This piece on the smuggling of the Nabha Swan car appeared in a late 1991 issue of AA Motoring.

This picture appeared in the Indian Express in November 2000, talking loosely about Royalty being 'in vogue' again (!)

"This right hand drive example was purchased in 1938 for 5,000 Rupees by the Maharajah of Jind in Haryana, India. it was bought by Ludwig Rydel in 1970 and exported to the United States. In 1995 it was restored and became part of the current owner's collection."

Nice find! A refreshing change from what we usually see coming out of India.

What else shared the Jind stables?

Somewhere lost in the million pages here on tbhp is a picture of a pre 1915 car from Jind, I think a Fiat if I vaguely recall.

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

Interesting article on the 27 RR Phantom I Landaulette that was the property of the Maharaja of Baroda.

This 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Enclosed Drive Landaulette by Arthur Mulliner was originally delivered to the Maharajah of Baroda with its 40/50 bhp, 7,668 cc overhead-valve six-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission, solid front axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, live rear axle with cantilever leaf springs, and four-wheel servo-assisted brakes on a 150.5 inch wheelbase chassis.

The coachbuilders Arthur Mulliner, of Southampton, outfitted the elegant enclosed drive landaulette coachwork to befit a royal. The rear passenger compartment for His Majesty is utterly spectacular, with a swivel-mounted armchair and two jump seats upholstered in royal purple silk, surrounded by burled walnut, polished brass, 24-karat gold, and sterling silver—a literal throne room on wheels. The bodywork is finished in Royal Purple with the Maharajah’s heraldry—a flamboyant peacock—on the doors, there is a collapsible leather roof over the passengers for use in parades, and the bare polished aluminum hood was installed as a sporty contrast.

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

Came across this link to some two pictures of Moin ud Dowla's 1929 Phantom I Sednaca 70 OR.

Check pics 14/15/16 on this link. The car still has Moin Ud Dowla's family crest on it.

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

I found this article with a couple of pictures in a 1921 Austrian magazine.
These cars (supposedly Graham-White, which I doubt) were made for the Maharajah of Bharatpur. Anyone knows these car?

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

This car has still not been sold. Import of Vintage cars is now allowed, but sadly this car is not eligible under the scheme as it is post 1950. This was formerly a Jaipur car but never came to India. But if you find a pre 1950 car which you would like to import, VCCCI will assist you. Wonder why no car has yet come into India under this scheme, or I am not up to date.

Cheers harit

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

This is an Indian Royalty's car, which car and whose? It is clearly a Landaulette, and there is a crest on the door which I have enlarged. The palace (maybe) can be seen in the background. The studs on the stepney may give a clue.
Looking forward to some suggestions.

Cheers harit

Main reason for it no to sell is it's just too expensive! You can put 230.000 Euros into the restoration of a car, but that doesn't mean you're getting your money back. I sold mine a couple of years back for about half that money, although it didn't have an Indian connection.......

Julian description on the Daimler tourer seems to match.

Quote:
The Bharatpur 45hp Daimlers bodied by Claude Grahame-White at Hendon in 1920. This picture shows the plumbed in washbasin in the tail and the characteristic Daimler wooden slats that surround the petrol tank.
Wonder what happened to the car

Cheers
