An acquaintance had told me about it. I forget where, I think he owned it or wanted to own it, I cannot recall. I have lost contact unfortunately.

Is for sale at Pro Bono Publico in Delhi, if you want panacea for your aching heart. I don't know exactly what the figure is, but believe the asking would make for rather expensive cardiac treatment!

A friend is looking to purchase a Beetle. Attached is an engine bay shot - can any of the gurus here positively identify what spec of engine it is? Owner claims it is a 1600, and not original to the car.

Well i does look like a 1600cc to me.But the air suction hoses are missing on the two side which are the silver coloured pipe like things in the one i am posting and i don't think the air cleaner is original probably taken of from some other car.Compare it to the pic given below. The pic below is of the green 1600 cc done up by us.

While I cannot ID whether it is 1600, it is a Dual Port engine (they came in 1300 and 1600 varieties -- starting '71). See the inlet manifold and doghouse cooler. The alternator is a later addition. It is still running the generator type fuel pump. The engine seal rubber is installed incorrectly. Ironically, the picture in the next post has the alternator type fuel pump with a generator and the improperly installed engine seal.

Karl, that engine is a twin port 1303, and generally they are called 1600 by many all over.

Somehow that engine does not seem to fit into that engine bay, the airfilter is from an early model, lots of mix and matches there.

If your friend can stay away from this, its good.

Else he can pick it up since its anyways a Beetle by heart

Stay away unless the price is right. Am I starting something? Never mind, if your friend feels that the car is 'worth' it, then go ahead.

Tell us what was decided in the end.

Cheers harit

I hope the gurus are kind to me if I'm wrong. It doesn't look like a 1600 to me at all. More like a 1500, or also likely a 1300.

@Pavan, for my knowledge, could you please explain what exactly you mean by, "that engine is a twin port 1303, and generally they are called 1600 by many all over"? Your knowledge of VWs is amazing.

I think Pavan is referring to the fact that the dual-port engines first came on 1302/1303 Super Beetles in the cars. The engine itself is not 1303cc. It is not an older 1300 or 1500 -- it has a dog-house cooler which was intro'd on the DP 1300/1600. Plus, if you look closely at the engine tin and see the pattern of the heater ports that were welded up, it matches a '71-on engine not the earlier 1300/1500 tin.

Also, judging from the rear lid, the car itself could be '71 (IIRC, last year of the 2 sets of rear vents on the decklid).

VW Engines evolved from

1.1 L - Single Port
1.2 L - Single Port
1.3 L - Single Port and post 1973 became twin port
1.5 L - Single Port and remained that way
1.6 L - Twin port and discontinued after the advent of 1300 twin port engines

Thats limited to my knowledge, some one can correct me if i am wrong.

1.3L dual port was introduced in '71 on the 1302 Super beetle along with the 1.6L DP in the 1302S -- the S signifying the 1.6 l engine. The Single ports continued in production on the Standard models -- not sure when they ended, but it was not in '71. 1.6L DP continued in production in various guises (NA, FI, etc) till the end of Beetle's production.
