Vatsa Vintage Resurrection - Rajdoot GTS 175 aka Bobby

Hello

Here I am starting my own thread for the restoration of one of the 3 Bobby Bikes that I have. I am sure the pics and literature that I have will be of use and interest to all Bobby Fans in here on T-Bhp and am sure there are a lot of those here.

This thread will allow me to share all the stuff that I have done till now and give details to all those who want it and will allow me to learn from other experienced fellow Bhpians here.

I have already received some generous help from Anup Mathur, Amruth, Girish PV to name a few on the path to restoring this bike. I am deeply indebted to the support from all.

So here it goes...

Thank you.

Re: Vatsa Vintage Resurrection - Rajdoot GTS 175 aka Bobby

And here are some pics of the post sand blasting etch priming and epoxy primer coating of the bare metal parts.

I used CAPCI etch / wash primer and followed that with a coat of CAPCI epoxy primer. The adhesion is very good.

Now am working on the metal repair wherever required because sand blasting reveals hairline metal fatigue parts etc which would not have been visible normally.

Here it is..

Re: Vatsa Vintage Resurrection - Rajdoot GTS 175 aka Bobby

All the non painted parts have been dismantled, fixed / repaired and then sent as required for :

1. Chrome Plating

or

2. Cadmium Plating

or

3. Powder Coating

or

Buffing & Polishing

And here are some pics of the same. The parts are looking as good, if not better, than new.

All Bearings have been sourced as per the Bearing Guide that I found on the internet too.

Enjoy.

Re: Vatsa Vintage Resurrection - Rajdoot GTS 175 aka Bobby

And I got some interesting options from England for Tail lights which are used on hot-rods.

Have also got the muffler for the silencer (the part that goes on the exhaust pipe tip fabricated and Cadmium Plated - Thanks to Anup Mathur for the part & Tutu Dhawan for fabricating it.

While I was collecting parts Tushar Bhatia allowed me to raid his treasure trove of parts and also gave me an overhauled spare engine! Thank you Tushar. He also gave me Rajdoot 175 Parts Catalogue.

Amruth (Twinn) helped me with the GTS Parts Catalogue and Anup with the Owner's Manual.

THanks for all the help team.

Here goes..

Woh la, here we are a separate thread for the restoration. You are giving me complexions over my build. Looks like no stone is unturned for this restoration.

Please can you share the bearing guide and owners manual if you have a soft copy. Even my parts are pending due from the buffing person. will be collecting it today and assembly should start from this weekend.

..and my hunt for body parts led me to this guy who got me a set of brand new hand beaten front and rear mudguards in raw metal form. I will try them on the bike once it is ready and get them chrome plated. Will be nice.

Re: Vatsa Vintage Resurrection - Rajdoot GTS 175 aka Bobby

Twinn the Bearing Guide is attached.

The OM is minute and massive work in detail and in progress. Anup has given it to me the condition that it should NOT be damaged and the original staples for original bike receipt dated 1974 should not be damaged.

I am not getting photocopied from the bazaar but seeking help from a professional agency to do a high res scan and then reproduce it as is. Its going to be time consuming and I guess a little expensive. Wait till the first copy is ready. Once I am satisfied I will then explore how many people want it and try and reproduce it for all of the Bobby lovers in one shot to amortize the cost. Will print in properly. Since Anup has given me a challenge as usual I will try and go a step beyond!

Cheers!.

Can you tell me what are the numbers point to in the guide. I'm kind of confused, because there are no heading labels in the guide.

Re: Vatsa Vintage Resurrection - Rajdoot GTS 175 aka Bobby

Twinn

Its simple. The first column gives you the bearing location. Second column is the OEM part number (no use for you at the moment). Third Column is the Bearing Number - you can use these numbers to get the bearing for the individual bearing locations. The 4th column I the bearing size. The last column tells you for each bearing location what is the quantity of bearings required.

Thanks

Re: Vatsa Vintage Resurrection - Rajdoot GTS 175 aka Bobby

Further update.
The Shock Absorbers were dismantled and have been completely rebuilt including new seals and oil as well as they were de-rusted, painted and all required parts chrome or cadmium plated and then reassembled. New rubber bushes where installed as well. Its really heartening to now compare them with how they were on the bike originally.

The air filter has been restored as well and the clamp duly chromed.

The fuel tank side plates have been chrome plated and their insides painted in silver finish to avoid rust build up on the insides over a period of time.

Work on the frame has been started and the fractured foot rest rod has been surgically removed and will be refitted tomorrow hopefully.

More to come.

Dear Sourabh,

I am so pleased to see your methodical restoration, where in you clean and coat every single nut bolt. This is mind blowing stuff. You sure have got a good team working for you.

Saurabh - I need some help for my restoration

1) Can you tell me what is the approx height of the rear shocks? I am unable to source a similar shocks, do you have any idea if the similar setup was seen in any other bikes?
2) Can you help me source the front drum plate for my GTS?

Re: Vatsa Vintage Resurrection - Rajdoot GTS 175 aka Bobby

Here is the latest update on the Bobby!

After a lot of time spent on my Beetle the work on the Bobby has once again started and the parts are now in painting.

Have decided to do a Red Candy Paint on the bike. Its a PPG formulation.
The base coat is a bright silver with a metallic Red as the top coat with a high build clear coat on top to seal it all. So what happens is that the bright silver is visible under the Red Metallic giving it a lovely sheen.

Here are some pics of the developments.

Cheers!

Hi saurabh,
The painter seems to have done a marvellous job on your bobby.
I too live in delhi and have a bobby that I want to restore for some time now. Would it be possible for you to give me contact details for the painter and a spare parts guy in Delhi?
