But when u have the pedal to the metal and that nicely weighed steering giving u all the confidence u need all is forgotten. I can't do that in a Verna at all it's like a boat at high speeds (even at 100 kmph)

The service cost of Hyundai is a bit on the expensive side. My 2009 I20 crdi had to be serviced twice a year. Don't know why but the newer ones need servicing every 10K or once a year whichever is earlier. Hyundai says since yours is an old model get it serviced twice a year. Still don't get it. The only difference is mine is a 5-speed transmission and the newer ones are 6-speed. Each service costs about 7K.

I own a rapid and the only thing that I dislike is the steering. Well-weighted but zero feedback. Same with my Jetta also. Guess its a VW thing. They need to poach some engineers from Ford :).

I just returned from a 530 km return trip on Ahmedabad - Bharuch strech. FE shown on tripmeter was 22.1 kmpl. Actual tankful to tankful worked out to be 21 kmpl - cheaper than riding an auto ;).
Upgrading to 195/60 Yokos have weighted up the steering nicely. Managed to overtake a couple of vernas doing 120 by just flicking rt foot without downshifting. Awesome.

Any idea if the attractive interest rates on the Vento/ Polo is still offered by VW Finance?

Gentlemen, need your help/advice quickly.

1)My brother-in-law who lives in Mumbai has given his Vento TDI for its first service. the car has run approx 12,500 kms. The service center (VW Downtown, Mumbai) has quoted 12,000 for the service. I find it a lil on the higher side. (I paid abt 7000 for my vento tdi in blr) Is there any other service center in south/central Mumbai?

2)The SA has given him an AMC plan quoting 22,500 for 2 services (inlcuding this one). AFAIK the amc should include free brake pads for the 2nd/30,000 kms service. Am i right? (When i asked the SA abt the same he said it doesnt include free break pads.)

3)The amc only includes 2 services, 2 check-ups, engine oil n filter change, pollen filter change and wheel align n balancing. Does it make economical sense to go for it?

Would appreciate a quick response.
Thanks in advance

How to enable the *beep* sound during lock/unlock of the car? I have seen it many Vento where they have used Horn as the normal beep sound when they lock/unlock the car.

I believe the service centre can do it for you. And this has to be done using the VCDS I believe.

They may do it for free or charge you a nominal price for it. Call them up and find out before you proceed. Btw, do you think it is actually required? I mean it sounds a bit unusual with the horn beeping.

Thanks Gannu. I will check with them.

Yes i can live without it but all these years I have been used to Autocop's *beep* central locking sound.

Apart from the statutory Oil, Filter(s) change, what else was done on your car during its first service? As per the service schedule, there are certain things that are condition based. Most of the time a quotation always takes into account worst case where everything needs to be done unless you specifically say that you don't want it done come what may. Once a year, 12K, I'd say that's pretty darn good considering you don't have the car for a few hours only in 12 month period.

Thanks for your early response, NevGin.
The service is yet to be done. we are considering whether to go for the AMC or not and then get it serviced.
Looking at the filters and misc parts they are offering to change under AMC, i feel it doesnt make sense to go for it unless the brake pads are included under the amc (which i am not too sure abt, hence the doubt).
I am not worried abt the time factor taken for the service. its the cost that i am finding a tad on the higher side.

I agree with you. To me the AMC never made sense. Never had it on my Polo TDI, nor do I have it on my Vento TDI. Happy to just have things done after a nice long chat with the service who are very happy to advise more if one probes. In my experience I have found VW Downtown workshop service advisers to be quite up-to-date with their knowledge and information.

Sounds about right. It varies between 8-12K depending on the amount of oil required to be added, any specific parts replaced etc. My first two services were around 10K each (mine is a petrol, however)

Brake pads are changed as required. I had mine changed at the second service, but there are others who have run them longer, if I'm not mistaken. In any case it is wear-n-tear related and won't be covered under your regular AMC.

Find out what the *exclusions* are. From your list it seems that most major components are covered (air filter change is one thing that's missing). Wheel alignment/balancing you are better served doing it at a professional tyrewala. In any case why do you want to pay upfront for service? What if you have a bad experience and want to switch to another ASS next year? Don't get locked in, is my advice.

Well, the problem is the Vento's lock/unlock is the horn, some ham-handed attempt at cost-cutting, I guess. I used to pull in late from work on occasion and feel a really guilty pang go through me as I locked the car in my building parking. It's just annoying. In fact had it disabled (the exact opposite of what you are planning) during my first service. :D

FYI : Got the below in my email. I did not get the OTR/Ex-Showroom figures in the mail.

Not quite true,

Please refer to the EURO Energy portal site

For the same Engine capacity, the Diesel engine (TDi)is much cleaner than its petrol sibling (TSi)

Please note, both TSI and TDI utilize most current VW engine designs (New Gen engines coming this 2014)

You've misunderstood my post newtonMeter. If all you look at is CO2 per kilometer driven (as per the link you posted), then diesel will come out on top. My point is, that is not the complete story. Diesel has a higher energy/carbon density than gasoline or gas or any other automotive fuel. And that gives it its fuel efficiency and therefore lower emissions on a per km basis. However, when you burn a gallon of diesel and a gallon of petrol, diesel releases more CO2 per unit of the fuel burnt i.e. liter/gallon.

I don't quite understand your last comment about VW tech. But if it has to do with my post then my point is every car company in India, including VW, removes emissions tech from their diesel engines to meet our fuel quality and lax standards. The same is not true for petrol. If you look at the progression from Euro 4 to 5 to 6, the norms for petrol tighten marginally but there is a huge change for diesel. The jump from Euro 4 to 5 requires a change from diesel fuel quality (ultra-low sulfur) to emissions tech such as particulate filters. I don't see that happening till diesel is priced at market rates and till we have one standard for the entire country (non metros aren't even Euro 4, they are at Euro 3). If it is introduced in the same manner then a Euro 5 diesel car will not be able to drive out of the cities.

What you say is true as long as the FE of petrol and diesel cars is same, but the FE of diesels is much more than that of petrol cars, hence the pollution load per km is lower for diesels.

Further the diesel cars emit less Nox and Co2. With filters in the exhaust system the particulate matter also is less. So on the whole diesel cars with their better FE pollute less than petrol cars.
