@ Adheesh: The original is coroded and broken, and then with the work going on like that, its high posibility the a brand new one might not work. But still in a fix.

@ Karlos: yes we do need to weld the bumper mounting and radiator mounting brackets.

@ Arun: Thanks for the update, seems like he is going faster than he promised. An early RTS (Reaty to ship) date, my my never heard in all these years.

@ Ravi: Yes we need to cover the steering, we will do that by this weekend.

Why cover it ? The steering along with the gear linkages and steering box should be out of the car for a good paint job. We did discuss this earlier.

Cover in the sense for the time being (till the stuff is there on the body). since the tinker is 1/2 km away from the painter / machanic, we need steering and brakes to be on the body.

@ Sujit: I will be back to bangalore by friday night and saturday and sunday yes I will be there, but one monday a lot of official work and meeting to catch too . If I had would been my own boss I know what I would be doing, Building cars .

Ok, Friends time for update.

1st the body work. Went to tinker he was busy doing my work. the kind of work he is doing is the best possible I believe to there is always room for improvement. Have already given him some more things to do. Here are the pictures.

Now for the engine. I was our combined gut felling to open the engine, without even checking the compression, and in minutes my was ready with tools. And we were right considering the neglect that we saw with the body.

First came out the pressure and clutch plate. The lining is gone along with part of rivets.

Then the flywheel came out. The pully came out along with that the timing chain, which to our astonishment was assembled in opposite direction, the height of dumbness. Both cain and gear have worn. With all this we din't expected water pump to be working either, true.

Fuel pump, carb, oil pump and distributor to be checked and very likely all will be overhauled too.

Oil pan as can be seen is full of sludge.

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-dsc06645.jpg

Now was the case of head removal. the gasket itself was an aftermarket fabricated unit. The head is original but badly corroded. Valves will be checked later on.

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-dsc06646.jpg
MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-dsc06649.jpg

After this it was removal of big end bearing caps and pistons plus the two main bearing caps. the bearings are size 40 which is a bad sign, lets see if the crank cn be salveged or not (need calipers/ micrometers to check the reausibility)

The crank had sprauling marks on both the big end journals as well as on main journals. The lead tin overlay on the bearings has worn out, few bearing are badly pitted.

the pistons are size "B" i.e. second oversize. need to measure cylinder bore for further usability.

The connecting rods, the pistons, push rods, the cam shaft seems to be ok, but again checking on test bench will reveal their usability.

Below are the pictures, Thos who said not to open the engine have been proven wrong , at some point of time I was thinking on similar lines.

Tuesday is the day we have decided to carry out engine checks and the lathe works. Pawan kadam has a very good machinist with him and he will be our guy for the job.

MPR 4143 - Resto

Dear Manish,

You've done a very wise thing by opening up the engine which did look tired and need for overhauling. Please do not compromise anywhere in this area and I'm sure that you will perform a very professional resto now that the car is in good hands. Believe me, it will be a total peace of mind for the next 10-15 years once A-Z of the mechanicals are attended to at this stage. Please ensure proper engine detailing too before boxing back. I am excitedly watching this thread and with your experience and knowledge in this regard, I am pretty sure that the car will turn out to be of Concours standards.

All the BESHT.

I was wondering of your absense on this thread and then these words of appraisal, timed so perfectly well, as there is lot of work to do.

I will surely do a exact detailing of the engine compartment complete with color as they came in & decals for air & oil filter (I have gathered only minimal information in this regard, might be there were other decals too).

Almost all elusive parts are there with me barring few items, which I am looking for it.

Today arun gave me a pleasent gift "a key bunch" and on that the other key was original torino. I am blessed

It was a wise thing to open up the engine at this stage itself. You can look at the positive side that after the engine overhaul wherein nearly everything is going to be new, your car would have a fresh trouble free engine ready to rule the roads for another 50 years. Please post the side view of the cylinder head. It should probably be the 5 port head. Also, I can see the temperature thermistor in the cylinder head itself. These models too came with manifold heating pot system whose plumbing can easily salvaged from the later Padminis. The intake manifold may look identical to the later Padminis but 5 port heads had only 2 intake ports as compared to 4 on the later 7port heads. Hence the manifold wont be interchangeable with the Padmini.

Adheesh Parelkar

The cylinder head is indeed 7 port one. (The previous images did not load earlier.). I know of a '61 Select with a 5 port head, so somebody must have changed the cylinder head in your car at some point.

Adheesh

@ Sujith: Is it so, did you saw it?

@ Adheesh : It's a 7 port head as you have rightly mentioned, the intake manifold along with bottom half of the carburetor is of Premier padmani.

As for the the heated manifold, I am looking for one. the metal "T" and the ruber pipes I had bought approx 12 years ago when S1 parts were available, the pipes have detoriated due to non preservation .

As for the head lets continue with the present setup, paralley scout for the 5 port one.

Today had been a lovely day with a early morning doze of "Team-BHP", later spendind the day a scrapyard, got few links for original stuuf. Later part of the day was spend with the tinker. While at it, I opened the non functioning petrol tank cap to see what wrong and found the cast metal latch had broken. I will now make an exact fitting piece out of brass.

If the metal 'T' is fine, the rubber pipes are common with some TATA car as I had bought the pipe printed with TATA a year ago. The angle of the pipe is perfect for our use, however the length would need adjustment. So thats no longer a problem now.

All here's in total 29 pictures of original / repro parts. Each part pictured belongs to Fiat Select and none is of PP. None of the part is on offer .

Apart from the there is air box, window trims, side trims, wind shield rubber and trim, complete wiring original type and many other small small original stuff.

@ shiva: your 2 pull knobs and 2 wheel caps are included in the pictures.

@ Adheesh: I have put a picture of the metal "T", the problem would be to find the water heated manifold. I will post picture of manifold on tuesday evening.

Wow, great stuff. You are going about things the right way, the car should really turn out well.

A few points FYI
  • Your wheelcaps should be steel
  • The door handles should be aluminium (outer ones look steel to me)
  • Never seen Italian script on radiator cap - did it come from an 1100 or some other imported model? Either ways, wow!
  • Gear knobs are not original, but period and correct design. The original to your car should probably be similar to the black pear shaped one, but better finished
  • Fiat logo should have red inlays, not blue
  • Cabin lights are of later model, original have a rectangular lens
  • Pull knobs are great - I need a set in black and ivory if you chance upon
  • How do you distinguish the front indicator lens as original? The italian cars would have Carello/Altissimo/NL units (I have Altissimo on my 1961 Export), but it is unlikely that the Indian Selects would have Italian leses.
Good luck!
