Getting old eh Inder

Its actually "Volkswagenwerk AG - GERMANY"

Here is a pic for you.

Nothing much to update, the Bus is as usual as Cheerful it should be and a Mighty runner.

The only grouse has been the 8 kmpl FE.

I could do a 320 km drive in under 7 hours from Chennai to Bangalore couple of months ago ( our T-BHP'ian Kittugadu tried catching me in his jeep, but this fellow was cruising at 120 that time )

VW Bus - new restoration project!

Hey Guys,

Finally found my "bus" in Goa after looking around for few years. I am travelling there tomorrow to do the deal and bring it home. This is going to be a one hell of the project, especially since I live in the UK and am only here for few weeks every year.

I'll know of the condition of the bus when I visit but I need some guidance on other peripheral aspects:

1. What documents do I need from the owner and what should I watch out for?
2. What issues could I encounter with RTO for interstate transport?
3. What is the best way to transport it 750 odd kms Goa -> Mumbai? and where can I find it in Mapusa, Goa?
4. Any other things you can think of?

Thanks,
Nilesh

This fellow has been a Silent Performer from the day its been restored.

I know i have not given it my 100%, inspite of that, its never given up. Thanks buddy.

Though i have a few minor things to attend to, but other restorations have kept me too busy to attend to, No complains, its Fresh, polished, Runs Soooper and again my friend has lent his COVERED parking space for me for some time.

Hello Pavan Kadam,

Sorry for hijacking your thread; thought these pictures might be of interest to you. During New Year holidays I visited an old town called Monterey, California and saw many VW vehicles. Here are some of the pics:

Re: Restoration of 1971 VW Baywindow Microbus: Restoration Complete

Got the Bus home yesterday after a long hibernation of 6 months.

Spotted a T-BHP car enroute.

The Front indicators were Fake one's and had faded and cracked. Got replacement USED but Original Lenses.

Also my window winders were giving me a little issues, so got a replacement winding machines to set it right.

Re: Restoration of 1971 VW Baywindow Microbus: Restoration Complete

One Casualty faced yesterday night the sliding door bottom rollers gave way and now its IMPOSSIBLE to operate the slide action on it. Have ordered for the replacement part from Pankaj - Jalopy shop (T-BHP - bullet_boy) and hopefully i should receive it in a few days.

Just changed the parking position in a long time after ferrying around my brothers group of friends who were home yesterday.

Did any cars have sliding doors back then? They are sold as a feature on MPV's now and are useful when have parallel parked cars. Must have been quite novel back then

Many vans of the time were available with optional sliding doors, though it was never a popular option. The BMC J4 and the Peugeot J7 come to mind.

The only car I can think of with sliding doors was the Kaiser Darrin. Rather appealing IMO, but again the car was manufactured in very limited numbers!

Before the Baywindow era, VW too offered sliding doors on the split bus as an optional fitment. Again, not a popular option, and these vehicles are super rare.
There was one such split bus with the sliding door option being used as a schoolbus in India. This was sadly exported out some years ago to Austria.
You can follow the restoration of that bus here :

I agree. Sliding doors are cool. The only thing cooler than a sliding door on a Bus, are two.

While i still await theBulletboy- Pankaj to send me the New Rollers for the Sliding door, Had these with me since a long time.

Giving the Bus a little Girlish look, but will keep it for sometime as i spent close to 1 hour in this DIY

What a lovely looking bus. @Pavan, next time I am in Bangalore, please, I would love to meet you and (to be honest, the actual reason ) have a look at this beautiful vehicle.

Have always followed several of your threads as and when time permits, but I must say - this would be the best of the lot (of your restorations).
