Dear Jaideep, originally the car came with a plastic isolater (I have that in my car), this probably was a later modification.

Congrats Dr. Dehram, she is nice. By the way can you share pictures of the select that your friend got. It would be nice to see.

Karlos, on the subject of knobs below the dash board - here are some references -

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-abcd0014.jpg

From the thread -http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/post-war/37052-restored-fiats-super-select-others.html (First Page)

We have to ask Jayd chettan for more information on the model year / chassis plate of the car

Second picture is of our Very own Rony's car (but a 1964), from his garage.

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-ss-airbox.jpg

And another reference is from a very original Bangalore Super Select

Posted at - http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/post-w...others-27.html (on the 27th Page).

I would request Bangalore guys to check with the owner of MYM 2246 on the chassis number of the car. Also some guys can date the registration number as well.

Thank you for this. However out of the three knobs that would have been fitted (fourth is blank), two are still intact and definitely original - it is only the choke knob that is missing in my car. While I have seen many Super Selects with the black later style of knobs, I have also seen cars with the older style with yellow inserts. There were always minor variations in fittings, and since I have two out of three of a particular style I will try and complete the same set.

On another note, I am missing the original rear view mirror with the courtesy light - can anyone help me source one?

Oh my God! What a car, what a restoration, what a thread!!

Terrific job, Karl. Time constraints have led me to be a bit infrequent on Team-BHP, and I've missed out on a whole lot of good. Karl, your car is solely responsible for me getting back to spending long nights - nose to the screen, watching Team-BHP's awesome pages.

I'm assuming the car is still in Mumbai, and would love to see her and take a ride.

: Behram: Wonderful new acquisition!!

Re: Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select

I wonder what it would be like to use this car as a daily commute vehicle, with all those eyes prying,
Seriously, is the maintainence too cumbersome for a daily use?

Re: Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select

20th September 2015

Digging into parts I had bought years earlier, I found this original Italian horn ring, a cool period accessory.

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-2.jpg

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-3.jpg

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-4.jpg

I only had one original winder handle on the car, luckily I found two more. Still short of one. These are aluminium, with the milling fitting on the inside, and a full black knob. Later units had an open top to the knob.

Original item confirmed by part number.

22th September 2015

Fitting starts on the final painted body

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-2.jpg

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-3.jpg

The drums were sand blasted, though that gave the surface a rough finish, it would probably have been better to just buff them out.

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-4.jpg

The wheels were sandblasted and primered

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-5.jpg

4 of the 5 wheels are stamped J/62 - I assume that's a date code

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-6.jpg

The horn I posted earlier was in rough shape. It is being carefully detailed.

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-7.jpg

This is the first time I'm seeing Italian units for the side indicators. The taillights and number plate lights were Italian too, but one damaged and one missing, so aluminium ones will replace them.

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-9.jpg

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-8.jpg

The first time I've seen this plug-in clip - probably for routing cables.

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-10.jpg

23rd September 2015

The door and wiper hardware was treated - looks as good as new. Wiper assembly is original Magnetti Marelli.

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-11.jpg

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-12.jpg

The meter surround was luckily in great shape with no cracks. It was lightly polished to freshen up. The meter was serviced too.

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-13.jpg

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-16.jpg

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-17.jpg

All the original bolts were carefully retained and treated.

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-14.jpg

The horn finally assembled.

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-15.jpg

Door locks were zinc coated, look great.

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-b-18.jpg

25th September 2015

Fitting continues - new brake lines made. Brake system upgraded from a mix of API/Girling to fully Girling - with a new master cylinder and wheel cylinders. I'm very pleased with the detailing.

Excellent work and great thread Karl. We used to have a 1958 model Fiat 1100. The car was sold in early 2000 but we still have many of its spare parts with us including rear grab handles, winder handles, chromed On/Off switch etc. I will be visiting my hometown Lucknow at the end of October, I'll check there what all the parts we have with us right now. I hope we still have winder handle with us.

Below is the car we owned. We used to call it Italian Fiat (Please don't mind the dirt )

Re: Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select

Dear Karl - although it is not very clear in the photograph, please verify the valve hole diameter in the wheel rims. Italian wheel rims came with 15.5mm diameter holes, if so, you will need to fit adaptors on the valve stems before assembling the tubes on the wheels, otherwise the valve stems will get cut, be careful. These adaptors were used as OE on Matador tubes. If the holes are 11.5mm diameter, then nothing is required.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Re: Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select

30th September 2015

The previous owner's son mentioned that he remembers seeing the blue seat covers from day one (or at least decades) - so I was hopeful that the original seats would be intact underneath. Was I in for a treat!

