re: Review: 1st-gen Mahindra Thar (2011 - 2019)

Foul smell in the cabin, presumed from exhaust. however closed the flap and its worsened. checked around cabin floor and plugged drain holes with tape (there were many open ones). however the smell is of unburnt fuel and am not able to locate the channel
a) should there be an unburnt fuel smell at all emanating from engine area? b) if so, the entry to cabin would be from levers or steering column.

did anyone face such issue. the dealer says, foul smell is high and unusual but cannot figure out and await mahindra response

Mine doesn't. Check if by any chance the carpets were soaked in diesel on account of a spill?

@ vnambiar

Did you fill up the tank to the brim? If yes, then fuel might be spilling through the key hole in the cap (when you take turns). A common problem in 5XX series and Major. I presume its the same in Thar as well.

A local solution to the problem is to use the old Maruti 800's engine oil cap. Its a direct fit. I have it in my jeep, will take a picture and upload.

Did avoid filling full tank, the smell emanates from air duct/steering columns or panels connecting to engine - could not figure out though. Maruti idea sounds good, cap is rather tight

It's from engine, perhaps EMS malfunction?, checked the exhaust lines from fuel tank to front axle, no leakage spotted. Need to figure out the exhaust line to engine.

re: Review: 1st-gen Mahindra Thar (2011 - 2019)

I plan to change the HT dueller tyres on my thar to AT ones. BF Goodrich A/T preferably. I ve done around 800 kms on my odo and the best exchange rate I 've got is 6k per tyre and 6.5k for the spare one.
But this dealer is charging me 8750 for the BFG 235/70/R16 A/T.
Effectively I might have to pay around 13k for the set of 5.

Most dealers say that these tyres are no more imported and not available. I am a bit confused. Does anyone have more information on this? If anyone who has put A/T tyres on the thar and can comment on its performance. help.

Hi Nitin,
Why BF Goodrich? Any particular reason?
I have Yokohama Geolander AT-S 235/ 70/ R 15 on my 540 and it performs well on highway(less noise) and was good OTR too.

Hey. Can you try and close the heater vents and then see if the foul smell is still present in the cabin.
Alternatively if the Thar is equipped with a Catcon try and check if there are no leakages from that.

the exhaust at the rear is the culprit as the smoke from it gets sucked into the cabin from the rear, when the flap is open.

i have first hand experience while travelling in a classic from noida to dehradun.

Well no particular reason. From what I've read and the little I've observed both have their pros and cons. Just that I personally like the looks of the BFG. BTW I went ahead and changed them this weekend. Some pics in my thread. http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/4x4-ve...me-last-3.html

Seems to be reasonably priced. Now if they have an option of AC + HT also, it would take the cake.
