Ram,

The 'Bhatsuars' were very much in active service at Kalyan and I remember seeing them around 1998-2000 there. There were a lot of them being used as taxis between Kalyan station and Shahad-Ulhasnagar routes.

I also remember seeing a lot of variation in the body styles and the age of the vehicles. While half of them seemed to be very old ones, there were quite a few ones which were relatively newer ones.

I particularly recollect them as I had seen them being used as goods tempos in Bombay during my childhood days then but never as the passenger vehicles seen in Kalyan. These seem to have been replaced by the Minidors later and now by the tempo trax muvs.

Your post on the Scammel Scarab Articulated Refuse Transporter with the illustrated line drawing was very interesting and was a new thing for me.

Regards,

Interesting jagadeesh. That's around the Egmore area right?
Might it have been captured in some Tamil movie too?
Can you get hold of an old photograph ?

Re: Bombay's Scammel Scarab Articulated Refuse Transporter

A few weeks back while moving through the Jabalpur bypass, I could sight some of these "Suars" still hale and hearty, alive and kicking and moving with loads of passengers.
These are from the early 1980's or so going by their registration numbers. These are not seen within the city limits however!

Re: Bombay's Scammel Scarab Articulated Refuse Transporter

The 'Bhatsuars' were quite common in some places in Rajasthan, I remember from my childhood days there.

And here is one used in a Tamil movie that I posted earlier, its supposed to be in Bombay:

Re: Bombay's Scammel Scarab Articulated Refuse Transporter

Quite unintentionally, this thread is mixing up
the British Scammell Scarab articulated dust cart, which has become very rare (possibly extinct in India)

with

the much more familiar and common Bajaj-Tempo Hanseat (Bhatsuar:भटसुअर) passenger and goods carriers.

On the one hand, the Scammell Scarab had a water-cooled 4-cyl. flathead 2,090 cc petrol engine mounted in the steel ladder chassis behind the driver's cabin. Make no mistake, this engine was powerful like that in the military Willys MB Jeep.
Its radiator was in the rear wall of the driver's cabin. The radiator grille was in the right hand side wall of the driver’s cabin.
Designed to haul a 6 ton load, the 3-wheel Scarab tractor's final drive was via a conventional propeller-shaft to a differential on the rear-wheels. The brakes were linked to a vacuum proportioning servo to apply correct braking to the garbage trailer.
Highly maneuverable, the front wheel could be steered enough to make the tractor pivot with either rear wheel stationary.

On the other hand, The Bajaj-Tempo Hanseat had a Heinkel 2-cyl. 2-stroke 400 cc, 12-14 bhp petrol engine, (and later a Greaves-Lombardini 1-cyl. 500 cc 9 bhp diesel engine). Its small radiator was in the front behind the radiator grille. This little engine sat on the front suspension. Final drive was via a motorcycle-type gearbox and chain drive to the single front wheel.

Other than that, both were three-wheelers, there's no further similarity between the two three-wheelers.

Re: Bombay's Scammel Scarab Articulated Refuse Transporter

Great thread

I remember seeing these Scammels here in the UK as a little boy growing up in the 1970s.

I remember the flat-bed variants towing trailers behind them full of luggage and freight at railways and airports.

Regards
Ed

I remember, as a child ( 22 yrs ago) ,when our Big Joing family split, we moved out and shifted all our stuff, including me, my Mom,and Dad shifted in the same Bajaj Tempo.

I was so much besotted by this vehicle, i still long to get hold of one , but sadly there are NONE in the city..

A great and rare find !! The initial drawing almost matches the actual image. The color is also correct.
