Re: Restoration of a 1934 Plymouth PE

Good Evening Everybody ,

The PE started by pushing , the push lasted for 30 meters and the engine fired - it ran ... and ran - sweet music to our ears - to me it was whisper loud without the silencer . 10 liters of petrol for the running in lasted for 5 hours - I think this one is a winner.

Photographs of the initial running in are attached:

Re: Restoration of a 1934 Plymouth PE

Stumbled on some more photographs of the Plymouth engine period ( I have to improve upon my computer filing skills.

Working on the piston sizes, that is my friend & mentor in things mechanical Akhilesh Agarwal on the left and I :
People in the photograph make it more memorable.

The calculations which emerged - we started with the rings , designed and made the pistons locally , honed the cylinders to suit the size of the pistons.
(I only have a pdf file for the calculations)

1934 Ply Pistons.pdf

Thats Akhilesh Agarwal , my brother ( Perak on the forum ) and I discussing things vintage , with the Plymouth in the background. Must say the ambience of the clutter, scrap, parts and tools is suited to our type of restoration.

Re: Restoration of a 1934 Plymouth PE

G'day Chauhan,
A friend of mine in America gave me the link to your restoration and I am very impressed at the mechanical knowledge you have.
I'm restoring a 1934 Dodge in Australia that was exported from America.
I've finished all the mechanicals, the car has been painted and am now working inside the car.
If I can help with photos in any way I'd be more than happy to offer assistance. Its a pity we don't live closer as I have a crankshaft, pistons etc from my original 34 Dodge motor but my block was too far gone so the parts are just sitting there !
Anyhow looking forward to more photos. I'll try and post one of my car.
Cheers

Ian

Re: Restoration of a 1934 Plymouth PE

Thats seems to be a very tedious restoration indeed. Curious to know what state is it in now.

Please update on the latest for all of us to appreciate the efforts gone into it.

Re: Restoration of a 1934 Plymouth PE

Hello and many thanks for the interest in my project.
I bought my car about 14 years ago and have been slowly restoring it since.
I'll add some shots of when I first got her and what I'm doing now.
I'm working on the window frames, Front floor timber, wiring, rear tail lights, cowl vent, ash tray and glove box at the moment.
I was trying to have it finished in October for the motorclassica here in Melbourne Australia but I don't think time and money will allow.
If you google " 1934 Dodge Engine " you should be able to see my engine running for the first time.
I hope you find the pictures interesting.
Kindest Regards
Ian

Ian - The pics are quite interesting, but is that the condition of the car as on date? Still in pieces or out assembled and awaiting final moments?

The car is come out really good. I must stay stunning, loved the way the wheels are painted. Any plans for white walled tires?

Thankyou for your compliments.
The car is basically as you see it.
All mechanicals are complete. A lot of parts are finished awaiting reassemble.
It took 3 hours just to get the ashtray mechanism in place after I cleaned, primed and painted it so it takes a while to get things done.

I will be getting Whitewall tyres but expensive at $420 each and I have 6 oth them. My car has a spare wheel in each mudguard so this is why thing take a while.

Its easy to bolt a mudguard in place but not so to fit a lever that opens the cowl vent when it breaks and takes 3 hours to figure out what to do.

Also the car was completely disassembled when I bought it. The previous owner spent 5 year pulling it apart and then it sat in his garage for 20 years. Not pulling something apart makes it very difficult to reassemble as often I'm not sure where things go and have to contact restorers in America to get information from them.

I must say that it is interesting and I get to correspond with all sorts of people across the world.

Hopeing you are finding this interesting

Ian

Here is a picture of two of my friends cars.
They are both 1934 Dodges.
Their bodies were made in Australia where mine was made in America ( no wood was used in the bodywork on my car )

Best Regards
Ian

Re: Restoration of a 1934 Plymouth PE

Hello Ian,

Wonderful to see the photographs of the 34 Dodge, excellent work. The '34 Plymouth with me was taken up as a mechanical challenge, I was able to get the car back on road.....since then I have been stuck with the upholstery. To keep things moving I started work on a 1947 Packard Clipper and again work is stalled at the upholstery stage . I have a Mercedes W111 which is also waiting for rubber and upholstery presently restoring a 1928 model A , will update with photographs tomorrow morning.

Regards,
Chauhan.

Hello Chauhan,
Thought I'd share a few more photos. With the help of my brother I was able to get the bonnet on the car on the weekend. Hope your projects are progressing well.

Dear Ian,

I just love the way you are going about your project . In India we do not have the patience to detail the project as much as you all do. Information and availability of spares is limited in India and lastly, professional restoration of vintage cars is limited to some cities.

I would request you to post some detail pictures as you work on the roof. Guess you will have the outer surface with some water proof material, middle will be mesh and cotton wool and what material will use in the inside?

Cheers
