Here is one that clearly shows the badging on the Mercedes. The background looks eerily like Jantar Mantar Road in Delhi in the '60s (where the Kerala House is located). I was too young to remember, but the place looks way too familiar

This would be a 300S originally owned by Raja Rameshwar Rao of Wanaparti near Hyderabad. Much smaller than the President's convertible

In an attempt to start this car after many years of disuse they broke the camshaft. It's a very original example of a 300S though.

DKG.....the Wanaparti 300 is APY 10 which is in the picture below. It was in Indore at some time and last known to in Bangalore.

The Bhogilal 300 is not connected with Hyderabad as far as I know.

Re: Cars of Rashtrapathi Bhavan - wheels for a nascent Nation / Republic

As I mentioned earlier, some pictures of the 300 D

This was taken at the restorers at a stage where the works were almost complete.

The car is in Dubai and its still under Indian ownership and has been given a pride of place in his collection. Often exhibited with his other cars at various shows in UAE with the Indian historical heritage clearly shown in the display info. May be one day she would come back to India

HAPPY REPUBLIC DAY 2012 !!!

Yes, that very car. How did she land in Dubai? I think the vintage car export ban originally was meant for vehicles upto 1940.

Have you started digging? The Pranlal collection has an even better car, the 300SC from Sikkim.

Right, and the car is probably still in Indore. It is one of the earliest cars of this type known and had some mechanical issues.

The Presidential Mercedes 300 was sold in auction after the 600 for around 10 Lacs and bought by Mallya, as far as I remember. This happened around 1990, far back. What a lovely car

Cheers harit

The topic was of "cars of the Rashtrapathi bhavan", so I posted the car that I knew was connected to the Rashtrapathi Bhavan. It was neither Hyd connection as stated by DKG and I am aware of the 300SC sikkim as mentioned by Harit.

Cheers

Combining these posts and doing a bit of research, it seems that this Mercedes 300 was indeed from the fleet of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Apparently this car was often used by Nehru, must have been borrowing it from the President. The car was black before, sold to Lucknow from where Pranlal picked it up.
This was news to me.

Cheers harit

Re: Cars of Rashtrapathi Bhavan - wheels for a nascent Nation / Republic

Now this is a treat.

Manfred from Austria writes in, sharing 3 super pictures of a Tatra, probably from the Czech embassy, around 1960 he assumes. He wants to know the location.

Quote:
Dear Indian Vintage Car specialists,
I´m living in Austria/Europe and I have found some vintage photos showing a Tatra 603 in front of some locations in India. The photos were taken seemingly up/around 1960.
The car is a Tatra T603 Mk 1 and was used by the Czech Embassy, I presume.
I would like to get some informations about the location and perhaps the further history of this car. The barn-find karlosdeville have posted ( http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/vintag...ml#post1284163) is the same type and version, but the Czechs official cars were originally always black.
A personal question at that: why are no peoples at the empty places in the photos?
Keep them rolling, best regards from cold Europe in spring, Manfred

The first two pictures are definitely Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi - no people visible is just a coincidence

Can anyone identify the third? Could this be the same car now junking in Madras?

Tatra seems to be the flavour of the month! Wonder if this car ever visited the Army chief's office then!!

But, these pics are a treat indeed! Notice those bumper over-riders again? Might have been on a holiday, to explain the (relatively) empty streets. The third pic does not look like in Delhi to me.

The roads of this area used to be empty in 50's and 60's. Even traffic was allowed within the Parliament boundaries.

That seems to be Birla Mandir / Laxmi Narayan Temple near gole market and Rashtrapati Bhawan estate.

Cheers!
