Sorry if this is not the correct thread. But, would like to know more about 'Selling a car'. Dos and Donts. Forms to fill up and such. Is there any thread on this? My search skills could not find any.

The most common mistake made by all folks is to sign all the Transfer forms without filling in the details. I would suggest you fill in the name, address of the buyer along with the date of purchase when you hand over the papers.
Cheers

Superb article, ajmat.

And you're right about the C180. One of the rare Mercedes resale lemons.

Well written article Ajmat....
Another pointer would also be the number of the car.
Fancy number fetch more money
Numbers that total up to 8, have poorer resale value.

I did manage to sell my cars at a profit..
Choosing your buyers are important too... sell the car to a person who is totally convinced about your car.and not glued to the market...

I sold my 2.5 yr old Scorpio recently and got a very good deal on it. When I went to the finance company to close my loan they told me that they are very happy funding vehicles with better resale value. The better the resale, the higher funding you get from the finance companies. It turns out that most of these cars loans never have closure problem as the sale would (in most cases) take care of the outstanding loan amount though the book value would have come down heavily.

Hmm... Ajmat alerady touched upon another corollary to that theory i.e. perception of maintenance cost. Indica (long term reliability+ makes you think of more visits to TASS), and the Tavera (high spares costs + apparent lower reliability in comp to Qualis) take big hits on this count

Those things are losing value pretty fast these days. Moreover there are no vehicles regd with the total 8.

Numerology 101.

Hey E_L, let elf uncle show you how to add up numbers to end up with a single digit:
  1. Take a vehicle number, say MH-02-L-1861.
  2. Now take the last digits in the plate, i.e. 1861.
  3. If you add 1+8+6+1 you get a total of 16.
  4. 16 becomes 1+6 = 7.
  5. Hence, your total vehicle number is 7.
The above example is the simplistic form most people use.

If you wish to use the English letter numeric values for the Chaldean Method, it gets a little more complicated

Here are the English letter numeric values - Chaldean Method.
A= 1
B= 2
C= 3
D= 4
E= 5
F= 22
G= 3
H= 5
I= 1
J= 1
K= 2
L= 3
M= 4
N= 5
O= 7
P= 8
Q= 1
R= 2
S= 3
T= 4
U= 6
V= 6
W= 6
X= 5
Y= 1
Z= 7

Hence. going by the above example of the number plate, i.e. MH-02-L-1861, it would become:
M= 4
H= 5
0= 0
2= 2
L= 3
1= 1
8= 8
6= 6
1= 1
Total: 30 or 3+0 = 3.

Well, lets not jump to conclusions. The presence of a fancy number does have some intrigue in the second market. A friend of mine who bought a second hand Zen recently gladly acknowledged that he didnt mind paying a lill extra considering the fancy number on the car.

Hey sweet uncle elf, thanks for the ton of info that you researched on my behalf, if only i could repay you. But you will be delighted to know that i had a fairly good idea of how it is done except for giving numbers to alphabets part. That is why i said the Govt has stopped (at least in TN) issuing numbers like 5003 or 7181 which BTW are the numbers from my brother's & dad's scooters (Before this ban was effected), since we refused to oblige the RTO.

Goddit, dammit ! LOL it.

Price Guides?

Are there any guide books to used car values?
In the UK, there are many public guides like Parkers, What Car etc... and the trade use 'Glass' guide. Most magazines also publish expected resale value after 3yrs. I don't see any of the Indian magazines publishing figures. Where can I get more info?

Thanks

I find the comments of Mithun on ladies and doctors quite objectionable. I think moderators should take note of it. It's highly sexist attitude. I don't want to waste words to explain why I think so. I am sure most would agree with me.
Mithun you are free to have your opinion on any subject under the sun and even express them in private. But when you express them in a public forum like this, please remember both you and the owners of this forum can be taken to court and made to pay for making such silly comments. Please don't put the owners of this wonderful forum in legal trouble by making such frivolous and childish comments.
