You realise what you are implying on questioning this?

BTW doesn't the New Zealand car look like an SSK?

Hope these details are of any help in proving the existence of a 680K. Nowhere related to the Indian context though.

Nice article. However we never said that 680K's did not exist. Only there is none in India. The engine number of the India car never matched up.

BTW, SAT, please PM me your email. I have a pic to send.

Cheers harit

As i had said i would upload the pics of this car when it came to my father so here are some pics which i found.
When i asked my father about this car and told him abou this forum he said that this car is not a 680K so i guess then since others are also saying it is not a 680K then.

In my next attempt I would want to share some of the very rare photographs of the legendry 680-K engine detailing of the Bi-metallic Pistons, Hollow Con-rods etc. This technonolgy was thought in the early years of the development of auto- engineering this car is a 1927 year of manufacture !

Its not clear what it is

The car is clearly a 630 K. The badge shows engine output which is not what a standard 630 gave out. This one has 100 hp non blown and 180 blown I think.

My hunch and I could be wrong, this car is a 630 K with a supercharger which develops more horsepower. Maybe the original customer asked the factory to up the power. The people who worked on the car claim the bore measures up to a 680 engine. Now whether this was done at the factory no records seem to substantiate. A lot of these cars were raced so the mods could have been done later too and a badge fixed? Don't know enough to say conlcusively.

BTW there is no such thing as a 680K from Mercedes. The 6.8 litre engine surfaced on the S which was a totally different animal with dual carbs, lowered chassis, engine set further back in the chassis etc

So are their any records of this car being raced either in india or abroad that such a mod could have been made to increase the power output ? That could help solving the mystry..

I can assure you the car was never raced in India. This was told to me by the 1st owners wife, late rajmata Bhinga, wonderful lady with a super sense of humour, the car then went to her brother the late Rajadhiraj of Shahpura in the early 50's. Shahpura was keen on motor racing, he did visit UK several times in the 30's. Drove ERA's and brm, a few hill climbs, the family still have a wonderful collection of books & 16mm b&w film from that era.

I have seen a letter from mercedes benz, Germany, which the current owner should have, written in the early 80's which clearly said that the car was manufactured in 1928.

I am sure its a Model K chassis with a S block engine, with a slightly narrower bore, 6740cc instead of the standard S engine capacity of 6789cc
single carb instead of two.

I wonder why mercedes mated a slightly toned down version (single carb & slightly narrower bore) of the S engine on a model K chassis. Perhaps this was a cheaper than the 1928 S.

A few years ago the story circulating was that Mercedes Benz did not have the records of this series, so they could not confirm the history.
harit,

this is true, in a letter from the early 80's, Mercedes Benz did mention that records were destroyed during the war. I think we have the Lancaster B 1 bombers to blame ...

I need to find the negative roll, I did take several photos, remember taking a photograph of the plate/label with engine, chassis nos etc. The small metal plate on left side near the large mounting lug of the engine. They should be easy to spot when you are looking at the left side of the engine.

It is surely a very vital piece of information on this car. Now , since the present owner is very well known by a number of members of team-bhp why doesn't someone volunteer to try and get out the information from him. If a few photographs of the plates are also provided, then that is even more better since there will be no scope of error then. This can be only done if the owner is willing to share this with us.

Why don't you talk to the owner as you live in the same general area