The seats as we pulled them out.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-01.jpg

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-02.jpg

Peeling off extra padding - the springs are in good shape, no rust.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-03.jpg

Under the padding we find another blue cover
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-04.jpg

Finally the original material surfaces.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-05.jpg

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-06.jpg

After a quick wash the rear seat seems to be absolutely perfect.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-07.jpg

The magazine net too was fresh and tight - they usually sag, but this one has never been used!
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-08.jpg

Close up of the grain - it would be next to impossible to replicate this.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-09.jpg

The exposed frames were painted for rust protection without disturbing the seat.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-10.jpg

The bottom plates were treated too, which had slight surface corrosion.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-11.jpg

The base of one seat portion was frayed, so it was carefully repaired to keep it from further splitting.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-12.jpg

The steering box was dismantled and buffed to a new finish.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-13.jpg

The brake fluid container had decades of sediments and grime on it, but it cleaned up nicely. Its of terrific quality (being genuine Italian), and hasn't cracked or warped at all.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-14.jpg

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-15.jpg

The jewel/warning lights on the dash and roof lights were also carefully cleaned to look like new.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-16.jpg
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-17.jpg

All the original bolts were zinc coated for protection and a better appearance.
These are the original wheel bolts
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-18.jpg

Most bolts are still stamped FIAT.

This is the knob for the windscreen washer - unfortunately the rubber has cracked. Need to think of some clever way to fix it.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-20.jpg
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-21.jpg

Everyday we find something amazing on this car. In this case original Phillips and Osram bulbs, stamped FIAT.

Re: Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select

1st October 2015

The engine was not opened since she was running perfectly. The sump was cleaned out, and engine repainted.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-01.jpg

Brake fluid container re-fitted, looks good as new.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-02.jpg

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-03.jpg

2nd October 2015

Oil filter container repainted in what I assume are the correct colours. Eventually need to figure out what decal to make for it. Filter cartridges themselves are not available, so was custom made.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-04.jpg

The original Magneti Marelli coil was detailed and ready to fit.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-05.jpg

Engine finally in.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-06.jpg

I'm really happy with the appearance - it'll break my heart to drive it home, by the time she gets there it'll not look half as good :(
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-07.jpg

6th October 2015

Fitting continues. All new wiring starts to go in. A new alternator is fitted.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-08.jpg
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-09.jpg

The seats were treated to a good clean and protective feed.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-10.jpg

9th October 2015

The housings for the engine bay lights are refinished, and look good as new.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-11.jpg
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-12.jpg

The combination switch assembly is rebuilt and detailed. Pity we won't see the rear side once fitted.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-13.jpg
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-14.jpg

The siren that was fitted to the car is also being serviced. I forget the name now, but it is stamped made in England.

Headlight base frame rings are detailed.

Re: Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select

13th October 2015

The car finally back on 4 wheels. The wheels themselves were blasted and painted, but in great shape anyways. A couple of missing clips were replaced, and new MRF Twin Tread cross plies were fitted. Luckily I had bought them some time back, now they are hard to find.

Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-03.jpg

We started looking at options for the headliner material. While a close match these days is near impossible, we went with an off white that looks pretty good.

The engine was started, and alls well so far. We are on the hunt for an original waterpump, if any leads please do share. The local ones just don't perform.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-07.jpg

Here are cast numbers for the plate, still needing minor finishing.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-08.jpg

21st October 2015

The headliner is in, and looks good. Luckily the grab handles and roof lights were present with the car, saving me trouble finding them.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-09.jpg

The original mirror was missing, and managed to locate a rough one, which was carefully restored. Still missing the aluminium jacket that is fitted on the frame to conceal the wire.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-10.jpg

Ashtray shines up nice
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-11.jpg

Door jam switch was carefully stripped of paint and cleaned up.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-12.jpg

As most parts arrive from chrome, fitting begins in full swing.
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-13.jpg

The engine bay lighting is set up
Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select-14.jpg

The horn button was dismantled and carefully cleaned and serviced. Again, everything has Italian markings on it

The steering wheel was always wrapped in a protective grip, so has stayed perfectly. There are some light marks of the grip wrap, but we are ignoring them for now, don't want to risk further damage.

The parking lights too are Carello units

The engine bay and rear view mirror lighting complete, still on Italian bulbs

Once again a superb thread, glued in.

Meanwhile this is what you are looking for its not a siren but a gyro based immobilizer.
