The engine block with eight valves-some of the doddering studs had made life hell after their divorce from the block...There are brass bushes on the engine block over which these studs have to be fastened. The stud commit "harakiri" with the bush.

Thanks DD. I was at the workshop yesterday and had spent a lot of time seeing the work going on.
Actually, the diesel heart is OK for daily usage. This one has the original Side Valve, 1472 cc, BMC engine. Many of these engines were replaced by the then Landmaster owners who had fitted diesels or even the BMC 1489 cc, Over Head Valve (OHV) engine of the Ambassador. So only a few Landmasters are left with the side valve petrol engine.
I hence like to stick to it only for its originality trying to keep it as original as possible.

I have again been following the work progress on the Landmaster. Incidentally, a few of the studs that fasten the engine head with the block got bent while the fitment and trial of the crank movement was being done.These have been now replaced and the work again is expected to begin next Monday 28/11/2011.
The new aluminum water jacket has been fabricated by Shri Aqueel Bhai in the same workshop where the miniature Daimler Benz (1886) was built by Shri Iqbal Ahmed.

Thanks for the detailing. Happy to see the photo of a nice craftsman in the previous set of snaps. We can't call the old people as mechanics, they really craft the things. The new generation people just know to replace, not to repair! Sorry for being OT!

Thanks Glomus for your positive views.
The engine head studs are again posing problems. The studs can't withstand the internal engine pressure created and are giving way again. Now newer studs are being fabricated to withstand pressures of all kinds. The engine block has now been mounted and fitted to its proper place.

Meanwhile, the old, tattered rubber bushes of the springs and shock absorbers are being replaced.
The fuel tank and the fuel lines are also being cleaned.

I have really enjoyed reading this thread. I am glad to see a Landmaster with its original engine - this must be very rare now.
I live in New Zealand and I have a 1956 Morris Oxford (series II) - a very similar car to a Landmaster, but all series II (and III) Oxfords had a 1489cc OHV engine and a heater.

It looks like a good job is being done rebuilding the engine.
On the sidevalve engine it is important to check the condition of the timing gears at the front of the engine. On the UK built engines one of the gears was originally made of fibre which eventually strips its teeth. Could this be the same for the HM sidevalve engines?

If I can be of any assistance to Landmaster owners I would be happy to do so.

Thanks Rob for your feedback. I will check the timing gears since the engine is opened. The example you have must be the British version of the Morris Oxford Series II.The Indian ones came with the side valve derived from the Morris MO Series.This engine also powered our Ambassadors (Series III) in the initial years after launch in 1958.. Breaking News: My Lady in Black has been fully repaired as is the news of today! The car is back on its four wheels and has been tested by the workshop during a 4 km drive. The engine is also being run in the idle mode. Next the drive will take it about 30-40 kms,to test the newly done engine's endurance. And thereafter it will be homeward bound, right where it belonged.

Congratulations!!! Nice to know your car is road ready again. Are those parking lights of glass? It is really really difficult to source them now. I'm unable to find tail light assemblies for my landy without luck. Let me know if you come across them.

Yes, although mine was built-up in New Zealand by Dominion Motors after being imported as a CKD kit.

The Indian ones came with the side valve derived from the Morris MO Series.This engine also powered our Ambassadors (Series III) in the initial years after launch in 1958.. The 1489 cc OHV later followed.

So, even the first Ambassadors had the side valve engine! I did not know that.

Meanwhile,got a pair of the now a days, rarely available front parking lights. Because the company JMI (India) has closed shop about two years back.

They are a useful spare part to have, and brand new too!

Hi rob_ox,
I have a spare set of the parking lights, so that is not an immediate requirement. But my car is not having the original tail lights, thats the only thing missing externally. I need the whole assembly and unable to find them. Ya, it may be difficult to send them from New Zealand to India and the cost could work out to be too expensive. I once found these on ebay uk, but it was too expensive so had to pass.

Btw, saw your landy in your profile. It is awesome man, so clean and in such great condition.

Thanks Vinay. The parking lamp cover is of plastic.The one fitted to the car now (also JMI) is about 5 years old.For tail light covers you can try these at Opera House or at Chor Bazar both in Mumbai if you ever visit.I can pm you the contacts for the procurement.

Thanks again Rob for the information.Meanwhile, I am yet to check up the timing gear you had told about (fibre) with my workshop people.Will do so soon and post about that here.Since the engine is now reassembled, I will ask the experts there to brief me about it.
If you remember in 2006, a team comprising Ms Tim and Mr Joe had undertaken a journey Oxford 2 Oxford from Oxford ,UK to Oxford , New Zealand with the 1956 Morris Oxford Series II to commemorate its 50 years.Were you able to meet the duo there? I missed meeting them here in India but later had contacted them through email.

the OE LUCAS parking lens were made of glass and is now extremely rare.The ones available as spares in INDIA were always plastic.
The plastic park light assy made by JMI was available cheap till 2-3 years ago.But due to the scramble for stocking such parts by the enthusiasts the prices have gone up and the availability become less

Hi Anjan, Thank you for the reply. My visiting Mumbai is a rare possibility, atleast not in any foreseeable future. But do PM me the contacts, If anyone is visiting I can ask them.
