The fourth picture is of an early 1980's example.
I wonder why a very old Amby doesn't have the butterfly windscreen wipers? Change of body? Tinkering on the old body? And then a WBA registration on an Ambassador...would the experts please help me learn more about these very rare cars called Ambassador?

Edit:
No, maybe not rare, since I just noticed that there are lots of them on this thread, including cars made recently. Maybe each one is a unique, bespoke specimen, with subtle differences distinguishing one from another. So much for me to learn...

Re: Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery

A Mark II found rotting in Jaipur (27/08/2014). The car is a 1964 model as it has the stock dash with two Smiths meters and a clock. Only the early Mark II's came with the Smiths clock. The clock was gone by late 1964. The two Smiths meters continued and by Dec 1965 Indian made Yenkay meters were ushered in.
The chrome plating is still in pretty good condition but may need to be buffed for a better shine.Since most parts were still imported, the car durability shows.
This car is fitted with a diesel powerplant and has floor gears..

This is a driving school car clicked in Kolkata last week. It was originally a Mark II, dating back to 1965/66.

Re: Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery

A mid- 1960's Mark II facelifted to a Mark 4 and made into a Station Wagon in Kolkata. There were no Ambassadors available with a Station Wagon body then. It was only in the 1970's that the Station Wagon / Estate bodies started to appear. The owner had to get the car body made then in the early 1970's. The Mark 4 Porter was factory built with a HM Estate body and the car was called Hindustan Porter. Why was the Ambassador marque not used on the Porter is not known?

I had clicked this car in June 2008 and the first two pictures are from then.

Now FB friend Mr Souryadeep Mukherjee, from Kolkata has clicked this car a few days back - seems to have fallen on BAD days !

Re: Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery

A Landmaster spotted in South Kolkata. The owner has tried to maintain it well. However the dash is borrowed from a Mark 3 and the steering that of an Ambassador. Please also note that the top of the dash has the ventilation vents and not the usual Ambassador ash tray. The vents used to come with the OHV or the Mark I's as we call them. With the introduction of the Mark II the vents were replaced by an ashtray.

Re: Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery

A 1965 model from Kolkata that will complete 50 years on the roads soon. The dash and most trims are original but from the new era when the Smiths meters and many other "Made in England" components dissappeared. The tail lights are post Mark 3 and the tailfin top trims in chrome are also post 1984 - please note the gap between the tail light upper end and the trim. The trim used to end at almost the tail light upper end, but post 1984, the trim was shortened - cannot fathom any reason other than cost saving !

Dear anjanji - hello to you after a very long time. The reason is not cost saving alone, it is also ease of manufacturing and less chances of mismatch during assembly.

Best regards,

Re: Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery

Seeing this thread made me all nostalgic - posting a picture of our earstwhile family car (she was sold in 2010 (during a moment of weakness) and when I tried to buy her back in 2013, came to know that she was salvaged for her parts and scrapped )
