Re: Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon

On friday, I had my first test drive of the car. It drives very well and due to the fluid flywheel, the car is very smooth. The engine is eager and the pre-selector gear box is quite smooth.

Christopher was also very impressed with the power. There is enough power, and rarely do you need 1st gear. Even the Manual says that one can move the car on 2nd gear on flat roads.

After the test drive

The rear is completed

The lights have to be aligned, and the badge bar is work in progress

The door panels and carpet have to be fitted. The final door setting will be done.

Cheers

If the boot of the car looks like this, I wonder how the rest of the car will look!

Re: Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon

On this auspicious day of Vijayadashami, the DB18 was delivered by Christopher. The journey for this restoration began in March 2017, hence it has been a 3+ years since we started. Better late than never!

Chris was pleasantly surprised by the original Daimler Tool Kit.

The car is ready for delivery

I just love the paint colours and combination. My wife, who is an artist in her own right, played a major role in our choices. Glad we listened to her!

Mandatory picture of all the main players of this rebuilt. On the left with Dad is Pankaj & Srinand. With me is Chris. In front the brown dog is the chief security officer "Blacky"!

We move her to Pankaj's shop for the final paint detailing.

The car is such a pleasure to drive. Thanks to BHPian Vanam, who took this picture and brought up the rear as we moved the car to Pankaj's place.

Chris was me in the front. The car ran very well and it is a real pleasure to drive. The car is very drive-able and will be great for the long drives. The car did not heat at all and performance was very satisfactory.

We followed Pankaj to his shop!

The car should be home in a couple of weeks post the paint detailing and number plate being done.

Thanks to all my fellow BHPians, who have followed my thread. I post more detailed pictures, once the car come home.

Cheers

Was thinking exactly that, didn't say it out, that's all.

The painstaking build - it will reap its reward. Having resources is one thing, but willingness and passion to use it in the right way on such a worthy build is another thing altogether. The whole family deserves the credit for it.

Re: Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon

The original tool kit is always a prized possession. Getting one with the car is rare. These are always very expensive and in lot cases the owners sell them separately.

My car did not have the original tool kit, but I was able to source an original Daimler Tool Kit. I have since added to the collection.

Re: Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon

What a fantastic car and congratulations on the epic restoration, the history of the car is so fascinating and it thankfully is with a person who loves and values the history and does justice to it. Wish you many happy years of motoring fun.

About 2 weeks ago a friend of mine ( though much senior in age and wisdom)in the UK bought, in Auction a 1949 Daimler DB18 Drophead Coupe , he sent me a few snaps of the car , this car also has a Wilson Preselect gearbox and fluid flywheel, so no clutch, semi automatic.
He has only driven it a couple of times since purchase, for smalls spins round the block and says its a lovely experience albeit a bit heavy with no power steering and manual brakes. He is an active old man and at age 84 is still a ardent hands on vintage motorcycle buff (Mostly Douglas now), My association with him is because of the Douglas club, Now with his Daimler , he is busy tackling small issues on the car .

Re: Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon

Thank you cjt2012 for your kind words. I always believe that the ownership experience is significantly better, the history of the car is known and you are able to relate to the previous owners. All my cars were in long term ownership, so was fortunate to be able to connect to previous owners

The involvement and dedication in the restoration, makes to joy of ownership even more enriching. When you have great friends and the family involved too, as in my case, it is very satisfying.

Thank you for sharing the pictures of your friends DB18, Drop Head Coupe. What a fantastic car, looks great. Congratulation to the owner and please convey my regards to him

My father is 85 years old and the passion for old cars remains undiminished. Feel fortunate.

Cheers
