Lovely thread! While my experience with Ambassadors have largely been limited to taking rides in the yellow taxis in Kolkata, my father practically grew up with these cars. My grandfather had a black Mark 1 whose registration ended with 8000 (my dad doesn't remember the reg series), and my father's first car was an Ambassador too!

Sharing a couple of photos of my dad and his car (in the late 80s):

What's missing from this thread are the period pictures from family's albums, I am sure there must be atleast a few pictures, would be great if you can get your hands on them and share here.

It's good to see an Amby that too a black one. Seeing this car kindled some old memories when our family owned an Amby Mark-II which served our family for almost two decades.

Congratulations Karthik and Arun , this thread has reignited my memories when I purchased an Amby and wrote an article Delving Classic on team bhp. This car you managed to acquire is an absolute masterpiece!!! Congratulations on this priceless purchase. My amby too is black and we should meet up sometime in Bangalore with the classics. Please let me know whenever an ambassador meet happens in Bangalore I would love be part of the same.

Man!!!

This one got back a lot of memories. I remember back in the day, in the late 80's we had a Fiat Safari and a White Ambassador Mark IV.

We mostly used the Ambassador for long trips mainly from Bombay (Now Mumbai )

Was able to locate this one picture only as of now. This one was clicked on the numerous tips between Mumbai and Pune. It used to take around 8-10 hours back then considering road blocks and "Ghat sections" There was no expressway back then. And as far as i can remember, the cars used to stall due to over heating, mainly near Khandala.

I learnt how to drive on this particuliar Amby! MRJ 692. Our family sold it off when I was still under-aged to drive. Searched all over the city to locate this car, sadly, was unable to find it.

Hope to find some more pics of this Amby of mine in the albums stacked below my bed!

Wow! Such a great find man !l She looks gorgeous and very original .
Waiting to see how you go about with future works on this car and those tiny bits to make her perfect .the fuel tank issue was expected even my friends amby had similar issue as well but he opened it up and restored it fully .lucky you found a original replacement tank
A quick detail would make her glow

I'm pretty sure it was a Mark 4!

Thanks Arun, for sharing this lovely thread and great write up. I have always said that the joy of ownership is significantly enhanced when we have a good connect with the previous owner. Nostalgia associated with the car makes the ownership more full filling.

Sad the note that the previous owner is no more. At least he is assured that the car is a great new owner and will be looked after well. He would genuinely Rest In Peace.

It was nice to have you both and the car in the RTO Event.

Wish you many more miles and joy of ownership of this car.

Stay safe

Facia might have been changed over the years but registration series suggests it's of mid 60s

Congrats on adding yet another icon to your garage. A real tribute to Uncle by bringing his car back to days of glory.

I had started with my Amby restoration after many hiccups and suddenly lockdown-1 struck bringing the process to a complete halt. Restarted again in early 2021 and it's nearing completion.

I am tempted to update my unfinished thread from 2 years ago after reading yours. But now I feel it will be better to finish the restoration of the car first and then update the thread in one go.

Okay, if you say so! I feel my dad was not the kind who would mod his car right out from the showroom but I guess for this one he must have, as the dashboard, meters, front grill, headlights, parking lights (square kind), tail lights, bumpers, tyres, decals! Everything was of the mark 4.

Also, if my memory serves right, then he picked up the Ambassador after selling his Datsun Bluebird 510 (1600), which he had imported from Japan in the 70's.

He always stopped me from modding, looks like he was also a part of this circus! Daddy did some jhol looks like!

Congratulations Arun!

Brilliant post and kudos to Arun and Funkycar for the remarkable journey. Having a classic like this is 'Possession', not ownership and wish you a great time!

Salute to the human touch to the story..

Many of us, particularly the 90s and older, usually have some connections with the good old Ambassador. I had read this thread some days back and then started to search for the many images I had clicked, some years back. Ultimately I just got hold of a few and here is ours. The last time it ran (dad acted as the chauffeur driving us to a popular eating joint), was probably in 2011. Dad has stopped driving thereafter since the car used to get stalled. I understand that it's not something that difficult to rectify (reading all these threads) provided one can have a good technician. Restoration is something I intend to pick up with some spare Vitamin M. For now, the good old 77 model is lying in the garage.

Do not consider the reading
