Raj,

Firstly, we get only spark plugs and oils for these aircooled VW's in India, rest all has to be ordered from abroad.

The parts are easily available, but the pain a car owner has to undergo to get these spares are

1) Search for a quality store on the web
2) Order them via a credit card or pay pal
3) Pay for the product even if its priced high
4) Pay for the shipping charges
5) Pay duty on them which is close to 60% of the product price

A very simple example. I purchased Brake pads, few misc., spares and suspension ball joints for the Bus which was together priced at $225. I ended up paying Rs. 18000/- on the whole which is $ 166 extra You can call it double.

It would be foolish if i say, classic VW spares come cheap. German NOS one's - You need to have all the luck to get hold of them from unscrulpous dealers. No one better than a car owner would be able to tell you this.

But, the longevity of these spares are 75% better than those available in India.

To the best of my info, the duty tarriff on such items is 34percent of the landed cost.ie, cost of the item plus shipping charges.

Re: Restoration of 1971 VW Baywindow Microbus: Restoration Complete

Nothing much to update on a Bus, thats as good as a Daily runner.

I am Happy, touchwood.....!

The Bus runs easily in heavy traffics, i have been using the bus off-late, and today drove it to office. It does Good speeds, have tried 80kmph many times with ease

But the main grouse , average FE is 8 kmpl.

it looks like a modern Sony car stereo .
The OEM suppliers to aircooled VW's were Blaupunkt,Emden etc. They had the VW part number etched on them and also had VW logo knobs

Yes Ajay and I also noticed the one which Mr. Kadam has on his baywindow is that of a Bug and NOT of the Bus. You have attached the correct picture in your post and which is exactly what I have on my 71 Baywindow.

Re: Restoration of 1971 VW Baywindow Microbus: Restoration Complete

Some pics from my family outing last weekend.

It was a mid-night drive.

We started by around 10:00 pm in the night, came back home at around 1:45 am

Bro in the driving seat, me in the front. Dad n mom in the mid row, Wifey and sis-in-law in the third row. And my kid, all around the bus

This was the first time full family was driving around in the Bus, after all these years, people got to understand, the Bus was as reliable as our other cars, hence that odd midnight drive.

With this drive, the Bus completed 250 kms last week.
