Re: Restoration: 1930 Ford Model A Phaeton

We have made more progress on the car , I am not happy with the way the hood is fitting, so it has been removed today for some minor changes.

Some last minute shopping was done , and we are awaiting a shipment soon (hopefully the last).

Re: Restoration: 1930 Ford Model A Phaeton

On a recent test drive, the car was heating up and upon examination it was determined that the almost 87 year old radiator was not working the way it should, though the radiator was not leaking , it seemed to be clogged/blocked at many places.

So decided to cure the problem and got a brand new radiator (locally made).

Re: Restoration: 1930 Ford Model A Phaeton

Outstanding progress and work quaity. Can you kindly explain

1. the odd shaped hole in the floor board presumably giving access to the battery terminal. Is that per original or a design improvement? Will the carpet over it not cave in under the passengers heel?
2. The radiator is straight tube so I presume it could be cleaned out by rodding. My Cadillac V-16 radiator ( Honeycomb pattern but luckily with straight down tubes, was professionally cleaned out under supervision of Sahibzada Sulaiman Abbasi at Islamabad and is good as new). I think your choice of a new core is pragmatic and safe but I would not discard the original easily.

The design of the floor board is as per the original pattern , please see the pictures below

This is the one on my car

This battery terminal cover will take care of the oval opening.

I wanted to keep the old radiator as it is and we did try to get it cleaned and repaired and that is the reason that we had to replace it so late in the restoration. As per the radiator guy here, it was beyond repair and would trouble us later, and he was proved right after a few of our test drives when the car heated up abnormally.

Kartik

Amer sb. you are too kind to mention me here. In the case of this Ford, the original radiator (from pictures) seemed too far gone and I would agree with the radiator man about it being troublesome and unreliable. Replacing the core was the only way to ensure that the vehicle can travel long distances with peace of mind. In my case I had too replaced the core which has lead to the car being totally ready fo any journey.

I have to commend the wokmanship of the core. It follows the core design of the original very closely. One word of advice... you may think of placing an inline water filter. This will trap bits of scale before they end up sitting on top of the tubes preventing water to flow down the tubes freely.

The water quality is so poor in our part of India, that I am thinking of using distilled water or R.O water for radiator, specially calcium in ground water here is very high.
I will explore the possibility of an inline filter as well.

Update on work:

Work remaining now is :
1. Floorboard rubbers
2. running board rubbers and strip
3. We need to drill a hole in the windshield frame to install the wiper mechanism.
4. Some paint retouching ,rubbing and polishing
5. Pin-striping

I still have to source a rear window for the hood, and I am looking for an original set, if someone has a spare please let me know.

Hope to finish off these minor jobs in 2 or 3 days.

Sir you are making good progress. For water may I suggest to use bottled water. I use Nestle bottled water with non OAT coolant 50/50 ratio. OAT coolants attack the copper/brass/solder used in the radiator.

Congratulation Kartik on successful restoration of the Ford A. Tremendous commitment to get the car to stock . The only thing which you will need to attend to is a front bumper curvature, as noted by Karl earlier. The straight bumper could cause clearance issues in tight turns.

Ford A's are known to be very reliable cars and I am sure you will have some enjoyable drives. The 3000+ CC engine has enough torque to potter around town, without changing gears too often. Whilst your Morris is your first child, I am sure you will enjoy this car more on your drives!

Cheers

Awesome restoration, many congratulations. I saw a groove in the front Grill, is that to crank the engine using the lever ? Please post some photos of the engine bay and may be a video of how you crank the engine.

This final look of the car just took my breath away. Only reading the previous pages does one truly appreciate the pain and meticulous attention to detail you have put into this project.
