and the battery is as good as new. Haven't heard any complaints about exide so far. If you have added any electrical accessories like stereo or lights check the wiring. Get your car checked at an auto electrical workshop instead of the service centre.

That is a very expensive oil and a very expensive service. It is on par with a diesel car service ! My BEAT's third service is coming soon and I am already dreading the bill...

Do not worry mate. The regular engine oil + oil filter change @ 15k kms will set you back by around INR 1k-1.2k and alongwith the service/labor charges and miscellaneous fluid top-ups, your bill will mostly hover around the INR 2k mark.

Wow ! My Cedia regular service doesnt cross 2-2.5k. Does GM force you to use Synthetic oil ? If you were using Mineral oil (~300/l), you would straight away shave off ~2k from your bill.

By default Beat comes with Synthetic oil as OEM.

Rs 5348/- is the entire service charge incurred in 18 months of ownership. Now I have to shell out 1200 to 1500 every six months.

Now, this month i tested the beat "FE" a little.,thinking that i am a very light footed driver which is why maybe the mileage figure i am getting must be high. So this time around, i had the AC on for about 40-50% of my drives instead of the usual 5-10% and drove in the range of 80-100 Km/hr ( Mostly at around 85-90) and the change in FE was shocking.

Kms driven: 640.8
Total Fuel consumed: 31.1 Liters at 70.xx Rs/Ltr

Fuel Efficiency: 20.60 Kmpl

Note:
1.Most of the driving is done on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on weekends.
2.This time on the other hand, some of the driving was also done in the city with the AC.
3. Never ever in any of the gears did i cross 3000 RPM, it was mostly maintained at around 2400-2800 RPM.
4. Previously the FE i used the get was around 19 Kmpl so an increase of about 1.5 Kmpl ( How do you justify that?)
Same thing I too observed. Due to medical emergency I drove my car at speeds between 100-130 kmph and covered 254 km distance in about 2 hrs & 50 min. and the fuel consumed was 13.13 l only, FE around ~ 19 kmpl. The journey was done between Udaipur-Ahmedabad on NH 8 in the morning (5.00 am - 8.00 am). I too don't have any explanation for this.

Do you mean to say the FE had increased or decreased driving at those speeds? I thought I remember you getting FE of 20+ some time back, or is it my bad memory?

I guess you had done your above early morning drive with 0% A/C. Could you please let us know.

Coming to my latest FE figures. I got seriously frustrated with the lack of pull and was driving with lot of over-revving, mostly in city. Even then, she couldn't provide me the pick-up or the power I was expecting from a 1l or 800 cc car. Even if I floored the accelerator, she took her own sweet time to get to speeds. I felt like stepping on a banana while walking. She returned her lowest ever - 9.1 kmpl

Indeed I get FE of 20+ when I drive sedately at speed < 80 kmph, all gear shifts done at < 2000 rpm. So at speeds most of the time above 100 kmph and upto 130 kmph, all gear shifts done at > 3000 rpm I was expecting FE not more than 17 kmpl. FE of 19.34 is surprising for me.

The drive was without AC, 3 people on board, windows rolled up and tyre pressure 32 psi.

The OEM engine oil for Beat is Total - Quartz 7000 GMO, 5W30 Synthetic Oil. It is a Genuine Engine Oil specially made for Chevrolet Beat by Elf-Total. It costs ~ Rs. 1200 for 3.7 l. Ask the Service Advisor which engine oil did they put in your car.

Why is this difference in cost for engine oil? Though my engine oil is nowhere near dark, I am thinking of asking for an oil change for my 6-month service next month.

Have anyone noted one thing - in idle, when I try press the accelerator in neutral, as lightly and slowly as I can, the engine do not rev more untill I press more and more. And then the RPM jumps away uncontrollably (sudden increase to 1.5k+) after a point of pressure on the pedal. I could never rev it to a 1k constantly! Why is this delay and then a sudden surge? Won't this be also happening while I am driving in gear? A delay and a sudden surge to higher RPM than what we expect?
