I am a little confused after seeing the pictures and reading through the posts.
Thanks Kevin

The Red is not the Final Finish coat, by wednesday we will have the FINAL SURFACER sprayed on, after which the ONLY job left would be 3 coats of final paint. I shall post the pictures once the surfacer is sprayed.

Basic mechanicals will be worked on here with me, only the Bolt-On Engine will be done elsewhere. Nothing to get confused, i really wished to finish 100% restoration on this Beetle, after having done so much, but you really cant do much.

Great to see your efforts and dedication towards the restoration of such a priceless machine yielding fruitful results.

I am amazed at the level of details you have mentioned with complementing photographs.

Have always been a mute reader of all your restorations so far and loved the VW Micro Bus one the best. Somehow, that one came up really well in Yellow and I personally liked that too.

Hope to see rest of the details in coming weeks

I never get tired of VW's you know

The Bus truly took too much of my time, but its now running nice.

Coming back to the project, 3rd week into the work that has gone in. The painter has made sure this Bug is Rust-proofed Inside out. Each nook and corner is properly sealed, every panel is properly tapped out and treated.

We are treating it with the FINAL Surfacer ( GLASURIT - Germany ) in a days time, after which the basic mechanicals will be done and the car should be sent out to the respective owner for further work.

YET.. The only grouse i will have is "Not having got the chance to Complete the BUG after doing all the major of Donkey's work"

re: Monster 1969 VW Beetle Restoration - EDIT : Delivered

Almost at the fag end of body shell restoration. Complete shell is now

1) Rust-proof
2) Body-tapping done
3) Metal replacement done
4) Shut-lines checked and set
5) Body-lines checked and set
6) Door/ decklid / bonnet setting complete
7) Mechanical components opened out, cleaned and painted
8) Few mechanical components replaced (tie-rod ends/suspension dampers/ axle joints/steering damper etc)
9) All locks and handles fitted and working fine.

I am thoroughly happy with the painter with the budget and the time

He said 3 - 4 weeks and an approx., budget of Rs.55k and he has been Bang On with both, the Budget exceeded a wee bit more by 2k, but the quality of work done is top notch

I just wish this bug would have been finished by him.. sadly, i can just wish all the best for this bug at its new place, The new painter must actually take it over from here and not goof up.

The bodyline has come out really impressive, smooth and even & so are the panel gaps, as you mentioned. I think apart from final spray and fittings( including interior) everything else has been taken care of. Great work Pavan ji.

The paint is from DUPONT and the quality being DUPONT SUPER. As the name says it, Its Super Expensive at around 13k for a complete final paint kit

1) 1.5 ltrs Covering coat - WHITE
2) 2.5 ltrs Final coat - YUKON YELLOW.

Hoping to finish off with the painting by weekend. The car has reached GT TUNER's (Mohnish - T-BHP)

The D-day arrived, Yet again BUNKED office for the Nth time this month, and off i go to GT Tuners where the car is parked.

1) Wet-sanded the car over once again

2) Checked all the spots and re-worked on the putty job

3) Dried the car, cleaned up and loaded it into the paint booth.

4) Sprayed Dupont Base White, allowed it to dry

5) Wet-sanded the white again to get that smooth surface

6) De-greased the car

7) Sprayed 3 coats of DUPONT - YUKON YELLOW (Same shade as my VW Beetle)

8) Switched ON the afterburners for baking the paint, and returned home by bidding good night to the Dirty fellow inside.

One full day at GT Tuners and exhausted, but Job done, no complaints

Pavan, is this the final coat?

I could see the paint coats as it was sprayed on the bonnet. Guess you have one more coat, right?

Pls share your experience with Glasurit surfacer.
Is it easier to use? Any other differences (positive or negative) that you or the painter observed?

Sir, Pardon me. The pics are from my mobile phone camera, and they dont do justice to the actual surface.

Please wait up for sometime before i put some better resolution pics.

Pankaj, the Glasurit surfacer is actually Wonderful, It binds very well and masks off any minor scratches or surface dinges. BUT if you are painting lighter shades like Yellow / White / Red this surfacer is a pain as it has Green Tint, So you have to do a White Base to get the covering and the Depth right. Same as i did with this car.

The color's looking eye-catching, i will reserve my comments till i see some pics clicked under natural light although paint has indeed come out smooth & even.
