Re: Classic Volkswagens in India

Nice find Yardshark, need pics of the other side with the cargo door hinges showing and vin plate details if you have them, also pics of the rear lights please we can then narrow it down to exact build date and export code.Semiphores were used till around 61 depending on which country it came from, looks like 9 outward faceing vents,so not 50-to early 55 as they have only 8 vents , so could be upto around anything from early mid 55 to late 62.
look forward to more pics.

First of all are you sure it is a Type -1 beetle engine?
I am asking this because beetle engines never had this ''B'' code, but Bus engines in the period 68-70 had it.
All VW engines had this alphabet prefix from 1966 model year onwards.
all 1200 engines after 1965 are "D"' code engines.
if it is a bus engine then it is likely to be 1500 cc.

Its a 1600cc Twin port engine, these engines came in Baywindow's starting from 1969 - 1971. Later all the Baywindows carried 1303 twin port engines.

Barring 1972 where all American Baywindow's were manufactured with 1500cc engines. But few models were manufactured with walk through aisle came with 1708 cc Twin port engine. But this was only for 8 month period. And i am lucky to own one such rare model.

I believe your bus is from Europe and so it is likely to have a 1500cc engine. But 1500cc never had twin ports .Actually 1500cc engines were intended primarly to use in Type 1 but were fitted to Type2 and variant models. The 1500cc baywindows are there even in 1975

Re: Classic Volkswagens in India

Guys, I'd spotted a red convertible Beetle last month on old airport road. I could see it just for 3-4 seconds as it whizzed past in the traffic. It was top-down, and had beig-ish interiors, and the top was, if I recall correctly, dark black or brown in color. It was being driven by, I guess, a middle aged/aged man, and was shining. Do you know about this bug?
I would really love to have a ride in it.
