:OT The Prince motorcycle had a two stroke 173cc Villiers engine while its earlier model, the Ensign had a 150cc Villiers. The Prince was rechristened as Sherpa sometime in the mid 1960's. Again it was redesigned and rechristened Crusader after a restyling job in 1973.The Enfield 200 (mini Bullet) replaced the Crusader in 1980. Even the Fantabulus shared the same 175 cc Villiers engine.(the Wikipedia link wrongly mentions it as a 150cc engine). Needless to say these smaller siblings shared many parts from the Bullet bin. All these bikes viz. Prince, Sherpa, Crusader and Enfield 200 were made in India and the bikes competed with the Jawa and the Rajdoot but never sold well. In fact the Crusader and the Enfield 200 had been indigenously designed. The Zundapp collaboration saw two launches the Fury and the Silver Plus in 1984. But Enfield had bad luck in the sub 350 cc range since the early 1960's.:FrustratiAll bikes, mopeds and the only scooter never sold well. The Ensign - a 150 cc bike was popular and sold well till it was discontinued in the early 1960's.It virtually had no competitor.Thats because Jawa and Rajdoot were yet to storm the Indian market. They were in by 1963-64. |
