Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

Yaduveer Singh Bera shared these early pictures of his grandfather Thakur Prithvi Singh of Bera.

What cars are these? He mentions 1910 Daimler and Renault.

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

Not a Maharaja car but still posting here because of its provenance.

1915 Wolseley 24/30 HP

Recently good friend Shrivardhan Kanoria had posted a sketch of his Wolseley on Facebook and on the Wolseley register page, he was contacted by the Wolseley register to use the pictures of his car in the club magazine, further interaction with the Wolseley register threw up some interesting history of this car.

How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas-img20200415wa0215.jpg

Earlier known history

In the 1980's, Late Mr. Shashi Kumar Kanoria, bought this Wolseley from an ashram in Dibrugarg, Assam. He was told that it was donated to them many years back by someone notable, however no further details were available.

The car was brought to Calcutta and restored by Shashi Kanoria. The original rims were kept aside as tyres were unavailable. Hence 20” Cadillac Rims were used, it was finished in emerald green and black and debuted in the Statesman Vintage car rally 1989, winning the Statesman Trophy.

The car was invited for the 2017 Cartier Concours d’Elegance, Hyderabad and was restored specially for the show by the present custodian Shrivardhan; It won best in class in Pre-War Classic European category and went on to win the Best of Show.

Lord March of Goodwood, made a small video of this car for Goodwood revival page, which can be found .

New Findings.

Mr. Anders Clausager and Mr. Andy Plummer, from the Wolseley register further furnished the following details from the records of the British Motor museum :-

The details are as follows:

Year of Manufacture - 1915, earlier it was believed to be a 1914 car
Model - 24/30 HP.
Coach builder - Dykes & Co., Calcutta

1st owner - The Earl of Ronaldshay, the then appointed Governor of Bengal.

From Wikipedia
Quote:
Lawrence John Lumley Dundas, 2nd Marquess of Zetland, KG, GCSI, GCIE, PC, JP, DL (11 June 1876 – 6 February 1961), styled Lord Dundas until 1892 and Earl of Ronaldshay between 1892 and 1929, was a British Conservative politician. An expert on India, he served as Secretary of State for India in the late 1930's.
This particular Wolseley, bearing chassis number 21439, was delivered to Dykes and Co. as a rolling chassis. Dykes & Co., also built carriages and built bodies for some Maharaja cars.

As per the Wolseley register, in total there were 1685 24/30 HP models built between 1910-1924, and currently only 13 are known to survive.

Info received from the register.

KL5 looks like a GWK. These were made in England and they had a primitive friction drive/ CVT.

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

Here is an image that I had saved a long time ago, supposedly Baroda. Does the car look familiar to anyone? Armstrong Siddeley perhaps? To me it seems to closest resemble an Invicta Black Prince, though that does seem too far fetched.

by 1910 Daimler had the trademark fluted radiator, the second car is not a renault, its a Clemant-Bayard.

Its likely that he owned it in England (I think the T Bird too), and that probably explains the Aston Martin Owner's Club badge on the T Bird The car survives in Indore.
