This tannic acid combines with the Iron Oxide to form a more stable compound called Iron Tannate, which is typically black in color compared to the reddish color of rust. Many commercial rust converters will include both a polymer to act as a protective layer, and an additional acidic compound designed to accelerate the chemical processes related to the tannic acids. One such acid, known as Phosphoric acid may also work as a rust converter itself, by reacting with the Iron oxide and converting it to black ferric phosphate."

This for our understanding.
Well Manish, you have seen it yourself.

It was, well a Total Waste of time, energy, labour and money. Nevertheless will not try it once again.

Getting to the topic. First round of Funding arrived and work on the floor boards started yesterday. Though the basic foundation seems to be good, and rusting on the floor is not too much, we are still going ahead with Complete Floor replacement.

Does not seems it needs the Chassis off the body type of work as the Basic structure is Fine.

Metal sheets got, measured and sized up to whats required.

Tomorrow its going to the pressing guy's.

Re: 1966 1600 TS VW Fastback Restoration

The floor pans arrived.

Work will resume and most probably one side must be completed within a week.

Re: 1966 1600 TS VW Fastback Restoration

The work on the floor is almost complete.

Sometimes the saying goes true ""aankhon ka Dhoka"" or maybe "" Haathi ke daanth.. Dikhaane ke kuch and khaane ke liye kuch aur""

The rusting is deep and too much of metal replacement than what was expected, Hopefully this work might go on for another 3 weeks before the tinker finishes his part of work.

There are traces of SUN-ROOF existence on this very car... I am investigating that and will reveal the details very very soon...

Sir,

I am not going to open the roof as it is intact But i can see traces of existence of a Sun-Roof on the car ORIGINALLY, Looks like that has been welded and closed off. Will not venture into that if not necessary.

The metal replacement work will go on for another week as there is lot of things that needs correction on the body shell.

Another week will be needed for Body-Tapping and this is a precision job as this job will make or break the body surface.

If not done well- may have to use too much of Body-filler and putty

If done well - The useage of Body-filler and putty will be limited which in turn is always better.

The third week for conducting a Dry-fit of all parts, check them for correction, correct if necessary, to look for any imperfections and do any welding if necessary before the car is handed over to the painter.

Re: 1966 1600 TS VW Fastback Restoration

I must say you are doing a wonderful restoration, i admire each and every step of yours, keeping things the way they were originally, no wonder once complete, car will last for decades.
I really like the way you got the floor pan pressed to original pattern. Also the various patches are also replaced very neatly.
Nazron ka dhoka is a part of these restorations and i hope it won't lasts long.

Re: 1966 1600 TS VW Fastback Restoration

Latest Update.

Floor work completed.

The LHS of the car is completely tinkered with.

LHS panels will get the body tapping done by weekend.

Work on RHS will resume once things get streamlined.

Re: 1966 1600 TS VW Fastback Restoration

Well... Some respite for the car

I will be restoring the car Mechanically and transporting it back to Mumbai for it to get its cosmetic restoration. But before that there were few pending work that needed to be completed by the tinker's. Should be done in a couple of days.

I quite forgot about this forgettable thread

Kasli, i think we have been texting and talking to each other in the past 2 weeks, so why this update

Anyways, as per discussed, all the panels are fitted, the car is waiting for the mechanic, he's presently busy with tooo many VW's. I plan to cart it to him in the coming week, and hopefully to Kasli (Mumbai) by first week of july.

Will keep updating you and this unusual Restoration thread.
