ohh yeah it still grinds. i have to shift gears like they do in those lorries. shift to neutral wait for 2 seconds and then shift to next gear. only up shifting or down shifting to third is a ritual, other gears seem to be alright. the real problem arises while overtaking a slow vehicle and shifting in the middle of it.

Re: Help Needed With W123 240d

Hi Guys, needed a help from you Mercedes experts. I am planning buy a 1981 W123 240d Automatic. Wanted your inputs on a few things-
1 Can the car be used as a daily commute vehicle?
2 How tough is to maintain it?
3 How is the reliability post 155k kms?
4 Is it possible for a layman enthusiast really enjoy driving it daily without paying a bomb to keep it?

I know the 1st and 4th question are similar. But I hope to get answer which would help me realise my dream.

Regards
Musclecar

Answer is yes to all. The W123 is like a cockroach. It will survive anything except rust. I saw so many in Morocco still being used as taxi's. You will need to ensure it is maintained properly and budget for stocking on parts as and when they wear out!

Do look at front wings carefully and under rear window, as also the undercarriage. Same engine and matador f305 and tempo traveller so parts are easy

Just saw the car and it was in a bad state, the car was badly repainted, the transmission had jerks, the steering was wobbly, the doors didn't shut properly. It reqired a lot of work. So letting it go for now.
But got to know about other Merc- 1992 190d.
Is it worth having a look??
