Its a 2.5 engine , AFAIK it came mostly in the 550 & later models . Commander & 540 had the XDP 4.90 ( 2112 cc ) engine , You can find as many details in the 4x4 section of the Forum

KMT 90 GB How many gears??? I would like to use the GB that comes with 5 plus reverse.
KMT 90 has 4 forward & 1 reverse gear , its a Rugged & easy to repair GB ,you dont need a 5 forward GB for a vehicle like LWB Landy

And would the final drive gears in the land Rover differentials suit/be correct for the GB?Transfer case??
Difficult Question
Land Rovers (old ) were mostly 4.7 : 1 , the same engine GB configuration had these ratios with 6 x 16 & 7.00 x 16 & 7.50 x 16 tyres , Now you can assume that the engine can cope with variety of ratios ,but its a LR engine .

I have and would like to retain both the original differentials and mate them up with an engine of sufficient capacity
.

Good Idea ,Try it out with MM Engine & GB first

. I have sufficient experience of repairing and restoring to original specs but very little experience on such modifications.
God Bless - may gods shower you with lots of patience

What is your [and other gurus, as far as I am concerned anybody who knows something I do not IS a guru to me!!] take on the DI engines from MM??? and do they fit with the above mentioned GB??
they will fit & run but wont come cheap

I will advice you to closely observe the Land Rover specifications about Engine torque figures , gear ratios ,axle ratios & tyre sizes , that will provide you some insight before you go in any modifications

Hi Collector,

You know that the body of the Landrover is made of Aluminium and doesn't rust at all. So someone with arusty Gypsy would have thought to transplant the body of the LR. So he will have a mechanically sound vehicle with a body that will not rust
My Logic

Best Regards & Drive/Ride Safe

Thanks Waseem, I sent a pm.
Absolutely, hard top and soft are easily interchangeable. Only few bolts and nuts and everything is with the car. Actually LR never made factory built 5 doors series or defenders for that matter with a soft top. This is a unique conversion can give the benefit of enjoying good weather and scenery in a LEB 5 doors Land. A must!

Oh yes rubber gaskets, they are there! However who has ever seen a water proof Series?!?

Ref. 5 doors soft top, I'm pretty sure about but I could be mistaking. SV department might have done some one off...

Re: Land Rover support group!

Hi, Could anybody please recommend a person/place in India or the UK from whom/where I can source some suspension spares (eg bushes, shockers, tie-rod ends etc) for my 1984 Range Rover Classic? I changed those about 12 years agao and its time for another change now. Many thanks, Sarojesh

Re: Land Rover support group!

Hi All,

Have been following this thread keenly... and off late I was able to pick a Land Rover Series III 1973 model.

It is currently running on a Isuzu 2.4D with a 4 speed gearbox. I am interested in restoring the car here in Chandigarh and would need the Guru's advice on the following:

I am pondering over a couple of options the first one is to fit an original Diesel 2.25L Engine along with the gearbox, which came standard with this car. Any idea from where I would be able to source it from?

The second option is to source a 200tdi or a 300tdi engine again I am not sure from where I can get it. I understand the import route for second hand spares is not a possibility. Was wondering if it can be sourced from India.

The third option is to put in a suitable engine which is easily available in India, For this I would like to know which engine and gearbox is best suited for the Landie. I understand this option is not my priority as I am more interested in sourcing originals but this would be my last resort.

I look forward to hearing your expert comments.

Regards,

Gobind
