Thanks, I went today and the car is done with primer. I have pictures but could not find the data cable to transfer pictures . The tinker will take the car on saturday.

@Arun: Can you give my steering wheel to the mechanic, when ever you are free and have time. Required for shifting the car to Tinkers place on saturday.

Makam anna, the car has landed at GT Tuners

Looks like Manish was very much impressed by my Millecento and topolino painting there( we used only the Paint Booth BTW) , he's gone and left his car without any of our knowledge.

Today had gone there to drop off one Car which my painter will be finishing next week, and suddenly i stumbled upon this.

Right now, the body filler job is done, and the surfacer being sprayed, they are waiting for Manish to confirm the final paint shade to finish the car.

I have never come across such a HEAVY Bonnet and Dickey ever in any Fiats so far !

Re: MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.

Pawan,

Thanks for the update. I had not been able to visit due to work. As you all can see that the tinkering and sanding of body work was done in no time. The surface is now preventing any new rust to form.

What actually remains is a lot of work. Works ot be done.

1.) All body inside (interior, engine bay, boot and under body) sand blasting + rubber coating (if not sand blasting then Rust bullet treatment).

(P.S.: In fact Monish is awiting my input on sand blasting. Guys please let me know of a sand blaster in peenya, who will do the sand blasting for my car. Need it urgently

2.) Correcting the rear leaf spring bracket mounting studs.

3.) Making of mounting for fuel tank.

4.) Making of fresh air intake hopper with butterfly valve.

5.) Welding of brackets for chassis in the floor pan.

6.) Making some panels near accelerator pedal. Replacing of inner wheel arch.

7.) Making of bumper and radiator mounts in the chassis. (Well my earlier mechanic has accidently sold off my old chassis ).

8.) Removing all the mechanicals and sand blasting + repainting as per original color scheme.

It is after this only probably we will be looking at painting the car.

Friends I need another help, what should be the color of the car. As per my family, the Green (Almond green, leaf green, british racing green etc. etc.) has now become too common and thus we need to have change of color. Please put in your suggestions.

Re: MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.

Just a small update, As a result of a Welcome gesture of Vipul Mathur of Fiat Club Bangalore, I now have the original seat covers for my car, these came off vipuls car, she now recieves new upholstrey.

The original covers are the exact shade that came on my car (towards grey shade) and are in awesome condition.

I am deeply indebted. Pictures over the weekend.

Re: MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.

Friends, long time no updates. This project has long been in the works but could not complete. Now I have got a good friend and a fellow team bhpian to do the restoration. More on that later.

First things first - the car has gone down further

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-current-condition.jpg

We have taken stock of this (more on that later). Let's first get to some original parts that I got -

1.) Electronic Points ( to replace originals) but keeping the exterior stock. Came from an online electronic store. good value and life time trouble free.

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-electronic-points.jpg

2.) Original Sepia wiper Switch, came from my home town shop

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-original-wiper-switch-.jpg

3.) Original toggle switches, came from Ranchi via a mechanic

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-originial-toggle-switches.jpg

4.) Owners Manual, costly but lucky to have found one (very rare now a days)

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-owners-book-1.jpg

5.) Original Boot Lock

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-boot-lock.jpg

6.) Magnetic Marelli original Ignition switch

*Thanks to team bhpian Pankaj for hand carrying these for me from US.

7.) Stroke of luck got me these 2 on auction (very rare to find them) (lucky I was the only one bidding)

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-roof-light-original.jpg

8.) Since the roof light lens were kaput, I re-cast them. Will need to make few more tough.

More updates soon.

Thanks. Yes there are updates. In fact a complete twist in the tale. Here are the updates -

1.) The body of the car has gone down further and would need serious mending to being her back.

2.) There were many components missing (from moving shops).

3.) To cost to get things right in a right way is much higher.

4.) The time frame required to mend the stuff was still far away.

These factors put a deterrent on me to go ahead, there were further delays in starting the full fledged work on the car.

All these factors were pointing in one direction of having a donor car. A car that needed no work body wise, was a runner and would need little mending to get back to originality.

Here comes Karlos, he pointed out to me a beautiful example (1958 one) which was in the right price point and was a runner. First I had kept the lead aside and was concentrating on my own car. But the reality was pretty much evident about the daunting task at hand. It would need a donor car. This made financial sense as well

And to our luck the car was still available. So on a fine Friday Morning (Saturday being regarded as non-auspicious for buying iron) in start of September we set about on our journey to a small town near Erode - Anthiyur to see and buy the beauty.

Over there I found out that -

1.) The registration number - is very unique and of old series.

2.) The car is a very rare Millecento - as collaborated by our Fiatpedia Karlos.

3.) The car still retains it's orginal RC book and was bought and owned by the Famous actress from Madras - G Shakuntala under hypothetical.

And then the car has all the original bits or parts that were missing in my MPR 4142.

This then was the right decision to make. Only to find out that the FC of the car is yet to be done and that the car is hastily put together for selling. The good thing body is all rust free meaning I will not have to deal any more with the sheet metal guys.

Here is the car in action -

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-action1.jpg

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-action2.jpg

Some interior pictures -

The engine bay - look at the airfilter

The oil filler cap says premier (must be a later change).

A deal was struck and the following Sunday the car arrived on a truck.

Re: MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.

Continuing further -

The registration book still retains the old information (what a nice thing to have)

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-rc-book.jpg

Now with the car in safe custody, the big task remaining is to get the car registered in my name at Hosur and I seek help from members in this regard. Do any one has contact to get this done.

Moving ahead found that the car has original seat cover on the rear seat -

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-original-seat-covers.jpg

The front seat is non original tough.

Between my 2 cars there are now lots of good stuff and largely my new car will become original. There are few bits and stuff still remaining of which I have a list and am on it.

Meanwhile some more progress -

The horn button is refurbished

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-horn-button.jpg

The original water pump pulley

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-water-pump-pulley.jpg

The original rubber gasket for park lights (I have similar for tail lamps as well). These will be reproduced as well, waiting for raw materials.

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-original-rubber.jpg

The original Sipea flasher units

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-flasher-unit.jpg

Now comes the task of mechanically sorting out the car. Recently my ex colleague has returned back from Canada and has build up his hobby work space at ground floor of his house. This is fully furnished with TIG welding, 2 post lift and a mini lathe to name a few. Having this facility available I dropped my old car at his place.

A look at his place -

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-friends-place.jpg

We started to work on the car and quickly dismantled the remaining bits on the old car. Plan is to use which ever is good from the 2 cars, refurbish and fit back.

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-taking-out-engine.jpg

MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.-dismantled-parts.jpg

More updates as and when we work. Also on a side note I have 5 numbers of 5.20-14 tyres that I had purchased new some time back. I also have the white wall seat inserts to go on these.
