Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

Pictures of cars from the royal family of Kasmanda (Taluq) of Oudh, now UP.

Quote:
Some of the cars of the Kasmanda family. Seen parked outside the garages at the beautiful Lucknow Kasmanda House. Sadly the house was brought down to build ugly apartments.

Some stories as narrated by Shri D.P Singh

Quote:
Raja Saheb went ahead and bought a 7.7 litre Mercedes Super Straight Eight with multi gear box later that year as soon as it was launched by the company.

An interesting note.
Raja Saheb Dinesh Pratap Singh ji of Kasmanda amazed Maharaja Nabha by being the first person to drive to Nabha Palace Mussoorie also known as Airfield in a car and that too a sports car. Its on a steep road uphill and in those days road were not tarred etc as we know of them now.
Sorry for the picture quality, I have requested for better pictures, some of the cars are still with the family.

Wow, you have outdone yourself, Kartik!

The cars are a R-R Silver Ghost (which I believe is ex-Patiala, though unconfirmed), a Wolseley (dark car in middle) and a Crossley.

This page from a Dadajee Dhackjee 1930 Catalogue does list the Yuvaraj of Kasmanda (bottom of 1st row) . Thanks for a picture to go with it!

The Marquis of Cholmondeley car listed went to an "Indian Prince" (Berar ?) in 1939 ; and later to Dubash as I know it. Now back in Europe.

I had a word with the grandson of the then Maharaja and this is what he says about the R-R being ex-Patiala.

The car was bought directly from the company. He went to England and chose it and brought it back with him as he was very fond of his cars.
By any chance do you have the cover page of this catalogue ?

I should have said "Hyderabad" (possibly Moazzam Jah). The Berar (Azum Jah) SS was distinctly different.

The ex-Dubash car was part of the Bill Meredith-Owens / Stratford Motor Museum collection, along with the Nawab Wali-ud-Dowla R-R PI (71DC) and the Alwar Hispano Suiza Boulogne.

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

Here is a wonderful video of Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Patiala's first marriage from 1933. Some great cars and a bus previously discussed can be seen.

Daimler as in Daimler motor cars ? British isn't it, and I thought post 1926 or so the reference to Daimler AG of Germany was Daimler Benz or Mercedes Benz ? Could you clear up my confusion since the reference being made here is to an apparently German Daimler ?

The only thing I could think of was "Austro-Daimler".

After all, the British monarch used Daimlers right until the first "official" R-R in I believe the early fifties.

Edward VIII (as Prince of Wales) and other members of the Royal family did have R-R as personal cars since the twenties.

You can see the Nawanagar Lanchester here. From the documentary "A Little Poland in India".

It is around the 34 min marker.

Packard for sure. The Grebel lamp mounted in the centre might shed a clue on whether this car has been photographed before.
