re: Fiat 1100 Club - Bangalore [FCB]

Dear Rahul / Arun / Karthik / all Bangalore FCCC members - congratulations on the collection, you guys have some really great cars, well done.

I would like to comment on the car with the NISSAN engine, the car which was engineered but never produced. My comments on the engineering challenges that were faced during installation of the NISSAN A12 engine / F4W56A transmission on the FIAT 1100D platform are as follows. I am also giving some comments on the disc brake conversion / rack and pinion steering gear installation:

Engine / transmission adaptation:
1. The oil sump was re-engineered and retooled to make it flatter to suit the 1100D platform and achieve ground clearance same as 1100D. Fortunately the "north-south" (longitudinal) installation angle of 2.5 degrees was acceptable to NISSAN, otherwise the fuel level in the carburettor would not be to drawing specifications and the intake manifold would need to the redesigned.
2. As the engine mounting brackets moved from the pillars to the long members, the chassis was strengthened by increasing its section modulus in this area.
3. The front antiroll bar was redesigned, similar to the 137D diesel engined car.
3. The worm and sector steering gear was retained, with operating ratio of 20:1. However, the steering linkages were reoriented and relocated rearwards by 15mm, therefore the body sheet metal in this area was retooled. This change was commonized on production S1 RHD and LHD cars. This was to prevent interference of the steering linkage center pillar with the top boss of the NISSAN transmission bell housing. Garages who have conducted this conversion have conveniently cut this boss which is not correct as the transmission housing loses rigidity and flexes, leading to gear slippage issues. In the worst case, the housing can break.
4. The complete exhaust system from front to back was relocated to the LH side due to which the fuel and brake pipes were relocated to the RH side. The fuel tank was shifted to the right, therefore the fuel filler inlet system was completely redesigned with the inlet at the top left corner of the tank.
5. Mechanical fuel pump was fouling with the chassis pillar LH, therefore it was removed and the cylinder block hole was closed by a sheet metal plate which was common to the 137D diesel engine. Hence, there was no fuel pump on the engine. Electronic fuel pump with underfloor mounting was engineered with two fuel return lines with orifices to prevent fuel percolation and vapor lock. The body sheet metal was re-engineered to adapt these changes.
6. Battery was relocated to the RH side, battery cables were new.
7. Accelerator treadle of S1 was re-engineered to suit the Hitachi / Mikuni carburettor throttle ratios and opening angle of 82 degrees.
8. Clutch cable design was taken from the 118NE but boundary dimensions were converted to suit the 1100D application of floor mounted clutch pedal instead of dash panel mounted clutch pedal.
9. Engines were tested on the engine dynamometer, power was retained at 52 BHP @ 5600 rpm.
10. Production S1 transmission and axle ratios were used (3.757 / 2.169 / 1.404 / 1.000 / 3.9). 4.3:1 axle ratio was not considered from fuel efficiency point of view. Target fuel efficiency was 20 kmpl.
11. Only flloor shift gear cars were engineered for RHD application only.
10. UW (unladen weight) was 890kg / GVW (gross vehicle weight) was 1265kg / payload was 375kg with 155SR14 tires on 4J wheel rims with 22/28psi tire pressure.

Disc brake / rack and pinion steering system installation:
1. Disc brake needs vacuum booster to attain minimum operating efficiency. It also needs a change of caster angle to optimize wheel location. 1100D platform has floor mounted brake pedal installation which does not support booster. Caster angle is adjustable.
2. Rack and pinion steering system was tried but layout clearances under articulation in GVW condition was found critical, not meeting the minimum criteria of 20mm clearance. Also, turning angle optimization needed to be carried out with new ackerman.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Dear Rahul,

It was very nice of you to come forwards and introduce yourself. Now that you have seen the car, I am sure you will understand the natural pull for the car. I had promised Arun that on my way home from another event, I would drop in and hence this short stop.

Cheers

Rahul, thanks for the pics. (though I did hit the 'Thanks' button! )
The cars look awesome, especially the 1100s! MEV3434 deserves the original badges on- maybe the owner could try for a swap with that of the "M 24" Padmini or any other 'Delighted' Padmini!

Bangalore boys, here is a car not to miss out on

http://bangalore.olx.in/fiat-1100d-d...-iid-680122970

The car looks clean and fairly original, nice number, and more importantly, friendly price. If I'm not mistaken it has attended your rallies in the past?
