About the missing star, its a nut that used to fasten the bolt of the black rexine bag accessory, which was so common and fitted below the handlebar. It was much like the metal helmet box of Bajaj scooters.

Thanks Dr. anjan. Yes, I knew that. There were 2 such nuts; one on the left is missing, hence I need atleast one, as I dont want to get that hole closed now, it resulting in having to do some welding/tinkering, which will mess up the paintwork. So finding a similar nut to close the hole would be best option. So someone do help me get one of these please:

Shyam, I think you need to be awarded the MA(Master in Automobiles) Degree right away!;)

Haha! Thanks arun! I wish there were such a degree, would've atleast been useful to me in some way if not my actual MA! ;)

Wow Shyam!! This is a super scoot you have got!:thumbs up

Congrats buddy.

Thanks sujith!

I see its alright to have the scooter as it is if still required a rubbing or a single coat should make it neat. Shyam if please remove the after marked metal rusted beading on the front panels and I guess you need to put rubber ones similar to Lamby. How about the front break lever.

Regarding the star shaped nut if you dont find one then either you can mould one similar or remove the other one and put the chrome ones which comes for vespa/cheatak rexine bag holder. I can also get it for you next time we meet.

One best thing you have done is using WD40, give her a nice wash and then check all the cables and give oil bath. check all electricals, what size of tyre should fit on to her, i see its an autorickshaw tyre fixed now. Try for White walls or as of now you can go for cheatak tyres if they are suitable and most important don't take out the scooter outside the township.

Thanks bala! Yes, I do plan to get a rubbing done, maybe a single coat on the mudguard and touch-up on the floorboard at the most.
The beadings do look aftermarket to me, but not sure if I should remove them.
They might leave marks on the edges. Let's give it a try nevertheless. They however, do add to the patina look in any case! ;)
LD never came with rubber legshield beadings. There were stainless steel accessory ones available though, which I intend to put at a later stage when I fully do up the scooter.

Oh great, thanks! But do you still get the star-shaped ones?

Yup those are autorickshaw tyres. Size 4.00*8.
They seem good enough as of now. So will let them be.
Scoot's not parked in my township though, but at a shed very close to the township.

More later. 'hope I hear from the mechanic today!

Hi all,

More cleaning done this morning. Did a kerosene wash (only externally) of the engine/gearbox casing, part of the silencer (couldnt reach the muffler!) and the front forks. One reason why I did this was so it would enable me to study the engine/mechanical parts in more detail and get familiar with them.

Then gave the whole scoot a wash, again only from the outside. I forgot to bring the metal polish with me, so couldnt apply it on the paint! Next time I guess...!

But scoot's turning out better and better each time!

Noticed this for the first time on the rear tyre: "SPEED DELIVERY"...what's that supposed to mean??! lol:

Or is this marked only for auto-rickshaws, this being a 3-wheeler tyre?

'also finally atleast managed to get the contact no. of the mechanic I was expecting. 'just spoke to him. He agreed to take a look at the engine the coming week.

BTW, just noticed that the front wheel is crooked!! :Shockked:

I dont know how/when it could've happened! Would I have to get the fork aligned?? In any case, I guess I can get it done only after the scoot's running!

No ma I don't think so, the star shaped nuts were never available for scooter as far as i know. They were made for Autos and especiall they used to come for lorrys next to Ashok Leyland monogram and for other brands as they were locally made. Even we can have moulded for your scooter but I feel the ones with chrome oval buttons should give a good look.

They are absolutely autorickshaw tyres I am not sure how the drive would be with them as they are flat surfaced did you dive the scooter anytime or once you do it you can let us know the experience.

Hope your mech proves to be a expert and help you in future plans for this scooter.

Thanks bala, but I would like to have the star-shaped ones, for a rather special reason! :)
If they were made for autos, we could still get them?

