The Suvega moped!

Hi,
Does anyone remember this Moped at all, from the early days of automotive evolution ? Damn, I hope I haven't given away my age...reminiscing about this antique !
This was my first set of motorised wheels during college days...before I moved on to my brother's hand me down - an old army cast off Bullet !
I have very fond memories of the Suvega and running around in Bangalore with this contraption !
If there are memories and owners of this wonderful piece of wheels, write in - lets swap stories and memories!!!

Hey you just happened to remind me of the best days of my life which were spent on an ideal jawa 3 geared 50cc bike overtaking all those suvegas and lunas in Coimbatore.
For all you know Coimbatore might still have a few running and fit.

Of course we remember the Suvega - favourite vehicle of 'officers' of the BGML in Kolar Gold Fields at that time. Suvega + Miner's Helmet made a great combo - I was too young to ride one so my cousin used to give me a lift in her prized possession.

Sri Balaji Mopeds, Coimbatore were the manufacturers if I'm not mistaken.

Yes I do too - there were a bunch around in Jamshedpur, and after I bought my 5 geared "Hero Hawk" I used to have fun overtaking them on inclines! (Now officially part of the "old" boys club ? )

It was a mining town - whats the most available piece of protection? If you think thats hip, think of old men wearing a miners helmet, a proper coat and tie, iyengar style DHOTI and shoes, sitting on a brown put-putty which was all of 50cc.

BTW the manufacturer was Mopeds India - I just realized that I got them confused with Sri Chamundi Motors, the manufacturers of the ill-fated but brilliant Peugeot Sportif.

My first "project" when I was like 14 years old was a moped....I think it was a Enfield Mofa but it could have been a Suvega.

Bought it from my friends dad for 200 rupees...first thing was to make it run with new piston rings. I remember riding the thing back from his place and the engine sounded like an angry rattle snake LOL.

Then we thought of modifying it for the local dirt track races by mounting a 50cc TVS engine but money ran out. This thing didnt have any suspension front or rear and it would ve been interesting to see it run on the rough dirt track.

There is a pristine example of a Suvega with a guy I know. Will ask him if he has pics.

I think remember a few features of the Suvega. It had a mini muffler below the engine and the tailpipe was tipped down. Did'nt extend all the way to the back of the moped. Other than that, it made a really painful moaning and groaning sound. Looked outdated compared to the Luna TFRs and Hero Majestic.

The Sportiff looked like a spaceship in comparision.

Hello forum-dwellers,
I actually began the first of my 'motorized two-wheel' escapades way back in
school on my Dad's trusty old Suvega.
No shock absorbers at all. Sprung-seat suspension for the rear(end)
and simple greased-spring suspension for front-forks.
Petrol tap was a screw-type worm on top of the petrol tank under the seat.
Had a plastic filler cap. Made a lot of commotion but not much motion.
Subsequent models did have rear shocks but models were un-mistakably Suvega.
If I'm not mistaken they used to be made in collaboration/technology transfer
with Motobecane of France. Production probably began in the 70s.
Manufactured in India by:-
MOPEDS INDIA LTD.,
Regd. Office and Works:
3RD MILE 4TH FURLONG,
TIRUPATHI RENIGUNTA RD.,
P.B.NO.11,
TIRUPATHI POST - 517 506 CHITTOOR DIST. (A.P.)
Central Office:
AVANASHI ROAD, COIMBATORE - 641011 - (T.N.)

4 Models used to be made over a period of time:
Suvega Super 50
Suvega 717
Suvega Samrat
Suvege Super Delux

Check this link out - Abilities India Piston & Rings Ltd.
they still show a piston assembly available for the Suvega.

There also used to be a very tall moped -a speed demon compared to
the Suvega those days- called the "Lakshmi".
Had really tall wheels- perhaps similar to a bicycle's 22"s.
Much more rarer to see them then.
Before the original (Kinetic) Luna and the Luna TFR showed up.

When I was a kid they were pretty popular in Bangalore. In fact, people used to call any moped a suvega the way they call copiers 'xerox' machines
