Recently I bought an Ambassador Mark II 1970. I plan to restore it back to as much original condition as is practically possible for me. The idea to have a car which is fairly original to the ones which were in use way back in 1970.

The car has the original petrol engine which needs to be reconditioned so that it works smooth and fine. The work that I intend to do on the car over the next few months is :

- Full body repairs
- New paint job. Color will black.
- Chroming job for the door handles, bumpers, grille etc
- New tyres
- New wiring and electricals
- New metal panel to house the instruments
- Try and get the original grille, headlight rings, rear amby logo of Mark II model

I welcome your comments, views and advice on this project on mine.

Am posting a couple of photos of the car in the condition I bought it.

The body repair work has been started and have posted the initial photos taken after removing the various fittings.

the interiors look ok but the exterior is where the trouble is. nevertheless best of luck with the restoration.

Wow, nice project - Don't "try" to get the original fittings, you MUST get the original grille et al.
IMHO the mark II has the nicest grille in the entire Amby family !!

Hi jeepster09,

Congrats on your new accquisition!

The car looks very much restorable and the fact that HM still has a good volume of Amby's selling around, spares (in my opinion) should not a be a problem.

My gutt feeling says that this car is going to come out clean, just like a new one! All the best for the project!

Have you finalized on black or you might thnik about the color again? IMO, the color which the acr originally has looks good. Well, as everyone knows, beauty is subjective, just wanted to share my opinion! :)

Hey nice car and lucky its not desilised. How about the two tone colour i.e., the different colour strip on the side which drops at the end of the back door with a chrome beeding on either side. Browsed a lot but didint find the pic. Its famous in those days I am not sure if it had come from the factory that way. You should not be finding any problem finding parts I can also help you sourcing here in HYD.

Congrats Jeepster for wanting to keep the Ambi alive. Not a long time ago, they would have been scrapped for sure.

Chor Bazaar is the place you could probably source an original Mk-II grille and other stuff. While there, get an original Jalwa horn and paint it bright post office red. The rear light lens cups are still available at Opera House im sure. I might have the original gear lever knob, i hope ive not already given it to someone. If i manage to find it, its yours. Not anything substantial but lets start in this way. I might also have the original round interior light. Will have to see to be sure.

Good to see that in the Mk-IV conversion, the wiper arms are left in the way they should be.

What colour are you thinking of? Not too many colors were available as an option in those days.

For me it would be the Mk-I grille anyday with those cute little square parking lights.

Too late Gogs and Jeepster.:D

But Opera House and chor bazaar is the way to go, most things will be available with a little effort in hunting around.

V-16, Obsessedbyfiat,Chanu,

Thanks for your comments. The colour will be black I guess, black was the color, most of the cars including this one had those days.

Also I think once the project is completed, the gleaming black colour with the shining chrome, will help add to the old world looks of the car.

Superselect,

Point noted. Have started efforts to get these things.

Will post the photos of the parts I have removed from the car so that you all can help me identify the original ones.

Sanat

Hey Sanat,
Chor bazaar is a good place to start hunting, you should find lots and lots of Mk II stuff there.
All the best !

I know for sure the rear light covers (with two holes) are available. It would be difficult to source the lens though

Dear Amit,

I had faced problems with the painting guy refusing to turn scrape the paint off the car. A new fellow is has started the scraping work which should be done in a few days time.

Will post the photos soon.

Regards,
Sanat

The work of paint scrapping has finally started. Some photos.

Jeepster,

Sorry to butt in on this thread, but I was looking for some info on the Mark II, as a friend might be doing a complete restoration of his '66 Mark II soon.

Could anyone tell me whether the body shells had any variations from the Mark II to the IV and the others? We might just have to procure a new shell as this car has all but sunk into her grave!! Body is probably like an eggshell by now.

Will keep glued to this thread for guidelines on the resto. Good luck with it!

Cheers
Rahul
