1966 1600 TS VW Fastback Restoration

One more VW

One more Happy New Year

One more friend (well, he's a well known good friend of mine)

One more restoration to start off the new year.

One more gruelling and exciting few months.

Lord knows the nexus between me and Fastbacks... This would be my SECOND Fastback restoration, and there is a THIRD(MINE) that will be discussed in a subsequent thread and there is a FOURTH ( again my friends, waiting for restoration)

I need to thank my good friend Rudresh who helped me a lot in getting this car, he did lot of the donkeys job in sending the car over here for restoration and helped my friend get hold of this very original beauty.

Basically this Fastback is in good nick, apart from rusting (which infact is more that what i thought it was.

Now few things about the said car.

Make : Volkswagen
Model : Type 3 Fastback
Year : 1966
Engine : 1600cc Twin Carb

Well, the restoration started with the dawn of the new year, Pics will follow from now on.

I Guess I will be the First one to Comment on this Thread. First Of all A Very Nice Car and Kudos to Pavan for helping Save one more VW and Taking it under his wings for another Excellent Restoration all would love to Witnesss in the coming days.

Thank you for the reply Shreeram

Over the week full of discussion over the documents/ spares and other related stuff, we got hold of some decent used tyres for the car and we found a transporter to get the car over here for restoration.

No Shreeram, this car was picked up from Hubli of all the odd places ( Legend has it, Hubli, Dharwad and its adjoining cities had many VW's and there are still a lot of them HIDDEN somewhere)

Luckily the car came into Bangalore safely, its now time to check what amount of work it needs..

Seems like a nice car on the outside, but with loads of work to be done.

Awaiting for one more fastback to be ready.

Yes Anna, Hubli / Dharward / Belgaum had & Have loads of VW. I had one standing just behind my home in Belgaum up to 2000 when i moved to Bangalore. Don't know what happened of it.

I remember a VW bus near my home in CAMP, Which was not being used from 1994. Let me check with my source, if the Bus is still there. It was used by the owner of Ciema Bulbs and tubes company.

All the best for this beauty, to be frank i am a fan of fastback thanks to you. and would love to own one along with a Fiat 500.

Are you planning on keeping the Twin Carburettors or converting to a single carb? I have not yet seen any running Twin Carb aircooled VWs in India.

Yes Santaji, i shall be keeping the ORIGINAL Twin Carb units on the cars final set-up

We have got hold of the carb re-build kits with the help of Bullet_Boy (Pankaj of Jalopy shop-Bangalore fame)

You shall see 3 fastbacks running on twin carbs in the due course of time, dont worry

WORK ON HOLD guys.. So no updates will be available untill next week.

The workshop is getting shifted to a bigger place and this week i shall take a break from Restorations and concentrate FULL TIME on my regular job for a change

Anyways, that does not stop me from doing my usual stuff. Researched a bit about this particular car and through its chassis number found out this particular car is a "1966 1600 TS VW FASTBACK"

Certain things were infact specific only to this particular model

1) Has a TS Badge on either side of Fenders
2) The rear badge says VW 1600 TS
3) Twin port, + Twin carb 1600 cc engine
4) Does not have an Ash-tray on the dash, but on either of door pads
5) Comes with the Beetle kind of steering wheel
6) NO reverse / Back-up light
7) No High-back seats
8) Clear lens indicator lenses with orange back
9) Chrome inside rear view mirror (contd even in the 67 TL)
10) Comes with single color Fabric/ Vinyl seat covers

Most importantly

11) Has Ivory switch knobs which is present only to this ONE YEAR model.

Most of the changes are cosmetical only, but surprisingly and interestingly a 65hp 1600cc Twin-carb engine.

Getting back to topic.

The car was moved to the new shop ( A bigger one) rented out by my existing team. Its the same team which has the ability to finish projects based on any time frame given

PARTS SUPPLIER - Mr Pankaj from JALOPY SHOP. also will chip in with some technical advice.

So off we get towards scraping the car to get to bare metal.

Yes Sagar, Corrosion is always hidden at unknown areas

Initially it looked real good while making the purchase, but one has to understand these types of cars are uncared for in a long time and corrosion is under its skin.

No issues, have seen worse cars than this and my team is good enough to restore this fellow too.

All the glasses, and other fittings are removed and scraping of the car has started.

Work continues and the existing paint /Putty / Paste is so thick, we are burning it down.

50% of scraping is done on few panels as on today, while we were at it, i made a few observations.

1) the Original shade of the car, which we presumed to be White turned out to be GERMAN RED

2) Earlier someone had used too much of their brains and altered the front door window sill, need to get rid of that unwanted Patti on both the doors

3) The original place where the ORVM sits have been welded and closed, some jugaad is done below to fit some local ORVM, That needs to be restored now.

The wait was a bit long on this cars update.

We were waiting for a special Anti-rust treatment that was supposed to reach us from Mumbai. Well that arrived and off started the scraping process.

The Anti-Rust liquid came from Mumbai a couple of days ago, But to apply this the surface has to be CLEAN BARE METAL.

Somehow did not understand the way it works when we do the body tapping and start applying Polyster Putty (3M Bondo)

We sprayed, did not give a good coat, we applied it with Brush, still did not give a proper coat.

Our Member Kasli has been using this solution on his cars, would request him to throw some light on the same
