My Fiat Linea T Jet (2014)'s alternator conked off for the second time!
The car is 5 years old now and completed 68000kms recently.
The alternator first failed at about 52000kms, somewhere in April-May 2018. The car was still under warranty (extended warranty) and the alternator and the belt were replaced under warranty.
Now, after approximately another 16000kms and about 19-20 months, the alternator has failed again.
I was told the tensioner also needs replacement.

Is this really expected for a T Jet?

Rather than the inconvenience caused, from the car breaking down in the middle of nowhere while on a 550kms trip, what I find unacceptable are two alternators failing within a span of 19-20 months and approx 16000kms!

Unfortunately the car completed 5 years and the extended warranty also got over by the end of September. The alternator for T Jet costs a bomb!

Has anyone else experienced repeated alternator on their T Jet?
What could be the reason for alternator failing?

No, this is not expected or normal for a T Jet.

Is the car bone stock? Any electrical accessories?

Any battery upgrades done? Or is the battery same AH as OEM?

Have seen cases of alternator failures when battery was upgraded to a higher AH.

Which dealership carried out the work for first alternator change? Are we sure that it was a replacement and not repair?

No accessories or modifications of any sort. It is bone stock.

No battery upgrades done, except for replacing the battery at the end of its life. Original was Exide. Replaced with exactly same Exide last December.

Done at RamKay Fiat, Chennai. The alternator was replaced, to the best of my knowledge.

The alternator + tensioner is coming to INR24000/- (₹22000 + ₹2000 respectively).

The extended warranty for over 2 months and 20 days back. And the part warranty, I was told, is only for 6 months or 10000kms.

Is it just bad luck, I am wondering.

Sorry to see your alternator problems. Its very unlikely to fail in such short intervals. Please claim it under Goodwill warranty as Fiat is known to accept such claims. If not, at least you get good discounts on parts with such claims. Please try that. Good luck.

You are not the first person to tell me this. My Abarth's alternator conked off too (it's same as Tjet) just last month. After much deliberation on repair vs replacement, I approached my local FASS and they said they would give partial goodwill warranty.

I then asked fellow Abarth owners to get theirs checked and couple of them got the replacement done under warranty (their car's still had warranty left).

My suggestion would be to open up and see what is damaged. There are alternator repair specialists in most cities and you can try approaching them. But I didn't have a good experience with one in Mumbai. He charged me 5k for repair and it didn't work.

That is what the Hyson Jeep (MOPAR) service at Kottayam did. Repaired the alternator at a cost of ₹6431/- and the tensioner (₹2454) and belt stretcher (₹2417) were changed. An unrelated question:

It is time to change two of the tyres. The car is running on Michelin Primacy PS3 205/55R16 now. I was forced to change two of the tyres which came factory fitted (Goodyear NCT) when two of them burst after going through a pothole on a road. (You can read about it here : https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-...ml#post3758149). It happened when the car had completed about 13500kms. The ODO is 69300kms today. So the two Michelins have completed about 56000kms by now. The treads are almost worn out.

I am planning to get the new Michelin Primacy PS4 205/55R16 tyres, each costing about ₹9000/-

The question is, Are there any better alternatives? Any equally good option at lower price?

Is it advisable to buy the tyres online? If so, from where? The Michelin dealer (Jeeva tyres) in Pondicherry has been telling me they will order the tyre 'next month' for 2 months now. They still don't have stock. Michelin Primacy PS4 205/55R16 is available on Amazon. Is it a good idea to order it on Amazon (delivery in 48 hours)?

I had driven my Linea T-jet to Kotagiri earlier this week. On one particlear steep incline with U-turn, I had to stop the car fully because another car which was going downhill did not have the patience to stop his car until I completed the U-turn. I was with three adults and a kid with boot fully loaded. I could not continue the 50 deg climb with my wheel still negotiating the U-turn and the torgue was not just sufficient to continue the climb. There was a 5 vehicle build up behind me and I could not reverse either. So I had to increase the acceleration and did a mistake of engaging clutch with increased rpm.

There was a smoke smell inside cabin and I instantly knew I have burnt the clutch. But the smoke smell went off after 3~4 mins and did not recur. The car continued to climb more steeper portions later without issue as long as I maintain the momentum in the first gear. We are now back to Bangalore without any further untoward incident. I had just changed a new clutch kit for the Tjet about 1500 kms earlier. I am not sure how bad is the damage to clutch. As of now, I dont see any issue in the shift nor the clutch has become hard. It behaves the same way. The stock clutch lasted for 80K kms. I am hoping I would have lost just maybe 10% of the life from the clutch due to my mistake. Will get it checked when I send for service next month.

I have been in the same boat. On the way to Ooty when my Fiesta was just a month old, on a steep incline, I burnt my clutch, I got the same regret filled heart. But since then, around 4 and a half years and 31k KMs later, the car is just running fine on the samr stock clutch. It may have reduced the life of the clutch, but not by a noticeable margin. So, worry not my friend, get it checked the next time your car goes for a service but don't mind it.

My T Jet is on the 3rd alternator in 54k Km. Original concked off at 23k, second at 45k, got it overhauled at Pai Auto Santacruz for Rs 4k and it lasted another 8k Km.

It concked off last month and had a brand new one fitted at Vroome Pointe 2 months back for Rs 24k ( including tensioner, new belt etc)

Don't know the reason, my car is bone stock

I'm on Goodyear Assurance Triplemax 2's for my T Jet (205/55 R 16).

Have had a fantastic experience, as good as the previous Michelins. All parameters, grip, road noise, tread pattern, steering response are evenly matched.

Even the warranty is excellent. Ruptured a tyre within 800 km, hit a pothole at 75kmph. Goodyear replaced it, no questions asked.

Icing on the cake, they cost Rs 6600 vs Rs 9000 for 4ST's

This is curious. My understanding is that alternator is not supposed to fail like this. I am wondering whether T Jets are having issues with he alternator. Not sure whether this is an issue with some batches of cars / alternators. When did you buy the car? Unfortunately, the ASS in Noida - Sahil Automobiles, has closed down and the next nearest ASS is 40 km away in Moti Nagar. It would be great if you could recommend some reliable FNG in Noida or Ghaziabad. WoS is one option but of late some fellow Bhpians did not have good experience with it.

You can go to Landmark in Okhla Phase I. No need to go to Moti Nagar.
