Restoring A Series 2a 1969 8' Land Rover

hi guys just picked up this Landy as stated, from chandigarh i think some one else on this site was discouraged from buying it for its original petrol motor had been replaced by a land rover diesel (turns out its a 1968 model). any way i drove it home and started the re build. basically starting afresh, bringing everything back to stock but over all is in good condition. The vehicle is lacking several details, so here our pics i had posted on the 4X4 site but am shifting here as it makes more sense here. the pics are chronologically placed and spk for themselves, pics of first two days work

Firstly congratulations on for your new project.

The works seems to be going on in full swing on this car. What are the jobs you are planning to do on it?Is it just going to be a basic re-build or are you going to rebuild it with the original petrol engine in it?Please update as and when work progresses.

hey thanx guys for all the encouragement!! well iam going to keep the diesel after some tuning up (dont have the patience and moolah to find a petrol one apart from it giving 3-5 Km to the litre), the tappet heads are pitted and dont sit properly, two of the injectors are clogged, the timing is out, the rear and front wheels are off kilter, the air filter has been moved to port after banging a hole into the foot well (ghastly!!), a contessa fuel pump has been fitted on the wall and the fuel filter has been placed where the air filter was!! chaos!! but it will all come back.

Colour ?? i want classic british racing green/bentley green with lime stone roof and hubs, son wants deep blue and white roof. heres shots of the chassis being washed and pulling paint off the galvanised portions and cappings.

iam also working on getting the instrument cluster to work and am painting out the scratches, the springs have been removed and will be painted and greased, while the shocks are being re filled. i like the clean gear box just needs a thin layer of paint now on it.Can any body give me the length of the 4 wheel drive and transfer ratio gear sticks, ill have to fabricate them , mine are missing !!fortunately the half shaft is available.

i am very excited and waiting for the outcome.

and yeah the mechanic seems very dedicated.

PS: Painter should be very skilled, as painting aluminum is a all together different story.

I look forward to this rebuild. If you get to Chandigarh a bit then there was a LR sat next door to the petrol pump owned by Yuvraj Singh's dad a while back. Not been back for a while so don't know if it is still there.

If you get stuck for any parts then John Craddock Ltd - Specialists in Land Rover Parts and Spares and Paddock Spares - Land Rover, Range Rover Parts & Accessories - Discovery, Defender and Freelander are the places to look.

thanx bro, . heres some more pics of cleaning up some welding we needed to do on the chassis, and the layers of metal paste on the side panels laid over by the PO and then we cleaned the road springs checked their camber, repainted and re greased them before re packing them.!! guess what the bushes are shot, and so far we cant find any replacements thatll do the job, any thing with a lesser bore will ruin the ride and wont last a day off road. guess we ll have to machine some new brass ones. then found one of the rear brake pistons leaking, fixed that and opened up the engine, seems to be ok so far!!

Aaah. A really nice restoration thread in the making.

My friend!, why cant you source the original petrol engine? Thats where all the Charm lies.

One more advantage with Landys are, easy to Tinker and 0% rust on the body, since almost all body part apart from chassis is Aluminium.

Its your car to sum it up, Do as your Heart and also as your Pocket says

Glued to this thread.

And Best of Luck.

On the contrary the Landy with its aluminium panels is a nightmare to tinker as it is difficult to work with aluminium without stretching it.

There might be no rust issies but if the body has dents its a very hard job to get them out properly.

Also the original petrol engine for this might not be easily available in India and with teh current import laws its equally difficult to source form outside the country.

Its a good idea to go with the Diesel as the car can be used much more due to the price of Diesel. Also since its an origimal LR Diesel it makes more sense to retain it

Congratulations on this project, all the best.

An uncle of mine has used these Landys extensively being in the army, and he pointed out something unique to me - most models (including this) featured a thin sheet/panel mounted above the roof - with a gap of an inch or so in between. This apparently kept the insides well insulated from heat as a thin plane of wind would continuously pass through this gap.
