Hello all,
I'm in the midst of the restoration of a Merc benz 240 D.While as of now , i have completed a large portion of the tinkering work, i am now on the look out for some parts.
Although the merc showroom might be the first place i should look, would anybody have any other suggestions for the procurement of beadings and the various rubbers for the 240D? I apologise for the quality of the picture and promise to post more detailed shots of the car later this week.

Hi Inmate. Congrats on you restoration job. Is it an original 240D or was the engine swapped. 240Ds were made between 1973-76 and in its last years it also came with a 3 litre displacement. Which is your car? Actually the W115 shells have all the same fittings. Body rubber should not be such a problem to find. but finding body beadings will be a tough job. In any case i doubt if a new set will be available anywhere in India.

In fact a merc showroom is the last place you should look at for procurement of parts. They will niot be stocking such parts and may also have no or very few people to deal with older cars. Not to mention they will be exorbitantly expensive.

Look for a shop that stocks spares for this car. In Bombay new spares (engine, suspension, etc, etc) are all available with a few parts shops.

The car remains to be orignal in its entirerity. The engine is completely functional , infact i drove it a couple of metres a couple of days back. Although i noticed an unusually large amount of steam from the rediator, leading me to conclude that the gasket must have gone bust.
Procuring a new gasket might pose a challege.I am currently looking at having to get one made.
Although i might be digressing from the topic of the restoration, is it not true that W115 had a model with a larger wheelbase introduced in 1976?

W115's in their last year of manufacture came with some changes to the body specifically the greenhouse - The windscreen of this car and that of the W123 its successor are the same (interchangable) they did some changes to the green house but the rest I have been given to understand is the same my friend owns a 1976 220d RHD which they bought from a swiss gentleman working in Bhaba research in 1977/78. The car had run only 2300 km inside the Bhaba facility. She needs some TLC so my friend is going to fix her as his next project :)

Nice to see another 115 getting restored. From the title, I thought you were restoring a W123.

Canonball, the model you are talking about is the Facelift which was in 1973. it had a wider front grille, larger wraparound taillamps with ribs in them, and the quarter glasses were removed.

The version which Inmate is talking about is the W115 'Lang' which was the long wheelbase variant.They were made from 1968 to 1976.

JayD let me check as I know about the quarter glass - 73 changes I had a LHD petrol, my friend tells me that in the final 2 years of production some W123 changes were made which I am not sure came in the 1973 changes this guys is a restorer and an authority in classic mercs infact he accidently stumbled on the w123 windcreen bit when he had to replace his he ordered W115 windscreen and what turned up was a earlier year and would not fit, he was then told last year models share windscreens with w123 !!

Have you tried for these spares at Lazar's? They stock a lot of used/new German Auto spares... mostly Mercedes parts. They also service old German vehicles. It is in one of those narrow lanes behind J.C Road.

Developments are as follows

> the car is being run through a tapping for final smoothening
> a metal paste is due to be applied anytime this week before.

Santhosh, i did visit Lazer.. Thanks again for the directions and the address.

He has made a rough estimate for all the rubbers/beadings. He requires 15k give or take 1k.Please let me know if this is the right amount.

Glad that the lead was of help to you.

Regarding prices, V16 would be the best person since he owns several Mercs and is also restoring atleast two Mercs at the moment.

Lazar is pricier by atleast 5-10%, but must admit he sells quality stuff.

Buy them, since others would try and sell fake spares at a lower price which will again double your expenses replacing them later.
