Thanx!
I think I've seen around 2 dozen mk2's and only one of those was a TD so that makes them a comparatively rare here. You'll be reaching on time with change in your pocket. Please post some pictures!
I can't PM you since yours is not yet activated so why not call up the number to the Olx link I posted.
Auto start has a lot of watercooled VW parts and the rest could be found with Subhasis, I hear an mk2 golf donor is coming soon to his workshop to be broken. You'll probably get a lot of parts off of that one if needed.

Re: Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf

Congrats on your golf!

I think you need to worry about the mechanical parts alone, for there won't be much sensors and stuff. That's one big thing in case of a German.

This is the first time I came to know of a Golf in India, then I went through all the thread (links) to know that you are not the first one to own a Golf in India.

GTI is my first love and will remain so forever. Love that car to the bits. Amazing machine. Proud, that's my first car too

Wishing you many happy miles on your Golf!

Cheers!

Re: Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf

Hey D

Enjoyed the thread, so far.

TMJ has covered more ground in the last few months than it did in the last few years.

What's the odometer reading like?

Would like to see Subhasis' work in progress on the car.

I would have gone nuts if there were more than 1 project car happening, to manage 3-4 at the same time is some serious amount of time invested in the German machines

Hi Automaton! I'd first like to thank you for all the help and advice with these cars, especially on the E30 front, and thanx for getting me this lovely gear knob!!

Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf-img_20150226_150034.jpg

Smokey has been around quite a bit recently and I'm sure you'd be delighted to hear that she's quit smoking since you met her That was alot of carbon deposits and bad rings.
No idea about the odometer reading as it's driven far more than a single meter could display. The engine showed physicals signs of having been opened multiple times and needed a bit more work because of that.

Will update the pictures soon. right now the doors are being swapped and the body is being addressed. I plan to start the E30 or Jetta project a few weeks after the golf is back. Have got something special planned for the E30.

Re: Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf

Well I have been seeing your posts on various forums, or is it fora?, in India and abroad, and I'm waiting with bated breath on the next step for the E30, especially given the direction in which your questions are going .

All the best with that.

PS: I'm on another parts hunt, so mail me your list of critical stuff, will send you some options.

Re: Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf

The END of the BEGINNING

"I don't think you'll make it to Pune"

Many people have asked to keep this posted with pictures, so I'm going to keep this updated whenever I get anything new.
Today I got a set of pictures from Subhasis and he informed me about a slight delay, but why rush it, the car deserves to be done right this time.
They've begun the panel swapping and the red panels are on their way onto the white car.
Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf-img20150227wa0033.jpg

The engine has been worked on and hopefully will last me a lifetime and be able to drive me as far as my heart desires!
Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf-img20150227wa0037.jpg

The engine bay is getting painted too. Subhasis has told me that this is the cars 5th color change!
  1. Light pista green
  2. red
  3. off white
  4. white
  5. BONUS! RC book first mentions blue!
Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf-img20150227wa0028.jpg

It's starting to look like the donor car was a good choice! but the new doors need a little work just to make sure this job it done right THIS TIME!!!
Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf-img20150227wa0020.jpg

My car had manually winding windows while my donor had power windows so a little work would be needed to return the manual winders( IT'S A VW! lets leave those luxuries to the baby shark and the blue whale)
Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf-img20150227wa0029.jpg

I don't know if its a good thing or a bad thing but before I got the car, the car was 'restored'. some time between then and when I bought it, the bonnet flew open, damaged itself and broke the windscreen. I bought the car with a sparkling new windscreen and a bonnet which displayed a hole where the quarter inch of filler broke off during the incident.
the new bonnet fits well but leaves gaps in areas so that needs to be addressed

Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf-img20150227wa0039.jpg

The doors used to creak when they opened(could my little Smokey be haunted?! like christine(1983)?! or tarzaan the wonder car!?!(I now have Tata sky and have blocked Z cinema which seems to have loved that awful movie) I did read the shadow of an old sticker on the dash reading "Bunty", I should probably be good to it)
I was quite jealous when I saw an Orange 2 door rabbit with a friend and his doors snapped shut. I'm glad to hear that the doors are fitted well now! no haunted creaking! No rubbing the quarter panels! and less panel gaps!
Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf-img20150227wa0025.jpg

Till next time!

note to mods: please try to help me out with the last post, the text wasn't formatted or something and the picture has been spread across the screen

Re: Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf

UPDATE!

"Don't sell the donor till the job is done, you might need some more parts"

I got some new pictures from Subhasis yesterday. some bits which I needed to complete the car.

Unlike my car, the donor has all the switches and buttons, a single key to start the car and a good steering wheel
I will use this aftermarket steering wheel till I fix my original or get something better but the wheel still looks period correct and alot like the GTI wheel. hopefully this speedo works as mine is dead.
Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf-img20150314wa0022.jpg

The donor has the sun shades, but that doesn't mean you don't need to wear any
Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf-img20150314wa0023.jpg

The center console was missing in my car, the donor seems to have been owned by a chain smoker at some point who needed what looks like 3 cigarette lighters at a time. I guess I'll replace that with some gauges when I find suitable ones.
Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf-img20150314wa0024.jpg

The good news is that the white car has a good floor which doesn't need work.
The car should be ready in a week and a half so I should be picking it up on the Sunday after next. painting should start on tuesday.
thinking of some DIY's once it gets here:
1.Custom retro roof rack with wooden beams
2.Custom chrome bumper
3.Storage compartment or fridge(expect a plot twist)
4.'Sticker bomb' a rear quarter glass
5.Custom retro looking audio player
6.Custom door cards
hope I actually do at least half of those

Re: Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf

50 shades of VW(actually just 5)

The old man whispers-"Red will look... sexy"

I know it's been a while and there have been some delays, but considering the amount of work being done, I find it fair, infact still ahead of the game.
my shiny little 1.5 engine is finally done and has been fitted.(no baby! no one shall call you a tractor engine ever again)

some rust and holes were there in the engine bay area, they were patched up(notice the tire rubber patch work)

Brilliant Job with the Rabbit.
Engine looks fabulous, waiting for the car to be complete.
What wheels are they, Vento alloys?

Thank you!
The valve cover was chromed by the previous owner, probably happened during one of the multiple times he opened up the engine(the block had shown signs of that and has been rectified)

The car started off with 98x4 14in fiat wheels, They looked weird, were a bit off with the pcd and were rubbing the brake calliper cover so I swapped them for cash + 14in steel wheels which I haven't used yet. I put the wheels off of my jetta onto the golf and drove it to Pune. will be putting the originals back, but with a twist

My plan for the wheels is a little 'different' and I've never seen it on a car here(though its popular with the VW guys in europe). Going to give it a try

Re: Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf

Choosing a path
"She not for you"- what scarface(1983 movie character) may have said if I mentioned the donor car
As my Golf nears completion there is now the matter of what to do with the left overs?
I had planned on fixing up the donor, I have the paperwork and had found a nice 1.6 5 speed diesel from an mk2 Jetta, I thought they'd make a nice pair, one for my dad and one for me, but I no longer see the point in having two. I prefer some variety and the other projects need attention.
If anyone would like to take up the project (at a reasonable price of course) do inform me by friday with a message otherwise I will scrap the car when I reach and shove whatever fits into my car and maybe I'll end up with something like this in my house

Re: Smokey the rabbit - 1980 VW Golf

There is an exact same Golf in Pune with a friend. He restored the car using another donor car. Coincidentally it bears a similar Txx registration as well.

Congrats on the restoration. P.S: Do you live in Kamat complex off Miramar?
