1937 Delahaye with coachwork (unusually) by Abott.

The car is owned for the last 40 years by Robert Cory, who is friends with a friend. He informs us that the car is reputed to be owned at one point by the "Maharaja of Indore" - is this a known Holkar car?
Great car, great find Karlos! It does have some "Holkar" lines similar to his Lagondas (though, those were by Gurney Nutting).

"Automobiles of the Maharajas" mentions a Holkar Delahaye.....could this be it ?

What a magnificent motor car, looks really classy like all the Holkar cars. Thanks Karl for this find.

Thanks for clarifying KPS. I haven't seen the book hence had no clue as to their origin.

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

DKG...all those pictures are from the new book by Gautam Sen.

FYI...the Holkar Duesenberg was ordered from the factory with the sun glow orange over black paint scheme. It even had the dials of teh gauges colour keyed to the exterior in bright sun glow orange.
If you look closely you an see the different in shade around the base of teh windscreen and the belt line

How what s a pity is that there are no current pics of teh Duesenberg in this book, it would have been great to have current pics too.

If teh author had gone to California he could have got pictures of the Holkar Duesenberg, the Azam Jah Duesenberg, the Kapurthala Talbot Lago and the Kotward Isotta amongst others. These would have really added more value to the book.

Wasif bhai, i would think he would have visited these places, most of these cars have been featured in Auto India and Gautam Sen is practically running the magazine.

Iam sure he did but he could have incuded the pics and stories in teh book. I got my copy a few days ago, its a splendin book butstops short of being the definitive authority on royal and other important cars from India's past.

For example noneof the two 540K's in Indis are pictures as well as some other very prominent cars. There is also no coverage of teh Nizams collection and other major collections in India today.

For what is covered its a amazing read.

OT:
Apologies for sounding ignorant but I am going to California next week. Where exactly are these vehicles? Am going to be in the Bay Area. Would be awesome to check them out.

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

The Kapurthala Talbot is on display at the Nethercutt Museum in Sylmar close to LA

The two Duesenbergs are in the General Lyons Collection in Coto de Caza in California.

The Isotta i think is in the Murphey collection also near LA

In the bay area there are some fine collections too. There is a showroom full of the most exotic cars you can find right on one of the main streets of SF, can't remember the name but its the one that links straight to the bay bridge

I believe the Kotwara Isotta is (or at least was) with Malcom Forest in Brazil. Cheers

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

This should be the Indian Maharajas 540K coming up for auction soon. If it is ex-Holkar, it was advertised in Hemmings about 12 years ago for One Million US Dollars. In the link put up by Vagu in classics for purchase, they mention that the car left India in the late 1970's. So another car smuggled out of India?

Cheers harit

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

Here is a photo of the Delahaye which is now belonging to the Mullin Automotive Museum. Lovely car, this page was in a magazine called Robb Report India.
This car came to India as one of a pair, the other is in Jodhpur. Thereafter it travelled to a few royal eaststes, mentioned are Nawanagar, Jaipur and one or two more. Lastly the car was in shambles and was smuggled out of India.
