Karl, the reason I suggested "lamps" is as follows:

A Kolhapur Minerva with a similar peacock lamp was exhibited at the Brussels Salon in 1930.

To quote The Motor, Dec 9, 1930:
"Side lamps consisting of solid silver peacocks, on a Minerva for the Rajah of Kohlapur. The glass tails at the spread, are flood lighted from concealed bulbs".

The Maybach peacocks too seem to have perspex / glass tails.

Fact or fable, I do not know!

The following picture was taken during Tito's visit to Gwalior for a tiger hunt in 1955. Maharaja "George" and the Maharani can be seen as well. This is just one of a fleet of '47/'48 Cadillacs at Gwalior at that time.

Does BMU-4850 still exist ?

There was a Cadillac which looked like the same model (Series 75?) in Kolkata till around 10 years back. It was a regular participant in the Statesman Rally here and was silver upto the waistline and black below it. Beautiful car, which was lovingly maintained and cared for by Mr. Rahul Sircar. I think that he probably restored it too.

That was the time when I was in college and had loads of free time and would regularly tag along to Mr. Sircar's workshop, and I would spend hours admiring the cars in the place, which included a 1.5 Litre Jaguar, 2 Mercedes Benz 170S's, a Lancia Lambda and a Mark VII Jaguar. Then the super XK140 was added to the collection and underwent a complete restoration, which still looks absolutely fresh.

Of these cars, I know that the Lancia is now a part of another prominent collection and the Mark VII is in Delhi. The XK140 is of course in Kolkata but I wonder where the other cars are.

Hi,

One was a 170 V and the other was a 170S. Both were sold to Delhi. One of them was made into a two door version before it left Calcutta and was in a reputed restorer's workshop for quite a while. The car is still in Delhi if i remember. The other Mercedes went to a person who is a prominent motorcycle Restorer & collector and after that it was for sale again. The Jaguar 1.5 had a Karnataka number ( KA 9N 438) don't know where that went. You missed adding the Buick Super 8 which came from a very well known stable in Calcutta. The Caddy, both Mercs(170V & 170S), Both Jags(1.5 & mark VII), The Buick was Restored by Mr. Sanjay Ghosh.

The Jaguar Mark VII & the non modded Mercedes which went to the motor cycle collector were stripped and redone. The other cars were just looked after and then they changed hands. The Lancia and Jaguar XK 140 were completely built from scratch.

The very fact that there is some sort of brass pipe/ducting (praobably a wiring conduit) behind the peacock's legs - supports the possibility of a light inside.

I have seen some crystal curio peacocks (non-Automobile) with a similar lighting arrangement - a single bulb at the base of the vertical tail spread - which is essentially a galss slab. The light just spreads through the glass. In that sense they would be lamps.

There was also an Aston Martin with him in India, and it was yellow in colour too.
It is supposed to be under restoration since many many years. It was very similar to this.

The same car and it had gone abroad to be restored early 2000. It was temporarily painted red. Old snaps are in addition of Auto India 1986/87 edition with the corsa on the front cover.

Lovely pics. Ofcourse these cars belonged to Mayurbanj. But please do not make assumptions on two aspects.
Mayurbanj has/had a residence in Calcutta, maybe they had a garage there too. The cars need not have been pulled out in Orissa.
Vijay Mallya owns that one Rolls NOW, but from Mayurbanj that Rolls was sold to Gujrat where Mr. Mallya's mother managed to get first refusal from the owner.

Have no clue what the other polished aluminum hood Silver Ghost is!
