My 1969 Royal Enfield Sherpa 175cc with Villers engine

Hi all Seniors

I am new to this site and ave been reading various threads on the classic beauties, i must say that this site is just ecstacy for me.

I have a couple of old bikes myself and know what it means

I am posting a few pictures of my 1969 Royal Enfield Sherpa 175cc with Villers engine this bike still fires however it has been a year now i have not had a chance to visit my native place and talk to it. I will be getting this bike to Mumbai soon because i am not in India at the moment

Hats off to all the people on this site who have been sharing their knowledge and making the past into present

Enfield Sherpa 175 CC

Wow!!! Its really great to see that someone here is having a sherpa. I was googling and searching in every forum to see if someone is having a sherpa. I am personally very much attached with this vehicle, since in my childhood my father was having a 1968 model Sherpa which he used for more than 3 years (1977-1980) without much complaints. He was the one and only doctor in our village, so had to travel a lot. One problem he was facing was with the spareparts, for which he had a comparison chart with that of the Minibullet and was procuring the spares from Chennai and Coimbatore. The bike run very well for more than 3 years, clocked more than 50 thousand KMs!! It was having no Ignition keys, and he installed one makeshift switch with a Rajdoot Key (the one like that of just a long pin). The bike was peacock green in color with a very typical noise, which my mom could recognize in the late night from KMs away. It had a poor mileage of 16 KMs (later I asked my dad about it) and was a real rough rider. I remember, it was having a brass Left-right toggle type petrol tap. If you are in need of the manual, I can procure it from my dad in India. I remember he had one Instruction manual and another manual which shows all spareparts with part numbers. Waiting for your photos..

Wow that is a really nice Sherpa. Do you have the taillight unit with you? A little cosmetics and it will be perfect, like the original rear shox, seat, taillamp unit, headlight/horn switch, choke lever. Unless you find it necessary, I think you need to lose that crash guard. These were made for the Jawas.

Another thing that I notice is the RE badge on the tank. Ive not seen a picture or a bike that has been completely restored but Im quite sure these are not the original ones. Sherpa's were made by EI (Enfield India) and not RE. I think EI got the rights to use RE only in the mid 90s. Although not many people restore post 1970 Enfields, the ones that Ive seen restored have always made this mistake and have RE stickers all over. I'l try to take a picture of the EI badge and post it. I have a very original 1980 EI STD350.

All the best.

(Continued) Again, I want to reiterate that Im not sure about your Sherpa since you say the model is 1969. I always thought these were made in the 70s. I think EI came into being in 1969-1970. The experts can clear this one for us.

Wow, lovely! I keep seeing 2 of such bikes here- one in a lovely red and another slightly modded but with the original Villiers engine.

Was this frame smaller/lighter than the bullets??

Never heard of a Sherpa from Enfield before - guess we learn new things every day!

I always thought the Crusader was the Villiers bike made by EI. Maybe this is a predecessor.

82 rawath Lovely example of a Sherpa. The speedo is the same (Yenkay) as the Vespa 150 (made by Bajaj Auto) and also the Rajdoot 175. Only a few Sherpas survive perhaps, till today. The Sherpa was preceded by the Royal Enfield Ensign that was sold alongwith the Bullet till the early 1960's. Soon the Sherpa came along and may have been in vogue till say 1971-72, I believe. In 1972, the Enfield Crusader came along which also had the Villiers 175 cc engine. The Crusader was replaced by the Enfield 200 (available in a two tone coloured petrol tank) sometime in 1978,that was later in the early 1980's called the Mini-Bullet only to prop up sales. None of the 175 cc or 200 cc Enfield's sold well, but for the Ensign, that had very little competition in the late 1950's in its class. The Rajdoot and Jawa were yet to be launched then.

Yup it was the predecessor. The crusader and then the 200 cc Mini-Bullet followed.

Stanher: The frame is different from the bullets. Yes it is lighter and smaller.

Anjan: Dint the Ensign and Prince share the same 148 cc engine? I once seen an Ensign I in Bangalore, the only one Ive seen till date. That person was explaining the difference between the Ensign I and II but Ive quite forgotten them now.

Thank you all for appreciating my Sherpa

I will be restoring this bike with the original parts which i have collected so far like, Original Taillight and the Number plate, Silencer, Villers Carb, Handle bar with a button like horn on it and the choke lever

I will start working on my classic bikes when i return to India during the monsoons

If you all have noticed, the silencer is on the left side as comapred to Crusader which is on the right side.

Thankyou Anjan, Tuff Ryder, Steeroid and Stanher for mentioning the sagaa of the RE. I am not an expert on these but what i know is i do have a passion and liking towards the classic's

As far as i know first one in this light segment was Prince 1950's, Sherpa 1965 and begining of the 70's, Crusader 1972 and end of 80's, Mini Bullet 1980 and late 80's

I have a 1966 RE 350CC Military bullet also which is being restored at the moment in my absence

Keep up the good work guys !!

Rawath and TuffRyder thanks for the inputs. Yes I had forgotten to mention about the Prince that was in production after the Ensign and before the Sherpa.
Tuff Ryder- I think you are quite right when you say the Ensign had a 148 cc engine. it was lighter to look at.The Prince looked a bit more muscular and I am not sure whether it had the 148 cc or 175 cc engine? Let me verify this fact too.

Mods : Please move this to a suitable section if necessary.

I have a friend of mine who is interested to sell his bullet which is 1978 model and is parked in his garage since 2002. How much could I pay for it and what would be the condition of this bike sice its not started for the past 7 years. What would be the approximate costing for restoring this bike to a decent condition including painting. Your answers would be highly appreciated.
