Seems like the American version has 2 round headlignts as opposed to one big rectangle. Anybody know the reason for the difference ??

Old US federal regulations demanding sealed beam headlights and not halogens - changed now

Uptil 1984 even the european merc 123s had two round lights as the american models but in 1984, the non american ones became one big rectangle with a smaller one in the same assembly. The american versions could still be identified as having two round sealed beams, extended bumpers and fro 1986, qall american cars or cars to be sold in America, had to have a rear mounted stop lamp, that is either on the boot or in trhe rear wind screen, seperate from the two tail mounted brake lights.

Just a little something I had to share with u team mates, come this thursday, i might be a lucky owner of a LHD American version 300 Turbo Diesel 123, if all goes right. Pray for me guys!!

Ajmat & V-16 nailed it.

The one peice assembly looks SO much better than the sealed beams.

Are you sure about that date V16? The Euro version had sealed beams up until 1984 ??

The euro assembly takes a H4 for the main beam and a H3 for the fog lights, that throw a really focussed horizontal beam a spanning almost 170* in front of the car.
The bulbs of the taillights can be replaced with with no tools. The true beauty of these cars lies in the engineering, and the tiny little details like these.

I guess i should have also mentioned, the deisels go forever!

Yup buddy, the Rectangular integrated one piece headlight was introduced in 1984 for sure but in American markets it was on till 1986 i think Even the 116s and te early 126 of USA had two round sealed beams.

Dont you feel the older Mercedes' were to distinctively Mercedes? The new ones...well, half of them dont even look German!

Their tag-line said it all "Mercedes Benz - Engineered like no other car in the world"....they would be hard-pressed to use it today.

Are SL560s rare here? Does any team member own an SL roadster? Do they ever come on sale? I remember seeing a red one on Hill Road in Bandra once. Sanas in Pune has a SL500, red as well. I think the roadsters of 79-86 period were the most good looking ones. Sigh!

Very true. A long time ago, I had a pen friend whose father was the PR director in MB (lost touch with him later though) and the baby Merc(190 series) was undergoing prototype testing. They had kept the internal reference name (you can say nick name) as "USHIDO". In those days, the car seemed very Japanese to them and hence the name.

Sanas's car is a SL 300. If it shows 500 then its a rebadging if ur talking about the newer gen.

the car was owned by a parsee before and now by the collector so you know why it is well maintained. both the sedan and the coupe have their own charm so elegance in their own right. i personally like the coupe better.
