I value and respect you thoughts. This care was restored in my home basement except for the paint job and with a mechanic who has more than 38 years of Mercedes Benz restoration. I can PM you the number and details

Harshad, Congrats on such a fine restoration job. Kudos to you and your mechanic for your painstaking efforts.Do disclose more details about him on the forum as it'll be more beneficial this way. This beauty commands a separate thread where we'd love to know more about her restoration journey.

Cheers

Hi Kartik,

I thank you for your comments and respect your views. I was out of the Country and will post more pictures within a few days.

Its fellow Bhpian's like you who motivated me during the six months of full restoration.

Re: Mercedes benz 300d

Dear Friends,

I'm posting some more pics of my fully restored W 123 300 D 1983 model Labrador Blue car.

Time taken = 6 Months

Persons working on restoration = 2 ( Myself and an expert Mechanic) work done in my basement and fully stripped the car only while it went to a paint shop.

Major Work Done:
  • Old defective gearbox changed from a 5 speed to 4 speed.
  • Spare 4 speed automatic transmission is available with matching brake pedal and can swap with in one to tow hours. Did not use much as mileage was dropping.
  • All new Bilstien Shock Absorbers = four
  • Front and Rear Coil springs new
  • Front and Rear Cross Members changed and new ones replaced
  • Fan clutch new
  • Clutch and pressure plates new
  • Front Engine vibration control shock absorbers are new
  • All Rubber Flex Discs changed as well as Engine mounts.
  • New bumpers added
  • All wheel bearings changed as well as clutch release bearing from Schac's.
  • Rear Axles are new
In addition luck favored that there was minimal rust so it was corrected during a full tinkering and paint job.

Body:
  • Additional Left side mirror added.
  • Emblem and Hood Star are new and from Germany.
  • Chrome Fender Trim added.
  • Rear Tail light Chrome trim added.
Additional Spares purchased for long term:
  • Bosch Fuel Injection pump fully calibrated and one set of new nozzles.
  • Starter Motor reconditioned
  • Generator reconditioned
  • New A/c Nippon Denso Compressor
  • New Vaccum reservoir and new vaccum pump.
Of course the six months I have had days of joy, sometimes a let down feeling, and when she was finally completed, it was something that was truly my dream car.

I thank you all for your kind support.

As you can see in page 1 and its condition and compare the completely restored car.

She drives so gracefully, cannot make out if the engine is a petrol or diesel once the temperature reaches about 80 degrees F.

Hope the pics that I upload show up well as I am new to using Irfan View.

Please forgive any image distortion

With My Respects to all Team BHP members and moderators

Harshad

Hey Harshad!

Boy, am i drooling over these images or what! You really deserve a huge round of applause. My fave pics are the last one and the third before it. That newly procured emblem and hood-star are being shown off beautifully . While the wait must have been excruciating, your efforts have paid off and may you be rewarded with a sweet ride that never ever ends!

A quick query for you my friend! Isn't a four-speeder more of a step down from the five-speed gear-box? Is is that you couldn't source one or is there some other reason(s) to it? Also, in the second last pic, the gear shifter still shows the 5-speed shift pattern. Any plans on changing the same or have you gotten over the confusion.

Cheers

Hi There,
Thanks for your comments. Actually you must have started from page 1 as this was the start of the thread by its previous owner.

My thread starts from page 4 as a pick up to show the background of the W 123.

He had a Landmaster but was not selling it at that time.

Looks like there is an immaculate Landmaster in Pune with Dr. M.K Sangli, but I have no idea if he will sell.

Do a goggle search and you will find it.

Warm Regards

Harshad

Hi Car Love,

Thank you for your comments. Regarding the Landmaster is b3elonged to the person from whom I bought my W 123. I dont think he will sell it.

However, there is a Landmaster in Pune owned by Dr M.K.Sangli which is in showroom condition. I had seen this doing a goggle search sometime ago.

Look up and try a google search and if your lucky you may find it.

Warm Regards

Harshad

Thanks a lot Kartik, you have really taken some time and made the correct observations.

My reply is that as you can see in page 1 this car was already having a defective 5 speed gearbox.

I continued with the same thread from the previous owner so that anyone interested can see the evolution of the restoration.

My restoration thread starts from page 4.

When we opened it up the 5th Gear Cog was broken. ( I will post some pics later).

I checked with Mercedes Benz Germany while I was in Stuttgart in their technical support division and was advised that there were ONLY a few cars that were made having a Getrag 5 speed gearbox and it would be tough to get another one.

So I got myself a original 4 speed gearbox from Sharjah made by Mercedes Benz.

You are right about the stick shift, it is still the old stick shift and I have to change it to the new 4 speed one that will show the reverse gear, where you see the 5th gear marking.

I respect the detailed view that you have had.

With My Respects

Harshad

beautiful car buddy, IMHO loose the badges on the grill they are taking away from the beauty of the grill.

Any interior shots?

Re: Mercedes Benz W 123 300D Fully Restored

The car has been restored excellently, it is one of my favorite classics.
Was it tough to find original spares for the car?

I think the 300D had an option of a 5 speed gearbox and a 4 speed gearbox, so did you source the gearbox from another car?

I think the logos on the car spoil the classy looks, loose them.
