Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

A 1930s Mercedes tourer (maybe a 290?) of Udaipur, used here for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillips' 1961 visit to India. The Queen is riding ahead in the 1939 Cadillac, while the Prince is in the Mercedes, perhaps with Nehru?

I believe the Mercedes survives in a large collection, awaiting restoration.

Great find. I wonder if it is the same car that attended an event in Pune last year, registered in the same region.

It has been pointed out to me that the two cars are different - the old photo being a 90 Series, and the Pune car being a 70 Series.

I am inclined to think it is a ca 1913 Minerva Type DD, similar to the one below:

This Marmon was a Baroda car and went into the Gajjar collection.
Unfortunately that collection was subsequently disbanded.

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

Here is an interesting news article from the 'Buffalo Evening News', February 7th, 1948. It mentions that an order of 210 Motorette 3 wheelers was placed by an Indian Maharaja. I wonder who that was, and if it was fulfilled. A handful do survive in India.
