re: 1962 Fiat 1100 Super Select - Ownership Log

SS has been doing great in Chennai. It was also a part of the Pondy drive meet where it was comfortably doing 100 at absolute ease. Some pictures from the drive

So after the pondy drive, it was time for a service and so left it at Murugan.

I already had the oils and Murugan had the oil filter ready. I asked him to change the engine oil, oil filter, gearbox oil and crown oil.

Also asked him to bleed the brakes and adjust them.

Followed it up with washing and greasing at a place near my office. The greasing was not perfect as I still get few squeaks and have to check it again.

Once works were completed, it was driving great. After the oil change, the gears felt smoother than before and the car was riding brilliantly. But all of a sudden, the brakes started jamming the next day.

I suspected the FL wheel cylinder to be the culprit and so given the car back to Murugan. I had the wheel cylinder in Coimbatore and arranged for the same to be shipped to me. It has arrived in Chennai and I'm yet to hand it over to Murugan.

But I have asked him to remove and check all the 4 wheels for the brake system's condition.

WOW! You do seem to cherish your Fiat 1100 Super Select . Specially liked the choice of engine oil. Shell Helix!

BTW: How much should a master cylinder cost? Seems the Delight might be requiring one.

PS: I} How much did the oils and fluids cost?

II} When are you replacing the Padmini indicators, on the fenders? The correct ones should resemble those of a Fiat UNO.

Cheers!

Wheel cylinder was around 450-500 each when I got it few months back for the Lucas TVS.

Hx5 - Rs. 934
Spirax 140 - Rs. 227
Spirax 90 - Rs. 228 x 2

Regarding the indicators, I have been searching but yet to find one :(

You may put Fiat UNO ones. They look quite similiar to the original and in my opinion, quite convincing!

Agree fintail. I'm gonna keep her untouched until I plan and start the body works

The brakes are fine now. Have been driving it to work for the last two days. Maybe few more days of driving followed by a minor adjustment will be good. There is a mild pull to left which I will have to adjust after few more days of usage.

SS continues to rock. Here's the video where the SS features with few more classic FIAT's. This was shot for the upcoming movie Pannayarum Padminiyum.

One more highway drive for the SS and it enjoyed the drive, and so did we. Both SS and D ventured from Chennai to Bangalore in March 2014 for the FCB meet and we all had a gala time.

Some pictures:

Breakfast stop at Murugan Idly Kadai, some 30kms after Kancheepuram on the NH.

re: 1962 Fiat 1100 Super Select - Ownership Log

After returning from Bangalore, SS has primarily been quite with some occasional drives. It spent some time with couple of my friends and then took it to Murugan's garage for some works.

Silencer leak - Fixed. Replaced the middle doom. But car has now lost its beautify exhaust note and sounds subtle.
Brake issues - Replaced the brake master cylinder and got the brakes cleaned.
Oil leak from oil filter element - Fixed.
Replaced one faulty spark plug. Murugan mentioned that plugs were of different types and other plugs were stuck hard.
Carb cleaned.

Took delivery and all the above were resolved except for the carb. After cleaning and tuning the carb, it wasn't just right and car was struggling. It started to choke when accelerated suddenly.

I just parked the for a while since I was busy and also had to find another mechanic to resolve this issue.

So after more than a month lying idle, left the car with the mechanic of bhp'ian Dussey. Tons of thanks to him for refering me to his mech. Needless to say about the mech since most of you would be aware of Dussey and his collection.

The battery was completely down. Even charging was of no use as it was pretty weak after the Bangalore drive. So replaced with a new Amaron DIN 44 and met the mech on Sep 20. Few minutes of observing and he listed the possible issues of timing, carb tuning, change of plugs and ignition coil. Left the car there and returned back.

Tuesday evening the car was ready and got a call and I picked it up yesterday. He did a wonderful job and SS is back to glory and infact drives better than ever.

Spark plugs x 4
Ignition coil
Carb cleaned and tuned
Distributor cleaned with new new points and condensor
Timing corrected
New clamps for the battery tray and new terminals for the battery.

SS now drives brilliantly. There's a minor rattle from the silencer occasionally which needs attention post which car should be mechanically perfect. And BTW, completed 5000 kms of ownership as well

Dear h14 - hello. Please get the intake and exhaust valve clearances adjusted. It is necessary to use the original muffler to part number PAB12453 or the S1 muffler (I don't remember the part number). Please ensure that the intake manifold breather pipe orifice is clear, if the orifice is clogged or worn, you will not get power.

Please use my recommendations mentioned in the "Premier Padmini Technical Information" thread, specifications are provided there. If you do everything as mentioned, then the car will work properly. .

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar
