Vintage Cars from Awadh

Attached is a picture of three cars. It was taken in Gonda district, East-Central Uttar Pradesh in the mid-1930s, and is the only one still available. The owners were the Pandey family, one of the principal taluqdars of Gonda, and the estate was known as the Singha, Chanda & Ramnagar Raj.

The family's cars reportedly included a Rolls and a Hispano. The cars appear to be parked in front of their garages, which must have been stables for the horses and carriages which preceded them. It would be interesting to know which cars these are, particularly the one on the extreme right. Unfortunately, neither a better picture, nor any additional details about the cars are available. The son of the chaffeur of the Rolls has a pan shop between the rear of the parking and the main bazar in Khan Market, New Delhi. The clock of the Rolls (Smiths) is still with the family.

Thank you for sharing the lovely photograph and history. The car in the centre is almost certainly a Buick of the mid 30s, the car to the left maybe a Dodge/Plymouth of the same era. No clue on the car in the foreground though.

This Lancia DiLambda now in Bombay is reportedly ex Gonda

The car on the right (foreground) is possibly a 1928 Buick.

I agree with Travancore; the car in the foreground is very likely a 1928 Buick, most likely with a straight 6 motor. The grill surround shape is just like those on a 1928. If it is a Buick, there's an identical car in Kolkata under private restoration.

Nice to see a period picture of the Lancia clearly showing the wire spoke wheels.

This should put the controvercy over the metal rims vs spoke rims to rest finally

Motorbike style wire wheels in my opinion , do not do justice to the car.

I recently saw a similar Viotti bodied dilambda, formerly owned by the Mysore Maharaja completely original with correct wheels, looked very pleasing.

A request to the owner , get the correct wheels made by sending the hubs to the UK.
