Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

I am not sure whether this has been discussed earlier if so, please excuse

Came across this article which claims that Maharaja Rajinder singh of Patiala was the first to import a car in India and it was a De dion , " Patiala 0 "

Find the translated article here:
"But the notoriety of Rajendra emerged from the fact of being a pioneer. It caused a real shock when importing the first car to India, a De Dion Bouton -matrícula 0- Patiala , who stunned his subjects, who considered it a miracle that could travel 15 to 20 kilometers per hour without the aid of a camel , a horse or an elephant."

Two princesses Patiala aboard the De Dion Bouton

Patiala 0 as we know now is not a De dion, refer to the post below

The car in the picture is a De Dion, but the princesses (and car) belong to Cooch Behar

Here is a beauty from Sikkim. Prime Minister Nehru's visit to Sikkim

This is a rare open top

This rare open top was called Willys Jeepster. They were produced for only 3 years (1950-53)and only 19132 vehciles were made, thus making this Jeep very collectible

Here is picture of a Jeepster for sale and the description has all the details

How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas-jeepster.jpg
Note the footstep for entry to the rear seat

Quote:
The Jeepster as it became known was distinguished by quirky open styling that drew heavily on Jeep tradition. Willys-Overland lacked the ability to tool up curvaceous bodywork so for practical purposes the Jeepster relied on the sharp angles and slab sides of its stable mates but thanks to the well-judged styling gained a unique charm of its own. The Jeepster was produced for just three years with a total of 19132 finding buyers.

One of 2 Maybach's for sale of an entire Danish collection being sold, but for one car. Each car better than the other.

This Patiala Maybach existed in Delhi see pic. Left India in the 1970's, and before she left she was entered in a vintage car rally in Delhi from where this pic was taken. Once driven by a famous uncle John in a Delhi event. The car was subsequently on sale in US with a red body, some foolish people re-bodied it as pointed out by Travancore. The original body was kept and sold to the Maybach Museum in Germany, a must visit Museum if possible.

Is this a royal car? Not sure. There were about 5 Jeepsters rotting in the basement parking of Silver Arch on Nepean Sea Road, and one was opp CCI club. Someone said that some of these were replica's. Now all vanished, hopefully some of them survives somewhere.

The Maharaja of Kota for some strange reason landed up with a 1905 Star Gordon Bennett Racer in India. There are very few such racers left in the world. This car was discovered in a collection in 1970's and the car promptly left the country. Other cars found along with it are in a collection in Indore. The Star was offered for sale a few years ago in Europe. Today it is with a Mr. Layher, president of the Sinsheim and Speyer Museums in Germany, two must visit Museum covering technology, cars, bikes, planes, war machinery, trains and what not. Superb, worth visiting, I've been to both. Anyway, he commissioned Dr. Schlicht to write a book and it has been published by them. Nice book, I have put up pics of the book's cover, the car today and as found.

Surprising the Bonhams site does not mention the Patiala Maybach and now it's shifted to the Rolls Royce

Thanks! This could be Silver Ghost Chassis 2334 (Barker Saloon Limousine).

The bonnet, door handles and a few other features match.
