Waking up a 1972 Citroen 2CV - Delivered

This car belongs to our T-BHP member Mr Sheriff, who owns some amazingly ORIGINAL wonderful classics. I purchased a 1967 VW Fastback from him last year and thats how i actually met him, and that is when he wanted some help with this car of his. Basically this car has been in slumber for over a decade and never moved an inch from where it was parked. The car was missing its Original Steering wheel which made it a hopeless situation to do anything, also the fact that an original steering was almost unavailable and impossible to procure.

Time passed and one final day he found the Original Steering, and that was the day we decided its time to get this car rolling on the roads

All these years of resting, the brakes were Jammed and impossible to move the car out, my mechanic tried something on the rear brakes and could move it a bit, but the front was Impossible as the brake drums are situated exactly at the gearbox. add to it the tires were shot.

It took an hour to get the tires inflated, and the car was jack rolled out of the basement parking of an apartment. Finally the car saw sunlight after a decade long slumber.

More updates to follow as work completes, And the plan is to roll it out in a weeks time.

Nice! Really neat. I owned a 2CV in the late seventies. They're great little cars!

Nice to see it being restored to its former glory! Keep up the good work.

Right now we are working on getting the instrument cluster fitted, its dismantled and in shambles.

The 1100 Panel Van...! U have to wait for some more time for that, Its just resting right now, and not a hurried project.

re: Waking up a 1972 Citroen 2CV - Delivered

Very surprisingly, after the car has come out of its Deep sleep, ageing has been horrendous

Lot many places the sheet metal is just dis-integrating, But most of the work done and completed today, just waiting for the weather to clear up so that we can finish the fender painting and few touch-ups here and there.

re: Waking up a 1972 Citroen 2CV - Delivered

Paint work Done, most of the small touch-ups here and there completed, rusted floor panels repaired. It was time for the electrician to work, cleaned up the wiring loom, removed some extra wiring, restored the IRVM, replaced new headlight bulbs, indicator bulbs, brake bulbs all replaced.

Just when i thought all the work is done, it dawned to the mechanic, that the Alternator is infact giving out mains, but its not charging the battery Luckily only the commutator is gone and brushes are being replaced.

Another day to wait, also the upholsterer has an hours work to finish too. Monday morning i am sure to deliver the car back to Mr Sheriff.

Re: Waking up a 1972 Citroen 2CV - Delivered

Recent updates, Mr Sheriff decided to take the car on a long drive, and how long a drive it was for the Citroen..! Bangalore to Coimbatore 365 kms

Happy to hear from him, the car did very well, barring 2 punctures on those decade old tires. Some photos from his camera taken enroute

Re: Waking up a 1972 Citroen 2CV - Delivered

Fantastic vehicle, just make sure the engine isn't 'pinking' or detonating under load. The timing of the ignition is vital to the engine's longevity, since it is almost always going flat out. Also make sure the oil cooler is clean, to keep the engine cool. Engines will last over 200,000km before coming apart for valve regrinds or bore rehones - they are simple and fairly easy to work on. They don't ever seem to wear out if you service them correctly - engine oil every 5000km, gear oil every 12000km, spark plugs every 5000km.

They can average 18km to a litre of petrol on a longer journey if you don't exceed 90-100kph. No electronics to cause problems, no head gasket, no cambelt, no radiator, no water pump, hoses, distributor, no fanbelt - so little to cause nasty repairs. The aluminium flat twin engine only outputs 30hp yet will pull the vehicle over any mountain pass with its inimitable smooth noise, which sounds unlike anything else. Cars made in the 50s and 60s only had 12 or 18hp, yet they still cruised happily all day at 80-100kph.

The comfort is superb - a relatively long wheelbase, low centre of mass, interconnected front to rear suspension, wide track and excellent damping mean it is more surefooted than many 'modern' machines. Allied to a very smooth engine which is flexible and torquey, a roll-back roof and panels which come off in 5-10 minutes, there is little else more practical even today.

I own more than one of these and have a lot of experience of old Citroens, any technical questions gladly answered. One day I hope to drive mine around India.