Nope, never driven any LD before! I sure am looking forward to! :)

@shyam. that is great scooter. I remember going around on my grand fathers scooter.
It was brought down to pieces in an accident. Point of no return.

Regarding the front wheel being crooked,
I guess its a faulty wheel bearing caused due to a broken / missing wheel collar.

Hopefully not the fork.

Nice to see another LD hitting the roads.
These vehicles excite me more than the new vehicle launches.

Very nice, love these scooters all my school life my uncle use to drop me on this one of these !!! I have 2 of them (not LDs) with me,but both need restoration, cheers all the best

Hi all,

Sorry for the sleepy silence in this thread, but it looks like it will be kicking with full compression again now! But most of all, glad to be able to revert with some positive news for a change!

After making numerous attempts over the last couple of months for a good mechanic to get the scooter started, I finally found one, whom I incidentally happened to know since long although was earlier under the impression that he is only a denter!
This guy also normally remains preoccupied, as he is quite popular with many of the local vintage bike owners and getting his time is very challenging, believe it or not! But I somehow mangaed to coax him into taking a look at my scooter, being confident that it was definitely mechanically sound and only needed a bit of cleaning-up to be up and running again. During this time, some slight denting work on the front mudguard etc. would also be carried out there.

So over the weekend, I had the scooter transported to his workshop in secunderabad, and he began working on it yesterday.

First of all, the petrol tank, which had long gone dry and rusty from the inside (as seen in pic., albeit not too clear), was taken out to be acid-cleaned from the inside.
Then came off the carb. There were a few issues uncovered here, namely that the the carb barrel had cracks all around, maybe due to rough handling earlier. It was 'fixed' by fitting of copper sleeves on the inside, as can be seen! Worse still, I knew the choke knob was missing, but turned out the entire choke unit was gone, and the cavity in the carb where it was connected had a cloth stuffed in it! :Shockked:
Air-filter element (looks like something used in the old kerosene stoves though!) too looked dry and frail.
I do have another LD carb that I recently bought on ebay, it is to arrive shortly. Alebit it's of an earlier model but would fit any LD.
So initial plan was to temporarily fit a Li Lambretta carb to start the engine, but didnt work out because it wouldnt fit in the space. However, it turned out that the choke unit, including the cable, could fit on the LD carb. So the alternative plan is to arrange it thus until I could afford to buy the original choke unit, including the original knob that is missing on my scooter.
Absence of the choke would lead to a too-rich mixture, with oil residue coming out the silencer. The mech. temporarily fitted a choke assembly from a Li carb that he had.

Petrol tank was cleaned and ready today, see the difference on the inside! Then oil was poured to 'wet' the tank from inside, to prevent rust from setting in again with the tank being dry. It was then refitted.

Carb too was thoroughly cleaned and reassembled.

A new 'bullet' fuel pipe was fitted, again temporarily. The fresh petrol was filled in a 'test' tank owned by the mech. that was connected to the carb, only for this time while starting the scoot.

The spark plug was found ok, current supply ok, and surprisingly it didnt take too many kicks before the little old engine fired to life!!! clap:

The whole place was engulfed in the thick smoke but I was too happy to see that for obvious reasons! Nor was I disturbed on being told that the silencer had carbon deposit all over inside and needed de-carbing.
I honestly cant express here the joy (and relief!) I felt at that moment! All the more relieved when the mech. gave his verdict that the engine seemed normal. Another gentleman who was around and helped all along also checked the clutch plates by engaging the scooter in gear, and concluded that they were normal too, as they are known to stick to one-another when not in use, and would be identified by the scooter rushing forward uncontrollably as and when put in gear, which thankfully didnt happen!

Next would be to get the scooter running after the carb's fixed and do a test-run on it, and check the gears etc......do watch this space!

(Note: Many pics. this time, so takes more time to download!)

FCCH meet is for Fiats only.
Other miscellaneous vehicles will not fit the bill here and may mislead too.
